18mo doesn’t ‘dance’

So this seems weird! He’s very active walks climbs (runs mainly haha!)

but I notice he doesn’t seem to dance. It’s only me him and his dad at home and I do little boogies when music is on and his dad doesn’t dance much but would bop with it on

Is this normal? We have a friend who has a baby 1 month younger and they dance to music like Bob up and down etc but their older siblings dance a lot the twins are in dance school so is it influence that helped there a bit?

Or do some babies not really Bob/dance

Plenty don't. It's really not a milestone.

Unmeee · 26/07/2023 20:45

@AlligatorPsychopath thanks sorry I just wondered he’s my first child and I wondered have I not taught him and is that why etc

His father doesn't dance so it's part of your child's make up.

His father bops because he's learnt it is the socially acceptable thing to do. So it means your son will very likely do the same.

swanling · 26/07/2023 20:53

What does bopping entail?

Overthebow · 26/07/2023 20:54

Maybe he just doesn’t like music! I don’t think it’s an issue or something to worry about.

swanling · 26/07/2023 20:56

Sorry, genuinely curious about the distinction between boogie and bop, was trying to picture the scene in your home. 😁

Do either of you boogie/bop with him?

linziere · 26/07/2023 20:58

My 22 month DD isn't really a bobber but a couple of months ago started trotting round the room when she likes a song so that's her version of dancing.

Unmeee · 26/07/2023 21:03

Sorry so when I say I boogie I dance! Like my whole body and he’ll laugh at this (maybe I’m awful😂😂) I meant bob* for his dad like he’s not a dancer except when drunk which obvisouly our son has never seen haha!

so I do dance and get him to he smiles and laughs but if I put a song on he wouldn’t just dance or walk around dancing

maybe he will later on :) I’m silly for worrying inknow. I worry over every little thing haha

Mine is 21 months and I would say has just really started dancing the last few weeks. Previously would just stand and look at my husband & me dancing at her .

WeightoftheWorld · 26/07/2023 21:16

They're all different. DC1 didn't really dance til about 2.5. DC2 was dancing sitting down as soon as they could sit unsupported at 6 months!

Toottooot · 26/07/2023 21:23

Mine never danced til they were 3. Didn’t realise I should have been concerned.

gymbummy · 26/07/2023 21:30

I'm 44, I don't dance or 'bob' to music. I feel I may be a lost cause

HappiDaze · 26/07/2023 21:33

They dance naturally when they want to because they like the track that's playing

Being forced to dance along to what someone else likes and you don't is the worst most cringe feeling ever. If you carry on he'll probably hate dancing for life

sofapaddling · 26/07/2023 21:35

My 18 month doesn't dance either. Has never done the head bopping or bum shaking I've seen other babies do to music. Occasionally she will do a shake to baby shark but yeah, just not into dancing at the min. Funnily enough, her dad is not into dancing either. Maybe they've inherited that gene 😅

ClinkyWotsit · 26/07/2023 21:46

DD pretty much skipped any bopping or boogying (?) phase and has moved straight onto the medium of interpretive dance. I don’t know what they’re doing at nursery but she likes to stare meaningfully into the distance and waft her arms around as though she’s auditioning for the worlds most terrible (sorry DD) ballet.

larti · 26/07/2023 22:13

DC2 started dancing pretty early - swaying to any music from about 6m. All the mums at our baby group found it amusing and said theyd never seen it so young. DC1 was probably later, but also would spontaneously dance and press buttons on her toys to play music so she could dance along. It's always felt pretty natural and intuitive for both of them.

I'm a pretty good dancer and "feel" rhythm pretty well. DH is too self-conscious to dance and always seems a bit stiff and as if he's just socially obliging.

Mrsmch123 · 26/07/2023 22:19

Mine has just turned 2 and he has just started dancing m. Prior to that he would just look at us and smile/laugh. He now joins in with the cutest little wiggles and side steps🥰

Ringringringringringringringbananaphone · 26/07/2023 22:21

DD didn’t bop or dance until she was about 2.5. Seemingly overnight, she discovered the groove and hasn’t stopped since (she’s now 5). I wouldn’t worry :)

crackersforcheese · 26/07/2023 22:22

Mine is nearly 3 and has just started dancing, or ordering us to dance 🤣

Roollie · 26/07/2023 22:29

Mine was interested in dancing until 2.5 ish even then it's a rarity.

JoeyRamoney · 27/07/2023 11:05

DD never danced as a baby/small toddler and I think I was expecting it after seeing loads of videos on babies dancing! She started bopping about closer to 2.5

Singleandproud · 27/07/2023 11:11

Obvious one but is his hearing OK?

Other than that some people dance some don't.

My DD loved watching River dance on TV at that age and would spin, stamp about and kick her legs up copying them.

Body coordination and knowing how to move your body in space became important later on in learning sports skills etc but at 18 months I wouldnt be worrying.

Crunchingleaf · 27/07/2023 12:42

DC1 never danced. DC2 has been dancing ages and is 20 months. DC1 still isn’t into music. DC2 really loves music. Dancing comes from within not everyone has it.

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE · 27/07/2023 12:44

I am 53 and have never danced, the modern style of dancing of just jigging around waving arms about is soo cringeworthy and embarrassing and I would be useless at it🙄
