How many 3-6 baby outfits do I need?!

Hi wise Mumsnetters

I seem to have ended up with what appears to be an excessive number of 3-6 outfits for baby through gifts and my own vinted purchases.
I was wondering if anyone could advise how many is reasonable to need before I give some away or resell (not including sleepsuits?)
people have warned me I may need more than I think due to reflux etc. Hoping to do a max of 2 washes per week.

thanks in advance!

About 400 IIRC 🫣

I think it’s hard to tell tbh.

Spottypineapple · 26/07/2023 14:35

So hard to tell - I'd wait until the baby is In a bigger size and then sell/regift what you haven't used or what's in good condition

Cluelessfirstimer · 26/07/2023 14:35

Hard to tell. My advice is wait until baby out grows them. We had soooo many at that age. Too many! But we went through a lot...

DS started crawling so was always mucky somehow. A poo explosion, sick up, food when weaning started... honestly some days 4 plus outfits!

I would shove some in a bag ready to give away/sell but hold off until the size no longer fits.

Oh good, thanks for your advice guys, very reassuring! I’m not sure how many I have but I’d say definitely more than 10, possibly in the region of 15?! Which I thought was a crackers amount but maybe they will end up getting used…

I'd say more than 50 is probably excessive.

15 isn't crackers

ReadRum · 26/07/2023 14:43

14 plus two for the changing bag.

SparkyBlue · 26/07/2023 14:44

That's definitely not a crazy amount of clothes at all. Don't get rid of anything yet

pinkfrog55 · 26/07/2023 14:45

On rechecking it’s possibly closer to 20 in the 3-6 size (not including sleepsuits) but thank you all for your reassurance. Would be a shame for them not to get worn!
Thanks all 🙏🏻

In case there may be a sibling one day, don’t worry at all. First baby ruined a few things so everything got used for second baby.

Nell80 · 26/07/2023 15:02

Two washes a week?! How?? Lmao I'm so jealous. I do two loads a day between two kids.
About your question though - I wouldn't count them I'd just stop buying and see how I got on for a month. If selling on vinted you'll probably want to wait a year so you're selling clothes in the right season anyways.

TropicalTrama · 26/07/2023 15:03

15 is about right. I reckon we got through 3 a day- one would get sicked on, then change after bath for bed. You also want 2 spares to live in the changing bag. I wouldn’t want to be doing washing every other day either. Then brands vary in sizing, especially second hand stuff that may have shrunk, so even with an average sized baby you’ll find some stuff may fit between 2 and 4 months, others will be perfect for more like 4-8 months. So actually it’s not all the same size, if that makes sense.

RosieRainbow1986 · 26/07/2023 15:08

I seem to have loads!!! Mainly because the 3-6 months is going across two seasons - summer and autumn! So we have shorts, t-shirts and rompers/dungarees - casual and smart! And then warmer clothes, also casual and smart!! Seems like loads but seem to be using the majority of it so far!!

Mutabiliss · 26/07/2023 15:12

Too many is better than too few, then you don't have to do so much washing.

You should probably clarify what you mean by outfits because most babies will still be mostly wearing sleepsuits at that age.

It really depends how quickly your own child grows, I had a big fast growing baby who flew through this clothing size but other babies could be there for 6 months.

pinkfrog55 · 26/07/2023 15:32

@shivawn I thought I had clarified that I mean outfits for daytime and not sleepsuits. That’s why I said not including sleepsuits 😂 appreciate lots of little ones wear sleepsuits round the clock at this age but I think we will use outfits in the day and sleepsuits at night

calorcalorcalor · 26/07/2023 16:27

I think you'll be fine and they will get used, I had about the same and they all got worn and I didn't need to do so much washing!

climbershell · 26/07/2023 16:42

Shouldn't need more than 10. I'd say 7 is plenty. You'll likely get at least 2 days out of a vest and often 2 days trousers and tops before weaning. Often there'll be in same clothes all day, unless you put on a nappy badly. Obv get some poo leaks but not that often and don't need to change from just a little spit up / sick, just dab it.

I did washing once a week for first baby and now with a 3 month old and 19 month old do our load for them a week and one load for me & partner. First few weeks did 2 loads a week as baby was incredibly refluxy until we got medication

I got sooo many hand me downs, but half of them we never used. You have your fav 4 or 5 that get worn the most

Nell80 · 26/07/2023 16:51

I'm absolutely staggered by the idea that some people can do two loads a week! Haha I know I'm missing the point but how do you do it? Baby soaks through at least 3 changes of clothes daily, and I mean soaked through, not dab-able. Plus all the muslins and bibs...do you leave the vomit smelling clothes separately to your own clothes?

TeddyBeans · 26/07/2023 16:54

Well I've just bagged up my daughter's 3-6 month stuff and I've ended up with 55 items of clothing. Including 14 babygrows, 12 short sleeve vests and 5 sleeveless vests. The rest is a variety of outfits, dresses and cardigans/coats. It's too much. She wore a couple of bits maybe once or twice. I've split it into two bundles to sell because noone needs that much stuff for 3 months!

For some reason people went nuts buying us 3-6 month stuff instead of smaller sizes when she was born. When I had my son we had an influx of 0-3 month stuff instead

Sugarfree23 · 26/07/2023 16:57

I'd probably say 14 max, and should you run out you can use a sleep suit.

However if anything has been gifted from the big chains M&S, Next they will give you a gift card so you can buy something else later.

Mutabiliss · 26/07/2023 16:57

I'm also baffled by two loads a week, but I had a refluxy baby so assumed life was different for those who weren't cleaning up milk after every bottle 😂 And I definitely dabbed rather than changed when I could... but the muslins alone, I'd get through a few a day. We rarely had poosplosions by then, but on a bad reflux day we'd easily get through five vests in a day.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/07/2023 17:01

Age will matter a lot here... mine were on the smaller size so initial weaning was in the 3-6 size. We went through a lot of vests (definitely didn't last two days!) Plus teething drool even with bibs...

You have these items now. You might as well keep them...

Icedlatteplease · 26/07/2023 17:03

My second child lived in sleepsuits at 3-6 months. I had way more than 15

Caspianberg · 26/07/2023 17:10

Not that many. Probably had 7-8 sleepsuits, and 5-6 outfits ie leggings/ vest. A few cardigans

Ds would have been in 3-6 by 2 months. He never had leaking nappy, never drooled either. Was not eating solid food either at that size. Max one day and one night change at that age, and I often used the night sleepsuit more than one night.

we probably only did 2 clothes washes a week also. As we would do one every day roughly and that included reusable nappy wash every other day, and bedding/ towel wash

OttilieKnackered · 26/07/2023 17:11

Definitely wait and see. My son is 3 months old and is just moving in to 6-9 month size, so def not being weaned in 3-6 months.

We also generally do vest and leggings/trousers or soft dungarees in the day and sleepsuits at night. For us it’s easier to whip off trousers for nappy changes than unpopper and fold up a sleepsuit. Also helps him differentiate night and day a bit.
