Can chicken pox be VERY mild?

My little boy is 11 months and has been a little unsettled the last few days - this morning he has a few little spots on his face and a few on his tummy and back. They’re light and don’t seem to be bothering him but he’s been just not quite himself. Spots fade under pressure, he’s eating and drinking well , a little warm but no temp so I’m not really worried. Just wondering if could it be chicken pox with only a few spots? Or will it get worse?

IME yes they can - dd had 15 spots altogether and wasn’t ill at all.

The spots are definitely little blisters though, they’re obviously chicken pox spots.

YouveGotAFastCar · 28/05/2023 19:59

Yes - but we’ve had a local authority education campaign at the moment about how you don’t gain full immunity from milder cases, so that’s something to bear in mind. It may mean he gets it again.

Yes they can, ds had chicken pox when he was 3 and it was a mild case, a few sporadic spots and didn’t feel unwell, unfortunately dd caught them from him and 13 days later she was covered head to toe, they were everywhere, some were infected and she was really unwell, nearly went to the hospital with her as she was quite lethargic. She was 1.

My DD had loads of spots but no fever or any suggestion of feeling unwell in any way at all.

DontTouchMyMug · 28/05/2023 20:00

Yes my niece had it very mild, whilst her poor sister was in hospital for a week with it. Very odd!

My 3 all had it roughly the same, quite under the weather, loads of spots, but ultimately not too serious at all.

SleepingisanArt · 28/05/2023 20:00

Yes - eldest had exactly one spot and was furious they had to stay home from pre-school. Youngest was covered - in every nook and cranny, on eye lids, had to be sedated so that they could sleep.

Workyticket · 28/05/2023 20:01

Yes - I was really ill with it, my little brother had it at the same time and only had 3 spots and no temperature!

Fantasmic143 · 28/05/2023 20:03

Definitely. My DD had it at aged 3 and was covered in spots - scalp, inside her ears, mouth - and was miserable for days. DS was 4 months so I assumed he would get it. I took him to the doctor with a sniffle and ONE spot - yep, chicken pox but that was it. The doctor said he would probably get it again as he had not had it bad enough to build up a good immunity but he hasn't - he is 21 now!

HoleyShit · 28/05/2023 20:04

Yeah my sons was pretty mild all things considered.

sanityisamyth · 28/05/2023 20:05

DS only had 3 spots when he had it aged 4 or so and never seemed ill with it. Didn't even seem to scratch them!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/05/2023 20:05

It could be mild.... or it could get worse!

DS has 3 spots for 4 days...... on day 5 he woke up absolutely covered!

lakesummer · 28/05/2023 20:05

Yes, I had it as an adult only. First time was very mild and second time was a bit worse.

Badbudgeter · 28/05/2023 20:06

My twins had mild chicken pox when they were toddlers had proper full blown chickenpox recently age 8.

Yes, we think our oldest had chicken pox without us knowing. He had a mild fever, and just generally felt awful, and then 2 weeks after that our youngest had a raging case of chicken pox.

We assumed the eldest would get it 2 weeks after that, but nothing came of it. The only thing we can think is that the oldest had it so mildly we didn't even notice. It was a nursery holiday so by chance had avoided exposing anyone there.

Thats really interesting @YouveGotAFastCar as my oldest child's best pal has just come down with it and has just come down with it after they were playing together all week. It was only last Dec he had it, but will be interesting to see if he gets it again.

And by interesting I mean terrifying and awful, it was horrible with my youngest!

HamHand · 28/05/2023 20:16

Yes. My dd had it when she was 3, only had about 5 spots but was pretty unwell before they came out, we really only knew what it was because it took out everyone at nursery! She did get shingles in year 6 though which is very unusual, I don’t know if it was related. My 2 younger sons both had mild, but recognisable cases at about the same age, but had an absolutely hideous second bout together when they were about 4 and 8. Every part of them was covered. With our youngest we got her a private vaccination because of this (I have very big age gaps!)

lljkk · 28/05/2023 20:20

It usually starts more mild & gets worse later

Mine was mild as an adult
DS1 had it mild as a toddler
baby DD was mostly quite mild

Other DC took CP a bit or much harder

Yuja · 28/05/2023 20:21

Yes my DD has it very mildly at 11 months old. It didn't give her full immunity though so she got it again when she was 5, but again mildly

RelaxingClassics · 28/05/2023 20:23

Yes my son got a very mild dose of chicken pox when he was the same age as your son. He then got it again but much worse when he was 5.

cptartapp · 28/05/2023 20:30

Ds2 caught CP off his brother at one week old. I was bf him but he had several very feint spots. Not unwell at all.
He's 18 now and never had it again.

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 28/05/2023 21:44

Thanks everyone! He’s gone to bed okay, so we’ll see how the night goes - poor little boy! Interesting about getting it again after mild cases, will definitely bear that in mind.

I had it very mildly. About 3 spots.

I gave it to my mum who had the most horrendous bout of it.

I'm 47 and haven't had it again.

lilybloom2 · 28/05/2023 22:02

I had 2 spots with chicken pox at 14. I was a little sleepy but otherwise fine. My dad has more spots at 2 years old but no other symptoms. We are now both immune

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/05/2023 22:08

Thought my eldest had gotten off lightly- then two years later I was shocked she had full blown chicken pox- her first “case” was actually bad hand foot and mouth that everyone assumed chicken pox as it was doing the nursery rounds.

Hellocatshome · 28/05/2023 22:08

Yes my DS got chicken pox on his first birthday, he had about 4 or 5 spots and wasn't poorly at all. He has jjust got shingles aged 16 and it's a tiny patch that doesn't bother him at all. I guess some people are just not as affected by the virus as others.

KnottyKnitting · 28/05/2023 22:12

Yes can be!when DD2 was 7 months she caught chicken pox from her sister. She had precisely 7 spots! She was a little fractious for a few days but nothing more than a slight cold.
