I've already given her some actually but then worried myself. She only had a couple of sips and is now just playing with the breaker, I've diluted it now as didn't realise I had too!

She has been having really hard balls of poo for about a week now so was hoping it would help get things softened up in there

I always found the prune purées brilliant at getting things moving. Definitely worth trying that rather than apple juice

Sorry should've mentioned I have been using the prunes but no luck so far, they usually work hence trying the juice. I really only want her to have water but I'm just a bit desperate. She doesn't seem bothered by it but it's been going on a while and she must be very backed up

Oh, how strange. You could also try some mashed banana, that sometimes worked. But prunes always seemed like magic. Water did help occasionally.

How long has it been?

You could just try a warm bath, tummy massage and bicycle legs.
I suppose you could look at what she's eaten recently and work out if it's anything there that's caused it

I always made apple and pear sauce for dc and sometimes would stir in the pureed prunes.

Dice 1 apple and 1 Pear squeeze of lemon juice if you have any, couple tablespoons of water and slowly simmer on the stove until its a mash. Give to baby while still warm. Will keep in the fridge for a couple of days.

Also good to give when teething as a food of they are on a hunger strike.

Wouldn't have banana that is on the binding list along with eggs that you should limit....given by hospital....stewed apple or pears are better.

Anoushkaka · 10/07/2023 16:32

Definately not bananas, they are known to cause constipation. Blueberries or some diluted probe juice.

kernowpicklepie · 10/07/2023 16:37

I didn't mean bananas, I meant blueberries but I was typing quickly and not paying full attention to what fruit I had typed.

soakinboakin · 10/07/2023 16:40

Thank you everyone. I do have some pears in the fridge, how do you know if they're still good ?? They look okay

The Pears will be fine. If it's rotten you'll know. Even bruised is fine to use.

This happened to my daughter once we started weaning. I tried everything and nothing made a difference. In the end the GP prescribed laxido and she had one sachet twice a day for about 3 years.

The other thing that we had to resort too was glycerin suppositories.

Hopefully the fruit/increase fluids will work for your little one, but just offering another option just in case

With some people banana does the opposite. One time I ate two VERY ripe bananas and spent the entire evening sitting on the toilet. Couldn't leave it for more than5 minites before I was back again. If you google apparently there is something in them that causes your intestines to start moving - peaches have the same nutrient, but I haven't noticed the same effect.

Op, some ther things that may work:

  • pear and live yogurt
  • kiwis (riper the better)
  • red lentils
  • butternut squash
  • lots of water

You don't give live yoghurt to a baby of 9 months old. Does your diet come from a pediatrician?

crostini · 11/07/2023 08:35

@jannier why not?

GameofStrife · 11/07/2023 08:36

Magic poo juice. Brown sugar, fresh orange, hot water. Only thing that ever worked for my youngest.

JustAPony · 11/07/2023 08:37

Freshly squeezed orange juice worked magic for my DCs.

LapinR0se · 11/07/2023 08:38

Freshly squeezed orange juice will be much better than apple. And just overall hydration. Water water water

YeCannaeChangeTheLawsOfPhysics · 11/07/2023 08:46

Of course Apple juice is fine. Baby can eat anything you can except while nuts and honey.

Other good natural laxatives

Pineapple
Prunes
Chicken broth
Scotch broth
Apples
Pears
Kiwi
Spinach
Rhubarb
Sweet potato
Beans
Lentils

I really wouldnt give plain sugar to a 9 month old

I've been weaning babies for over twenty years and have always given natural plain yoghurt or Greek yoghurt to babies from six/seven months old - why is it not suitable for babies?

As a 1 off to help treat constipation it’s absolutely ok, as a main meal, not so much!

kitchenhelprequired · 11/07/2023 09:01

Given that BRAT foods (banana, rice, apples and toast) are the best things to eat following D&V I wouldn't try any form if apple if constipation is an issue.

DappledThings · 11/07/2023 12:13

Kiwi was my go-to. Nothing wrong with a bit of apple juice though.

cakebytheoceon · 11/07/2023 12:16

Mango used to solve this for my little one x

soakinboakin · 11/07/2023 12:34

So this morning we had a half explosion, it was still a bit hard but also some loose so looks like the tiny bit of apple juice may have helped in the end.

I've got pears and mango in the fridge so going to fruit her up today !
