We’re looking for some new books to read at bedtime.

I loved the Worst Witch because they had depth and character development so I’m looking for something similar.

We’ve just finished the Magic Treehouse books. Goodness they were bland. So formulaic and flat.

Oh and DC’s definition of a good book is ‘when the characters get into scrapes’.

We’re reading Isadora Moon at the moment (to my seven year old but started when she was six!) and enjoying them.

Grump goes gallumping.
Stop that bus.
Jeremy James - the elephant on daddy's car.
There are many Oxford Reading Tree books to suit a range of tastes. And many other Enid Blyton books...

Gobbolino the Witch's Cat
Varjak Paw
Carbonel
The Witch's Tears
Measle and the Wrathmonk series

TodayForTomorrow · 04/09/2023 20:25

My six year old quite likes Famous Five (Dick and Fanny goes over his head 😄) and we're currently reading How To Train Your Dragon.

We enjoyed Worst Witch too- need to read some more of those with Halloween approaching!

Rysimo · 04/09/2023 20:25

Dodi Smith, 101 Dalmatians.

Blessedwithboys · 04/09/2023 20:25

Enid Blyton the faraway tree collection.

Ballgateblazer · 04/09/2023 20:27

Flat Stanley and esio trot (infact a few of Roald Dahls shorter books were good).
Dc loved captain underpants.
Shorter chapter books were what we started with. Then daisy and ghe trouble book series.

Another vote for the Magic Faraway Tree! Especially the big picture book versions

We’re reading Isadora Moon at the moment (to my seven year old but started when she was six!) and enjoying them.

This has come up from a friend too but are they any good?

We got one from the library by the same author (Mirabel something maybe, half witch, half fairy) and I didn’t like it at all.

It was all ‘put your bike away, be nice to your brother, tell the truth’ messages. I wanted exciting escapism, not thinly veiled good behaviour reminders.

Is Isadora Moon the same?

Roald Dahl - though some better for younger ages than others and almost all have something that I have to change because it is Not OK and makes me wince
We're currently enjoying Alice in Wonderland though I think it's quite over his head
DS absolutely loves the Famous Five and the Secret Seven, which I also loved as a child but which I now find tedious and again with odd Not OK bits

Rainallnight · 04/09/2023 20:32

@Colourfulponderings Isadora Moon is better, definitely, but there are behaviour messages. Which I’m fine with! 😂

Tisfortired · 04/09/2023 20:35

DS1 is 9 now but around that age I remember him belly laughing at the Flat Stanley series. We also read all of the Roald Dahls, some (The Witches in particular) he struggled to keep up with but George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach and Danny Champion of the World were his favourites.

He also enjoyed the Dog Man books, and David Walliams.

AtalantaX · 04/09/2023 20:47

Mrs Pepperpot? I’m reading Faraway Tree series with six and four year olds at the minute, the six year old eagerly asks for it every night.
Mr Majeika series is very good.

RampantIvy · 04/09/2023 20:49

Yet another vote for The Faraway Tree. DD loved it so much I think I must hae read the stories at least three times.

Colourfulponderings · 04/09/2023 20:50

Having read these I’m wondering if The Magic Treehouse recommendation I got was actually The Faraway Tree and I’ve misremembered it!

My 6 year old has really enjoyed the my naughty little sister series and the ones by bell Mooney 'I don't want to' 'it's not fair' etc etc about kitty.

eurochick · 04/09/2023 20:52

I was going to suggest The Faraway Tree as soon as I saw the title.

DelurkingAJ · 04/09/2023 20:53

More modern things we’ve enjoyed have included:
Toto the Ninja Cat
The Dragon in the Library
The Boy Who Grew Dragons

And old favourites:
Professor Branestawm
Enid Blyton (currently deep in The Secret Island series)
Little House in the Big Woods
The Borrowers

Fudgeandcaramel · 04/09/2023 20:56

The twits. Gobbolino. The sheep pig. Paddington and Paddington abroad.

DuranNotSpandeau · 04/09/2023 21:00

Dog Diaries series is really funny and has cartoon illustrations too. We loved the way it's 'written' by the dog so names for things and people are funny.

Horrible Histories? More like pages you can dip in and out of, and read out the easier/funny sections, leaving more complicated/gruesome bits until they are older?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/09/2023 21:03

I was going to say The Magic Faraway Tree too. My dd loved it.

She’s 17 now. Was just talking about it the other day.

misssunshine4040 · 04/09/2023 21:03

My 5 year old absolutely love the faraway tree and enchanted wood series.
I loved reading them to him as they were my childhood favourites and so lovely to revisit.

He quite liked the David Walliams Demon Dentist and The Midnight Gang

Colourfulponderings · 04/09/2023 21:05

Wow, so many comments for The Faraway Tree, I think that’ll be next but this is also a fabulous list to work through.

I like the dragon based recommendations too.
