Hi

I am 37 yrs of age and have a only 7 year old ds.

I feel like such a old mom especially at the school gates.

All of my ds's mates moms are in their early twenties.
I feel ancient.
Does anybody feel like this.

ha, yes, especially when you realise the grandmothers are similar age as you (am a lot older then you...)

stressedouttoday · 19/02/2008 10:41

Madness how old are you if you don,t mind me asking.

How old are your children.

I'm 36 and expecting a baby

I feel physically old I must admit

I don't give a toss about being older than other mums having babies, I just wish I didn't feel so tired

Im 37 too and sometimes i do feel old at the school. My ds 1 is 8. Noticing it more as i get older. However, there are more moms that look older at our school, if you get me? Or at least, they look older!

feetheart · 19/02/2008 10:43

Oh yes, and I'm a lot older too!!
I've got a 2 year old and a (very nearly 5 year old)
However I REFUSE to look or act my age

Anchovy · 19/02/2008 10:43

Its quite interesting - I am loads older than you and don't particularly feel a lot older than other mothers round here.

My Ds is 6 and DD is 4 - I'm 43. I would say that I am probably at the older end of mothers in the DCs class but not the oldest. You would probably be the youngest mother in both of their classes!

carmenelectra · 19/02/2008 10:54

I REFUSE also to look/act my age. And to be fair i probably dress up more than some of the younger mothers! Then again, i obviously need to!

feetheart · 19/02/2008 10:59

Know what you mean about dressing up a bit more.
Then again a grey, pink or white tracksuit just wouldn't suit me

cmotdibbler · 19/02/2008 11:01

I'm 36, and DS is 21 months. When I was on mat leave I went to the mum and baby groups, and they were all talking about their weddings 1 - 2 years before etc. We were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary, so it was a bit weird.

princessosyth · 19/02/2008 11:05

All the mums at ds's nursery had their babies when they were in their thirties so you wouldn't feel old around here. I am 35 and ds is 3.6 which is pretty average, 31/32 seems to be average for a first time mum here.

OrmIrian · 19/02/2008 11:11

Yes. All of the mums in my DCs' classes are younger than me, even the ones with teenagers. I started late. But it's work that really freaks me out - when I look at the grey-haired men in suits that look soooo old to me....and then realise that they are the same sort of age

Hassled · 19/02/2008 11:11

37 is young! I'm 41 and my youngest is 5 - I reckon I'm the second oldest Mum in his class, but most are a lot younger. Some of them even go clubbing .

I had DS1 at 21 so was used to being the young Mum - this old business has come as a nasty shock.

lillypie · 19/02/2008 11:13

I'm 43 and dd is 11 months.I'm guessing I probably WILL be the oldest mum at the school gates

ArmadilloDaMan · 19/02/2008 11:16

You'd fit in fine at ds pre-school.

I'm 25 and must be the youngest by about a decade.

It does make me feel uncomfortable.

HuwEdwards · 19/02/2008 11:16

Am 45, my youngest is in reception. I guess I am possibly the oldest mum out of reception mums, but I comfort myself with the fact that I always look presentable and am fairly physically fit AND with the fact that friend of mine whose DD is starting school next year is 1 whole year older than me

BeMyLilBaby · 19/02/2008 12:14

on the upside ladies at least you dont get any comments about "babies having babies" im sure you all look very young, as long as your all healthy im sure its beneficial to be older

BirdyArms · 19/02/2008 12:17

Was 34 when i had ds1 and expected to feel old but I am right about in the middle of teh age range of friends I've made with similar aged children.

PetitFilou1 · 19/02/2008 16:07

Ditto Franny - 35 and expecting no3 and feel wiped out. Am only 13 weeks (sob)

chocfest · 19/02/2008 17:53

i am 43 with a 7 year old, and do not feel old at the school gate. In fact as mothers have babies these days well into their 40's. so their could be mums from 20 to 50 at he reception door!

chocfest · 19/02/2008 17:55

i mean 'there not their!

madness · 19/02/2008 20:58

well, I'm in my forties and still have one more to start school in a few years time...

crapmomonMN · 19/02/2008 21:04

I am 36 and have a (just) 3 yr old and I do feel old because of my parenting views - alot different to those of mums who are in their 20's. But my mum was an older mum (older than me) and I get it from her. Nowt like being brought up in the war!!!!!!

Must say dont feel old as in taking him to nursery with younger mothers around - think he keeps me younger can do a mean flip on his tramploline!

Flibbertyjibbet · 19/02/2008 21:11

Not if yours go to the same school as mine lillipie!
I am 45 with 3yo and 20m boys. Not my choice to have them so late, they arrived after we gave up trying .

Mind you I must have a 'wise old sage' air about me - at playgroups etc younger mums quite often seek my advice on non-parenting matters ie house buying, money matters, job hunting. Its funny when they ask me if I want to come on a night out though, as if I could manage a night club these days!
See you at the school gates Sept 09 ladies - I am sure I'll be the oldest!

DaphneHarvey · 19/02/2008 21:15

Agree with Anchovy - it depends where you live. I had my children at 38 and very nearly 41. My best friend was same age as me when she had her son. Quite a lot of people I know were older than me when they had their first child, come to think of it. A friend of friend is just about to have her second child, any day now, and she was 44 in January.

In my NCT class I think the average age for first-timers was about 34.

That said, there are children in my DD's class at school whose grandmothers are younger than me! Oh well, I had them when I had them and if I'd had them at any other time they wouldn't be the children they are IYSWIM so no regrets for me.
