I think lots of factors here. DD generally only needs around 10 hours to sleep well. She also attends nursery and doesn't get home until 6pm so by the time she has had tea, wind down, and bed routine its closer to 8pm and she falls asleep between 8-9pm and wakes up 7/7.30.
This suits us - I prefer we have the time together otherwise I would never see her during the week!

But I have some friends whose 3-year-olds need to be asleep by 6.30am and they sleep until 7am!

shakeitoffsis · 14/09/2023 11:40

Between 7-7.30

PurpleMonkeys · 14/09/2023 11:44

10-13 hours I think is recommended for 3 yr old

If they're up at 7.45am, 7.45pm bed time seems a good option.

My kid at 3 didn't nap and went to bed at 7pm for stories and then asleep by 7.30/8pm but she was up at 8am

7pm for bed, usually up about 6.30

TheShinmeister · 14/09/2023 12:03

My kids were def in bed by 7 at the latest. They need the routine and parents need the evenings to themselves. I know of a two year old who is still up and about at 9.30pm and it baffles me

LabradorFiasco · 14/09/2023 12:06

Summer-born 3yo just started pre-school where they don’t allow naps; he is asleep by 7.15pm and up at 7am. Given the choice he will nap for 20 min to 1hr and will be in bed for 7.45pm, up at 7.30am the next day. He’s a much happier child with a nap plus 11.5-12h overnight. There will always be some variation at this age though, as this thread shows. [edited for typo]

Mine needs 8pm ish to 7am ish (leave for nursery at 7.30am)

I would never presume to dictate what another child or its parent(s) should do - we’re all different, children included

GCWorkNightmare · 14/09/2023 12:11

Mine went somewhere between 10:30 and 11:30 but didn’t have to be up before 10am.

We’re a family of owls. None of us wanted or needed to be up at 7am so why would we want DD in bed early (even if she could fall asleep before 10pm)?

Amazingly, not everybody is the same and your judgement is unreasonable.

SnapdragonToadflax · 14/09/2023 12:15

Mine has only ever needed 11 hours, so around 8pm/8.30pm and he usually wakes up around 7.15am. If he's very tired he might sleep later, but it's impossible to get him to sleep any earlier unless he's ill.

I would like more evening but I would be spending it trying to get my child to sleep, whereas getting him into bed around 8pm means he falls asleep after a book and a couple of songs.

This kid is still playing outside at 10pm some nights. That’s not right for one so young

TropicalTrama · 14/09/2023 12:55

Most 3YOs that aren’t napping will do 11-12 hours overnight so if you want her up at 7.45am latest, you’re probably looking at a bedtime of 7.30-8pm but may need to adjust slightly based on individual sleep times.

Mine is 2 and a half and no longer napping and goes to bed at 7. That’s because I want the kids up between 6.30 and 7am based on the time we need to get everyone breakfasted and ready and get to school on time (youngest is at school nursery).

That’s your opinion. Mine managed 11-12 hours overnight, just later than many others. It’s not “not right” just because it’s not what you would do.

MrsSamR · 14/09/2023 15:13

My 3 y/o and almost 1 y/o are both in bed and asleep by 7pm but are early risers and wake around 6am. This works for us though as we need to be out early for pre-school/work etc.

Caspianberg · 14/09/2023 15:22

Mine sleeps max 10hrs. So bedtime around 9pm and he wakes around 6.30am.

I would like an evening and a lie in but he doesn’t sleep early and wakes early so loose out both ways.

He had a routine since tiny, but after two books he still refuses to sleep in own bed

Dragonfly909 · 14/09/2023 21:37

Mine does still nap sometimes, but no matter what we do her nights are pretty short, say 10pm to 7am at best. She never slept much even as a baby. My 4 month old currently thinks nighttime is 7pm to 7am (wakes up loads but stays in night mode) so hoping for better this time!

Bumblebee112 · 14/09/2023 21:50

Almost 3 year old here. Asleep 7/7.30pm and wakes 5.30am pretty much daily. Works fine for us as we have to be out the house at about 7am.
Hasn’t napped since he was about 20 months.

Taylorswiftserastour · 14/09/2023 22:06

Usually asleep between 7.30-7.45pm, wakes 6.30-6.45am. Anything after 7am would be a sleep in but only ever happens on my working days when I've forgotten to set my alarm 😬

Inthesky42 · 14/09/2023 22:17

Mine is up for 6am every morning so I have to put him to bed at 7pm or he's too tired. I've tried shifting bedtime back but it doesn't win me any lie in in the morning! He's just an early bird!

DiaryOfaTTCer · 14/09/2023 22:32

My little boy has just turned 3 and we are usually up the stairs at 7:30, bath, into his room at 8ish and then half an hour of stories.

Unfortunately we then have to lie next to him until he goes to sleep and that can take anywhere from 10 mins to an hour and a half :(

He also walks into our room every night and gets into bed with us until morning. The only positive to this is that if it's the weekend and he's got in with us, he sleeps in until 9am which is bliss!

He's always been a bad sleeper tho. Never been able to go asleep by himself.

gogomoto · 14/09/2023 22:43

8ish when mine were that age, same getting up time.

6.30pm

Really ? How many 4 year olds will sleep from 6:30-7:45 that is more than 13 hours. A 6:30 bedtime for my children would have resulted in them waking just after 5.....

Caspianberg · 15/09/2023 06:09

@Goldencup - what time do yours sleep for 7.45am wake up? Ds is usually 9pm, often 10pm and he’s still wide awake by 6/6.30am. Never ever has he slept until 7.45am, even on days like new year eve or late flights he can go at midnight and still be up at 6am

The OP referenced a 3 year old and mine went to bed at 6.30pm and wake 12/13 hrs later.
