Am I being a food snob?

Hi,

DD is starting school in September and I have been sent the menus to chose her first months worth of lunches.

There are two jacket potato options, a meat dish and a veggie dish. There seems to be the same 6-7 meals: burger & potato cubes, pizza & potato cubes, lasagna, fish and chips, tomato pasta & garlic bread etc. Desserts are a cookie, ice-cream, yoghurt, chocolate mouse...

The veggie options sometimes include some veg but I was expecting more fruit and veg in general, some days there is no fruit or veg at all and mainly carbs? I expected some peas on the side or an apple for example?

I always planned for her to have a hot meal at lunch as mum friends have always said how expensive and a faff packed lunches are and most of it can left anyway where as at least she'll probably eat all of the hot meal?

Am I being a terrible snob? 😳

Obviously its only one meal a day so its not going to do her any harm but the food at her nursery is so different it just came as a surprise?

I hate the grey colour broccoli takes on after being under a heat lamp 🤢.

It's interesting how many people accept and defend the school lunches offered. Why are we settling for such low quality mains for our children? It doesn't matter if fruit/salad is also available when the main is crap. 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t want her eating unhealthy processed crap for one meal every day! I’d send packed lunches. I had no idea school meals were so bland and unhealthy - I thought they were supposed to have improved a lot!

Not a snob, food sounds terrible

Perhaps if you took time to research how much schools actually have to make the food, you would be less whiney. It’s pennies

I would rather pay more for a lunch than have DS eat rubbish everyday. Ours are reasonable kid food so fish cakes, Shepards pie, spaghetti Bol, wraps, Mac and cheese etc. Friday is always fish and chips as it's a catholic school. They only get beige food (pizza) once every 4 weeks

They introduced a great menu at my dc primary (few years ago) and switched back to pizza and other beige options because the kids weren’t eating the food. Parents complained it was weird (Thai green curry but very mild, chilli, lasagna filled with veg, vegetable hotpot). Things my dc see as normal. There’s no point having “great” food if it’s not being eaten.
