We’re looking for some new books to read at bedtime.

I loved the Worst Witch because they had depth and character development so I’m looking for something similar.

We’ve just finished the Magic Treehouse books. Goodness they were bland. So formulaic and flat.

The Secret Seven has been a huge hit, so much DS is now obsessed with his own largely imaginary "secret club" and we're currently loving The Animals of Farthing Wood. The Rory Branagan series is great too.

Georgiepud · 04/09/2023 22:08

Some of the shorter Michael Morpugo books were popular here at that age. Mainly the ones about animals.

Not exactly a chapter book, but I can recommend the short stories books by Terry Pratchett, so "The Witches Vacuum Cleaner and Other Stories", and "The Dragons of Crumbling Castle etc", and they're enjoyed by whichever grownup is reading.

"The Secret Explorers" series is quite good, where it's a group of children from around the world who each have niche knowledge (dinosaurs, botany, volcanoes, ancient history etc) and they are sent to a particular place to avert a coming disaster using their knowledge and skills.

I've been trialling the hobbit recently, but he's not got the attention span for it yet.

Lots of people here recommended Anna Hibiscus books to us a few years ago, which my little girl really really enjoyed

bluesky45 · 04/09/2023 22:17

The enchanted wood/faraway tree series for us too! My almost 6 year old loved it and now my 4 year old is obsessed, listens to it all the time on audiobook even when we aren't reading it.
Another recommendation is jack's secret summer and jack's secret world. An actually interesting book to read even as an adult, a bit of a mystery, keeps you guessing right to near the end.

ohknow · 04/09/2023 22:19

We just read 'the bee who did a wee' got it on Amazon and it's been a fun read, my little one has enjoyed it

LancashireSquirrel · 04/09/2023 22:19

My DD loved Amelia Fang at that age. She also loved Isadora Moon (and the spin off Mirabelle books).

She likes the Rainbow Grey series now.

Gillstuck · 04/09/2023 22:20

The Wishing Chair - Enid Bylton.

The Ickabog - JK Rowling

Spinningaround18 · 04/09/2023 22:39

The Daisy series are great, I was far too invested every evening! We're also reading a few of the younger Jacqueline Wilson ones (e.g. Double Act, The Worst Thing About My Sister)

PickAPark · 04/09/2023 22:41

Oh my, kids would like these. Thanks

The Ramona Books by Beverly Cleary.
Sweet, funny stories of Ramona growing up with her big sister, cat, family, friends and her various thoughts, fears, adventures as she goes through life. They start when she is 4, and go on until she is 12. They are fairly timeless. I discovered them when I lived in the US when I was 9, and loved them. DD loved them when I read them to her when she was 6-7. I have no idea why they have never been more popular in the UK. They are American, but fairly timeless and placeless with the exception of a bit of vocabulary. I've only ever seen them sold new in sets in the UK, but World of Books usually has individual ones second hand.

The Sophie Books - Dick King Smith
Similar to Ramona, but slightly younger, slimmer volumes and set in the UK.

Both series have female protagonists, but also strong male supporting characters.

The Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf books (there are 4)
The Ramona series by Beverly Cleary - lovely. Also Socks and The Mouse and the Motorcycle by the same author
The Trumpet of the Swan (E.B. White)
Mrs Pepperpot stories
The Moomins books, beautifully written
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Museum Kittens books by Holly Webb are fun. My dd discovered them aged 7 but they would be fine for a 6yo. Lots of getting into scrapes in those!
Paddington and Olga da Polga (Michael Bond)

ShoesoftheWorld · 05/09/2023 07:21

Oh, snap re Ramona - didn't see the post above :)

Swearwolf · 05/09/2023 07:36

Definitely Ramona!

But we also loved the How to Train Your Dragon series, they're fantastic.

DS is 5 but we've been enjoying the series that includes The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. We've just finished the Cat Who Wanted to Go Home... I think there's 5 or 6

Colourfulponderings · 10/09/2023 21:09

We’ve read one of these actually and I quite enjoyed it. (Note the theme of this thread is books that I’ll enjoy, not DD 😂)

I’m also intrigued by your username…
