How many muslins?

disneyreg · 12/05/2023 22:26

Such an odd question I know but I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby and just getting organised.

I've heard quite a few people say get alot of muslins because you need them everywhere and will go through loads. I'd Rather have enough because I don't plan on doing washing daily!

So how many do people recommend having?

Plan on having both big blanket/swaddle size ones and smaller standard sized ones.

Also if anyone has any must have recommendations for things for a baby/new mum please also comment with them! Appreciate any advice I get 🥰

How many days do you want to go without washing. Then I'd say 5-6 per day you can always get more if they are particularly messy.

IKEA do a pack of 20 white face clothes, they're invaluable. Get two packets. Also metanium nappy rash ointment - it's a miracle.

This answers my question perfectly I should have asked how many am I likely to go through a day rather than making my question so long winded 😅 thanks 😊

Thankyou I will have a look next time I go. Ahh I literally just bought metanium nappy cream this week- should I be using after each change or just if I notice any soreness? Thanks 😊

I had what felt like 350 million and still I felt like I never had a clean one! Bloody CMPA, reflux and drool. 😅 The extra large ones were fab though.

Get metanium cream it's literal magic in a tube!

AbsoluteYawns · 12/05/2023 22:36

Start with 20-30! Sounds an insane amount but they have a million uses.

TooMinty · 12/05/2023 22:36

Double what you think plus some for good luck. But seriously, just buy a couple of packs and send someone out to buy more if you need them...

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/05/2023 22:37

You can never really have too many!

disneyreg · 12/05/2023 22:38

Thanks everyone I'm typically an over buyer but definitely don't have enough so will grab some more 🥰

Definitely get more. Honestly if you have a baby that needs them you won't want to be constantly washing just to ensure there is a clean one. We had days where we had used 10 before lunchtime.

If baby doesn't need them then no harm you can always pass them on.

Also for metanium cream I always used it at the first sign of redness and by the next change it had normally begun to work.

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/05/2023 22:44

I never managed to find much use for muslins although they are good dusters. I wouldn't spend money on things like that now, or certainly not on so many. Wait until your baby is born and buy what you really need then would be my advice. DIL has a newborn and a stack of muslins ; she uses one a day so 3-6 in her case are plenty .

OneCup · 12/05/2023 22:45

Well I bought a pack because I was told I would need so many. Never used one.
Honestly just buy the bare minimum and gradually buy what you need.

Blessedbethefruitz · 12/05/2023 22:45

Absolutely useless for cmpa severe reflux ds1. We quickly switched to those thick fluffy blankets that dry fast. But he's now 4, and his 15 month old sister has no such problems. They're great for noses (including grown ups with allergies - bodies change after birth lol).

I had 5 big ones with dd, they were great for blankets to prevent overheating, and for breastfeeding in early days or out and about. Also have about 40 standard sized ones, more than we'd ever need.

Lavenderblume · 12/05/2023 22:47

My kids are both primary school age now but I still use the muslins even now! We use them as hand towels and hair towels/turbans.

gallina · 12/05/2023 22:50

Use sudocrem after each change as a barrier. And metanium if you notice any soreness. It is a miracle cream

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 12/05/2023 22:51

Mine were incredibly sicky, we must have had 50 muzzies.

I think you might need to prepare yourself for daily laundry, though, sorry… even though they’re not huge loads, we found there were often items that needed washing there and then.

rickandmorts · 12/05/2023 22:53

Best thing for nappy rash is to let their bum air out as much as possible. DD is 5 months old now and not had nappy rash yet touch wood 🤞. I put her changing mat on our bed a few times a day with a muslin under her and let her have some nappy free time and she loves it 😍

DifficultBloodyWoman · 12/05/2023 22:54

I’ve got to ask, what size muslins did you have and what did you use them for???

I had three or four what I thought were quite large ones (a little over 1m square). I used them as light weight swaddles and to half cover the car seat in summer to keep the sun off DD as the window shield was too small.

I could have quite easily managed without them.

I feel Ike we are either talking about different things or I am missing a trick?

DifficultBloodyWoman · 12/05/2023 22:54

Oh, and a friend kept telling me I needed larger muslins for a more effective swaddle?

Hensintheskirting · 12/05/2023 22:54

I think about 876 is a good number. My youngest is now almost 10 and I still use them as tea towels! You simply can't have enough muslins OP

DelurkingAJ · 12/05/2023 22:55

Don’t forget you!

my go-to list for new Mums is:

  • lanolin ointment (for breasts)
  • glycerine suppositories (don’t ask)
  • lavender oil (for baths)
  • decent breast pads
  • thermal mug (for drinks that you’ll never finish)

I didn’t know about most of these first time around…

I've tried to get at least 3 of everything ie waterproof mattress covers and sheets for next to me, pram ect with the hope I won't have to 😅 but if I do I do Itl just have to be my new normal. Currently have one washing day a week where I do 3/4 loads and it's all washed dried and away in one day but I guess I can kiss that life goodbye 🤣

All three of mine were sick constantly. I needed at least two to feed with (one tucked into my waistband as they would puke as they unlatched, and one to wind with as huge quantities came up then too. One over the shoulder even if it was hours since they’d last fed. One under their chin when we put them in the car seat as that movement made them sick, etc etc.

We weren’t precious either, we used them until they were drenched in vom, but we still got through many muslins per day.

Thankyou! Just one of them things isn't it we always come last. Other than some lansinoh i don't have anything for myself yet but did start to make a list today.

Which breast pads did you find the best for comfort/ being absorbent and staying put wise? I don't know where to start with them tbh!
