Itchy bum- HELP

violetcuriosity · 21/05/2023 21:45

My DD7 has had an 'itchy bum' at night on and off for several years now. We have tried working her multiple times, sudocreme, eurax, had swabs done, canestan, Vaseline, aveeno, even piriton before bed. Nothing works for long. It really really upsets her and honestly I'm at the end of my tether with it. We've tried talking to her to see if she's worried about anything because she's so tearful with it but she says there's not. Has anyone else had this? I'm a teacher so know this is a common anxiety problem but just don't know what to do anymore. It's nearly 10pm and she's still up crying her eyes out.

Have you treated everyone in the household for thread worms?

Smarshian · 21/05/2023 21:47

I was going to say worms. Have you tried getting a treatment?

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/05/2023 21:50

Second vote for threadworms. As a teacher have you never come across them? I've got them from kids in my class before (hate them but easy to kill with a pill).

They do genuinely become active at night, so if she's got them, she's not putting it on as a ruse to stay up.

Worms can cause itchiness at night time. Some over the counter tablets for all the family might be the answer here. Sorted things out very quickly when my DD had a similar issue.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/05/2023 21:52

Hang on. 'Working her' is a typo for 'worming her' isn't it? If so, sorry for advice you already know.

KingofCats · 21/05/2023 21:56

Inspect at night with a torch and see if you can see worms. You may need to really go all out on deworming everyone and boil washing the bedding!

violetcuriosity · 21/05/2023 22:06

Shit sorry yeah 'working' was meant to say 'worming'. I will worm us all again tomorrow but it doesn't seem to be that. I've just gone to check her and she's put a damp muslin between her legs and is literally whimpering in her sleep. Going to get another docs appt tomo we can't go on like this.

Lichen sclerosis? This can affect children as well as adult women

HeartOrHeadDecision · 21/05/2023 22:35

I'd to treat against yeast infection

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 22/05/2023 06:56

Could it be eczema?

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/05/2023 06:59

It was Sunday night when you posted OP - is there something wrong at school that she hasn't told you about? Is she worried she isn't doing well enough or being bullied?

She does have eczema so potentially linked- at the doctors now.

This was our thinking but it was also Friday night too and has been on and off for about 2 years. When I spoke to her Friday she did cry and say she was worried about Year 4 and the work being too hard but I don't know if she was just trying to find a reason for how upset she was. We're at the doctors now, I've kept her off today to give her some TLC and try and get an answer.

Have you tried eumovate?

HeidiUpTheMountain · 22/05/2023 10:40

How is her digestion? I overproduce stomach acid and it makes my poo acidic and very irritating to the delicate membranes there. Perhaps worth exploring if she was a colicky baby?

gamerchick · 22/05/2023 10:46

I think I would try something that has a bit of an anaesthetic in it. Like germoline with that stuff added or a pile cream or even bonjela I've heard some people use to numb that area a bit to see if it helps. Obviously do a bit of research first.

Poor bairn, nothing worse than an maddening itch.

violetcuriosity · 22/05/2023 12:16

Updating in case anyone comes across this thread with the same issue- Interestingly they have sent her for further testing for type 1 diabetes which I wasn't expecting and have told me to worm her again for now. Thanks for your replies.

Worming treatment is 2 doses several days apart, plus all the hoovering, cleaning, washing. You have to follow the instructions to the letter. If there is a carrier at nursery or school it is a constant battle.

Mamabear04 · 22/05/2023 14:58

@violetcuriosity we are having similar issues for about a year with DD who is 3yo. GPS haven't been very helpful but are sending her for blood tests (waiting for the appointment for a month now). We thought it could have been thrush and its definitely not worms. I know DD has been having nightmares and has had a lot of big changes (potty training, big girl bed, new sibling, starting nursery all in a year) so thought it could be linked to anxiety but it's hard for a 3yo to tell exactly what's wrong...

The eurax cream worked really well for a while as did germaloids, might be worth a try? Have you tried canestan? That's safe to use. I. Have. Literally. Tried. Everything. 🤣

Your poor daughter. I really hope you get a solution for her soon.

comfyfeet · 22/05/2023 22:28

Hope she's sorted out asap.

Mine gets similar, did yours as a baby? Mine did and it flares every so often and Vaseline is one of the best things.

bornintheuk2 · 22/05/2023 22:30

I'd second the Lichen Sclerosis suggestion. Children can get it and it is an awful condition for some. I have an incredibly itchy anus and germaloids cream settles me at night. Moisturising will also help with a thick balm with calandula or chickweed.

violetcuriosity · 23/05/2023 10:36

I'm going to look into lichen sclerosis now, I really really hope it isn't that 😢. We had another awful night with her still up at 11pm crying, we ended up phoning my mum because I had reached my limit and then I gave her a 'large' spoonful of piriton and that helped settle her 😂. Thank you for all your replies, it seems like such a small issue but everything feels bigger at night and I also have a 6 week old baby so really need all the sleep I can get. DD7 is currently sleeping worse than the baby 🤣

I don't think she had it as a baby but it's definitely been going on since she started school which made me always think worms. Sorry you're going through it too 😞
