Am I allowing my family to look after my baby too much

I am very fortunate I have my mum and dad and my in-laws all living within 5 minutes of my house. My baby is 7 months old and I work 3 days a week. On those days my parents or my in-laws will look after her of course. However on my days off if I need to get an errand done such as nails or post office or cleaning the house I will sometimes drop her off for an hour or so so I can do these things. Not every single errand but some of them. The other day my friend told me this was abit much and I was relying on my family too much. Am I?

As long as everyone is happy I'd continue as you are op.
It may be that your friend is envious of the help you get. If she doesn't have that support network that is understandable but you can't live your life to make her feel better about hers.

We are very fortunate too, with all the grandparents close by. My sons are now 8 and 10 so more independent. I have said to my husband, when our sons are older and if they have children and live close by, we are definitely going to help out as much as possible as I am so so grateful and appreciative of all they help we’ve had.

Your friend just sounds jealous, if your family and baby are happy with the arrangement then ignore her. My parents live across the road from me and will always happily take the children if I’m working or need to get things done. It’s nice to see a story about someone that’s got great support around them.

Mariposa26 · 16/07/2023 22:41

Sounds great! Why shouldn’t you rely on family? It takes a village. It’s lovely that your baby will have a close relationship with family, I wish I had your set up (and sounds like your friend does too!)

kiwivick87 · 16/07/2023 22:49

I think your arrangement sounds wonderful. It’s great that the baby is settled with other people and yo can get an hour here and there to yourself.

Your DD is very lucky. She will grow up with a fantastic relationship with both sets of grandparents AND have a unstressed mummy!

Yanbu and it is none of your friends business.

We had a similar set up. I went back to work 2 days per week and it gradually increased.

My parents and in laws had my daughter on the days I was in work, and were happy to have an active part in her growing up.

My mother in law also had my nephew who is 18 months older, so was looking after 2, but it means they grew up with a great relationship.

On some days when I wasn't working my mother in law and I would do things together with the two children anyway.

Childcare isn't needed now due to age and us working from home a lot, but my daughter still sees grandparents from both sides regularly.

They are the first people she had sleepovers with, which was very exciting for her and meant she had spent a night away from us as a fun activity too.

If they are happy, you are happy, and baby is happy, stuff what other people think! They are probably a bit envious of your great support network.

Whattodo112222 · 17/07/2023 08:46

Your friend just sounds jealous. You recognise how hugely fortunate you are and grandparents are happy.. so just crack on.

crumpet · 17/07/2023 08:48

Have you asked your family if they are happy doing this? And explained that of course you’d stop if they are finding it a bit too much? If they are happy to do it, then carry on.

MenopauseSucks · 17/07/2023 08:52

It sounds a really good set up for all of you & yes, I agree with other PPs that your friend is jealous.
However are you an only child?
Is your child the only grandchild they'll have?
If other grandchildren arrive they might not be able to look after them thus causing sibling resentment...

CurlewKate · 17/07/2023 08:55

Is everyone who matters, including you, happy? Then it's absolutely fine. Babies can't have too many people around to love them.

magratvonlipwig · 19/07/2023 10:05

Sounds like a perfect arrangement, everyone gets to share the love
