School Allocation

So, I reapplied to for school applications last minute as we are having to move.

They have allocated a place 28 miles from our home and 24 miles from our new home. There are plenty of undersubscribed schools in the large town.

Not even a week to term starting what do I do? I can't get her there, I don't drive!

Have you completed in year transfer form and sent it to each school individually?

BoohooWoohoo · 30/08/2023 18:37

Are you on waiting lists of all the closer schools ?

Hellocatshome · 30/08/2023 18:39

28 miles?! If the other schools are actually undersubscribed in your child's year you can just do an in year transfer to one of those.

Do you live in the large town? If so, phone the undersubscribed schools directly on the first day back. When we moved, the school did all the application stuff for us and just informed the LA that the children were registered.

LG123 · 30/08/2023 18:40

I am on the waiting list yes, but there are plenty of schools with places in my LARGE town.

Do they have spaces in the right school year?

LG123 · 30/08/2023 18:43

Yes they have spaces within the same town, maybe not my chosen 3 but within the town yes.

So if they have space in the correct year you just ask to do an in year transfer to one of them you dont have to be on a waiting list.

LG123 · 30/08/2023 18:46

@Hellocatshome do I do that from Friday? And just accept the place at the school I can't get to?

VariationsonaTheme · 30/08/2023 18:48

If the local authority have allocated that place (rather than you choosing it) then they need to fund transport. However I’m not sure why they haven’t allocated you a place at the closest school with places which seems to be what you’re saying has happened?

I dont know all the ins and outs are they going into Reception? I just know if you want to move your child to another school in year you just find a school you want with space and do an in year transfer. My friend moved her child and it was only a matter of a few days between deciding to do it and the child starting at the new school.

Someone more experienced will probably be along to tell you what to do with the place you have been offered. Do you have ancontact number for the admissions team? Maybe call them and explain that you know there is a place at x school and how should you go about it.

Which year?

LG123 · 30/08/2023 19:11

If there is a space at one of the others closer they have to allocate it to you if you apply.

LG123 · 30/08/2023 19:32

I applied for my top 3 and they allocated one 28 miles away so clearly they don't!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 30/08/2023 19:35

Phone all the schools on Monday and go on the waiting list. If they have a space ask to take it. Speak to your LA - 28 miles is ridiculous

Hellocatshome · 30/08/2023 19:37

LG123 · 30/08/2023 19:32

But you said your top 3 were full. That means your child will have been judged to be lower down the criteria than the other children. They cant give you a place once all the places are taken. This is why its important that you make your last choice a school that you might not want but would certainly want over a school 28 miles away and have a very good chance of getting in.

Hellocatshome · 30/08/2023 19:38

You can remain on the waiting list of your top 3 whilst taking an empty space at a closer school.

LIZS · 30/08/2023 19:39

Have you moved yet? They might be undersubscribed overall but not for Reception. Some schools will have admin staff in later this week, others next.

PanelChair · 30/08/2023 19:45

You need to speak to the LEA admissions team tomorrow to get some clarity here.

If you are looking for a reception place, it is likely that schools are full for that year group. Infant class sizes are limited by law to 30, so the LEA can’t give you a place in your preferred school if it would mean your child is the 31st child. The LEA should then offer you a place at the nearest school that has a space. You say some local schools are undersubscribed. If that means they have spaces for reception, you should be offered a place there rather than at a school more than 20 miles away.

This all sounds off. Have you moved house yet? Have you provided evidence of your new address?

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 30/08/2023 19:47

When does she turn five? You may be able to defer entry to allocated school until then and hopefully sort out a nearer place.

LG123 · 31/08/2023 10:48

She is 5, she is delayed entry to reception.

OP posts:
LG123 · 31/08/2023 10:50

lavenderlou · 31/08/2023 10:53

I think you need to consult with someone at the LA by phone. Have they told you there are definitely Reception places in the schools in town? It seems strange that they would allocate one further away if so. Could there be some confusion if she is already 5 about which year group they are putting her in?

Often in Reception there are children that don't turn up at the start of term so you should hopefully get a more convenient place soon.

PatriciaHolm · 31/08/2023 10:59

LG123 · 31/08/2023 10:50

Are you sure there is a space in the year you want? Not just spaces in the school overall.

And you are sure they have your correct address?

This sounds very odd but may have something to do with the fact she is delayed a year. For that to happen the admission authority for the school need to agree, so I suppose it's remotely possible the nearer schools with places in the year you want have said no to her going into reception rather than year one. It does sound very unlikely though.

It does sound as if you need to talk to someone as what they have done is ridiculous; if there were genuinely no spaces within 25+ miles, the FAP would be invoked as that's clearly a ludicrous distance.
