How many muslins?

disneyreg · 12/05/2023 22:26

Such an odd question I know but I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby and just getting organised.

I've heard quite a few people say get alot of muslins because you need them everywhere and will go through loads. I'd Rather have enough because I don't plan on doing washing daily!

So how many do people recommend having?

Plan on having both big blanket/swaddle size ones and smaller standard sized ones.

Also if anyone has any must have recommendations for things for a baby/new mum please also comment with them! Appreciate any advice I get 🥰

Omg I read this as 'how many Muslims' 🤦‍♀️ I should go to bed!

DelurkingAJ · 12/05/2023 23:03

I used the lansinoh pads. I once tried cheap and cheerful and I swear they were filled with cotton wool. It was not pretty. I have had friends have great success with reusable pads but after the fiasco we had with washable nappies with DS1 I wasn’t going there!

Really depends on your baby! Dc 1 very refluxy, went through one each feed! Dc2 very rarely sick and could get away with just a couple a day. I would buy at least 20 to start with.

CovetedAsFuck · 12/05/2023 23:07

Ahh, muslins <memories face>

I’m always amazed when people say they hardly used them. Just shows you, everyone does things so differently. It felt like we were constantly reaching for one.

I felt strongly about them being plain white or neutral/unbleached, never patterned (we had lots of other patterned stuff, we are not minimalists)

elliejjtiny · 12/05/2023 23:08

I had about 30 million I think, was just about enough! Seriously though, you need more than you think, especially with a reflux baby. I used to use them to put them under ds head on every awkward to wash surface like the playmat, bouncy chair, car seat, sling etc to catch the worst of the puke and dribble.

SadBut · 12/05/2023 23:10

I've still no clue what one is supposed to do with a muslin
Midwife insisted I buy some (££££), for EVERY pregnancy for some reason
DC3 now 14!
So my answer is you'll use 0, but will be made to purchase at least £25 worth per pregnancy

elliejjtiny · 12/05/2023 23:11

Ps get the pretty coloured ones (bright or dark colours) as the plain white ones look like old dish cloths after a few washes. Also the flat terry nappies are good if you need something more absorbent than a muslin.

namechange110 · 12/05/2023 23:11

I read this a how many muslims and was so confused for a minute

shelbabab · 12/05/2023 23:12

I didn't really like them tbh. I had about 10 think they were all gifted. I also had a very sicky baby so sometimes used them as an extra long bib or extra layer to catch the sick lol.

I'd just buy a pack and see if u like them.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 12/05/2023 23:00

All three of mine were sick constantly. I needed at least two to feed with (one tucked into my waistband as they would puke as they unlatched, and one to wind with as huge quantities came up then too. One over the shoulder even if it was hours since they’d last fed. One under their chin when we put them in the car seat as that movement made them sick, etc etc.

We weren’t precious either, we used them until they were drenched in vom, but we still got through many muslins per day.

Thank you. DD wasn’t too pukey but we did get through A LOT of bibs.

Shouldbedoing · 12/05/2023 23:15

A friend passed on 2 x 3 packs to.me when her third child just didn't need them. Prior to that she found them essential. We made good use. Muslin became a sucky cloth/comforter for DC1

Azandme · 12/05/2023 23:17

We had 42.

DD had reflux, we went through two or three a feed!

Namechanger355 · 12/05/2023 23:38

Honestly 30-40 is a good start

we use so many a day with DD2 - 4 months. They are a lifesaver

we didn’t use it with DD1 after she was about 18 months but they were useful before then

I’d say you can never have enough muslins, sleepsuits or bodyvests

also agree with the pp re metanium - it’s so incredibly effective at treating nappy rash. You can use eg bepanthen or sudocrem as a barrier to prevent nappy rash

definitely get a travel mug - jt will mean you can enjoy a tea once a day! As honestly you can’t have a tea in a normal cup if you are sitting on the sofa for 16 hours a day breastfeeding

lanisoh breast pads are useful - and don’t come off as have two sticky bits

also nipple shields may be helpful if you struggle with latch

if you do use formula at some point - eg even post weaning, then the perfect prep is the best- a lifesaver. Means you can make a bottle in 2 mins - ideal when you have a screaming baby

the one thing you don’t need is a top and tail bowl. Just use a bowl of cooked boiled water and cotton wool

Needmorelego · 13/05/2023 00:27

I never used any 🤷🏻‍♂️

trevh · 13/05/2023 00:34

For my last 2 babies I started using the large muslins too - they're perfect for in the warm weather also as a lightweight blanket.

The number depends on the baby, one of mine was quite sicky after feeds so would go through 10 a day. My youngest I barely needed them so didn't really use the small ones just the large ones which were perfect for covering up whilst feeding too.

I also agree re the patterned muslins. I got most of mine from Aden and Anais and the babies loved looking at the patterns.

Thankyou I will have a look next time I go. Ahh I literally just bought metanium nappy cream this week- should I be using after each change or just if I notice any soreness? Thanks 😊

The yellow one? Just when sore tbh only ever use cream when sore. It's amazing stuff btw.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 13/05/2023 01:33

If you use them, you will use eleventy billion of them. If you don't find them helpful, you will have a neat stack in your cupboard forever.

DS2 took to using them as a comforter. Carried one around all the time (think Linus from Peanuts), used to suck on the end all the time (pulling it out if his mouth looked like one of those magician scarf tricks...).

Because he dragged them around I was in the eleventy billion Club, while probably only using half a dozen for DS1.

They were very useful to have about even after the DC grew up, found loads of uses for them. Quite miss having them now....

I did too 😂

OP, I'm due my first in 2 weeks and have washed and counted everything and we have about 20 small ones and 10 large ones. If I need anymore, we can get them from the nearest supermarket.

The best advice I've received is "don't overbuy because these days, there is nothing that cannot be delivered next day on Amazon if it's not in stock near you"

Congrats and good luck! X

shakeitoffsis · 13/05/2023 01:44

Merrow · 13/05/2023 01:45

Muslins are entirely child dependent - I felt I used a mountain with DS1 and his permanently runny nose!

My essential items are a thermos cup and a sling. I'd look up your local sling library - really helpful to find a sling that feels comfortable and also help with how to position the baby safely.

NotMeSecretFormular · 13/05/2023 02:42

15-20. It's just easier to have loads ready than keep washing.

Hatscats · 13/05/2023 02:53

I had way way too many - I’d buy 10 then add if you need to, second baby and still only using 1-2 a day. Never used any bibs either! Also never used any nipple cream, breastmilk works better. Honestly most stuff I would wait and see, I leaked loads with my first so breastmilk collector shells are good, second I’m feeding a toddler too so havent leaked at all so not needed.

DragonbornMum · 13/05/2023 07:34

I got loads of muslins, anticipating they would be used all the time. Ended up using 1-2 a week.

Wait until after you have the baby to buymore; you may not need them.
