Chicken pox Q and sterlising !

flowerzchox · 11/06/2023 12:11

Have a couple of questions

Little one will be starting nursery next week and she is one in July so just wondering if I should ditch the sterliser before nursery? Any point sterlising few weeks before I'm stopping again?

Also re nursery and germs etc it's chicken pox season anyone getting their child vaccinated ?

X

You should be sterilising bottles made with formula for as long as you use them. Nothing else needs sterilising.

We couldn’t get my oldest vaccinated but we got our youngest vaccinated as CP has been around her nursery class a few times, it comes in waves, and she hasn’t caught CP despite picking every thing else up.

TheLurpackYears · 11/06/2023 12:18

As I understand it, the countries that offer CP vax as standard do so for economic reasons rather than health, so with that in mind, if you could afford the time off to care for them then no need. But I had my kids pre covid, I imagine it's changed how people feel about childhood illnesses.
I don't think sterilising will make a difference now she's older, just normal hand washing and catching snot in tissues.
Good luck with starting nursery, and happy birthday for July.

My eldest had the chicken pox vaccine. She didn’t catch it even when her younger brother had it (he got it before he was old enough for the jab) so money well spent in my opinion!

It’s 2 doses a few weeks apart and I think it needs to be at least 4 weeks after the MMR which is part of the 1 year jabs

Not sure about the sterilising as mine were bf but my 10 month old puts everything in his mouth so I think as long as bottles are clean then it’s no worse than what he’s doing the rest of the day anyway? 🤷‍♀️ I thought you didn’t need to sterilise after 6 months but I’m not up to date on that info, hopefully someone else will know!

I don't think that's correct - some babies have bottles/formula for years

Mine will still have bottles and formula for a while as she's cmpa so will keep things the same for a while

Re sterlising that's my thought process but wanted to speak to others

Nhs says 12 months but she's literally weeks off that and just thought I'd stop from 1st July

This isn't correct. The NHS doesn't offer routine vaccines for chicken pox in order to protect the elderly population from shingles - it is more economical for them to have little kids get ill and keep the virus circulating in order to keep shingles lower in the elderly population as shingles is deemed more expensive to treat.

OP - I got my DD vaccinated as chicken pox can cause quite nasty illness and scaring in some children. Yes, some get it very mild, but you just don't know which way it might go. And I think the NHS's reason for not vaccinating is unacceptable on a personal level given its potential impact on me and my family (whilst I can understand at a population level). I've seen some really awful spots on my friend's children, and so I chose to protect my daughter from that risk

Details here on the NHS's reasoning...

@sexnotgenders thank you yes I think will go ahead with the vaccine

There should be info on the side of your formula tin or check the NHS website. I’m sure it’s sterilise while using powdered formula.

@Summerishereagain my health visitor said 1 year when she had her 9-12 month check but just wondering what others did x

That’s probably because most people stop formula at 1 year but as a cmpa child the nice guidelines are to continue on formula for up to 2 years.

flowerzchox · 11/06/2023 19:41

Exactly so she said to stop sterlising at 1! She knows she's on neocate and can be used until 2yrs and said to stop at 1

DS had CMPA. We switched to Oatly Barista once he turned one.

SweetAndSourChick3n · 11/06/2023 19:45

We switched to Oatly Barista at 1 too as the dietician told us to.

All 3 of mine have had the chickenpox jab, totally worth the money imo.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 11/06/2023 20:05

Have the CP jab. Saves a whole load of pain for rhe child.

Bottles should be sterilised all of the time while using formula. Please don't stop sterilising.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/06/2023 20:07

I'd deffo get the cp vaccine.
We got our son the first dose but he'd actually already got cp - it can be in your system for a few weeks before showing. So he got cp anyway.
Annoyed we didn't do it sooner!

Lenor · 11/06/2023 20:16

You do need to sterilise whilst using powdered formula. The bacteria in formula can be very harmful if allowed to multiply, hence why they need sterilising.

Anything that isn’t used for formula doesn’t need sterilising.

I would vaccinate personally but can see reasons for both sides.

Good to know done fancy using neocate much longer - tastes vile

Ok thank you, another great reason to come off neocate

Why would someone stay on formula if you don't have to ?

Also her birthday is 21st July - and we go on holiday 3rd august - is this enough time for her to get the CP vac and shift any side affects ? Know it's a couple of weeks

OP posts:
pfisher · 12/06/2023 14:13

My DS was on Neocate until over 2 and I always sterilised because powdered formula isn't sterile and is dangerous no matter how much eating dirt/window licking they might do. They was no 'oatly barista' when he was that age but even if there was I wouldn't have switched because he was very slow to wean and the Neocate is a complete feed with all necessary proteins, minerals etc which oatly isn't.

Both of mine had the CP vaccine and I highly recommend - they have both been exposed multiple times and not caught it. No side effects from mine but you might not be able to get it done before your holiday depending on when her one year jabs are.

flowerzchox · 13/06/2023 14:51

Surely if you use hot water that kills the bacteria no?

OP posts:
NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 13/06/2023 15:08

Chicken Pox is a live vaccine so there needs to be a gap left between CP vaccine and other vaccines. I cant remember how long but i think a few weeks? So you might be better off doing after your holiday. Do you have the 1yr jabs booked yet?
