Where does baby sleep during day?

Hi all,

looking for some advice. Baby is 12 weeks old and currently naps on me during the day. We have a swing/seat he sits in during the day too but doesn’t fall asleep in it or wakes up if I put him in it asleep.

what do you use for baby to lay/sit in when they get too big for the swing downstairs?

is it just things like a sit me up seat for when they are a bit older? I want to try get in to nap downstairs on something so would it be like a travel cot downstairs as he is too big for Moses basket. From 6 months I will start putting him in his cot in our room and leaving him upstairs.

I was debating getting a high chair but one that reclines far and can be lowered to the floor but then that’s like another seat?

thanks

We co sleep at night so my 4 month old is in our bed, but during the day she naps in a next-to-me cot in the kitchen (all sides zipped up obviously!) our downstairs is quite open plan so she sleeps in there and I can potter around getting things done. It works well for us. I’m sure at some point she’ll get too old to go to sleep with everything going on around her and she’ll outgrow the cot in a few months too so I’ll prob get a travel cot then which can go either upstairs or downstairs to use for naps

How on Earth can he be too big for a Moses basket? My babies were both big but stayed in one until around 5/6 months.

I would get a travel cot downstairs if you can't fit him in one.

LapinR0se · 09/05/2023 08:54

I put my baby in her cot for all naps and checked on her regularly

9/10 DD would sleep in her pushchair for naps because that's where she fell asleep.

PurBal · 09/05/2023 09:00

@aSofaNearYou I moved DS out of his Moses basket at 4 weeks, he was nearly the whole length (long baby) and would wake himself up if he hit the sides.

@H44123 we had a chair like that but I can’t remember what it’s called, it could be at table height or floor height (or options in between) and had a number of reclining positions. Could be static or rocking. It was the only thing we had downstairs. I’d rock DS to sleep in it or transfer him if he fell asleep on me. It was months before he’d sleep in his cot during the day.

Mine outgrew her Moses basket at 8 weeks or so - also started waking herself up by touching the sides. We did have a travel cot set up in the living room but she preferred to contact nap until 8 months. Have you tried the pram bassinet? It’s a good option if you have one and easy to move around. It’s best for them to nap lying flat so I don’t think it’s recommended to let them nap in bouncers or any type of seat for a long time, especially for small babies like yours. Now at 10 months mine will finally nap in the cot or I will leave her in the pram if she’s fallen asleep in there.

H44123 · 09/05/2023 09:14

Yeah my boy is long and wakes himself up in the Moses basket hitting the sides etc.

I think he will only contact nap for a while yet but I just didn’t know what else you can put him in when he outgrows the swing chair.

I might try the pram when he’s a bit older or use the travel cot but I doubt that will work because he is already super nosey and wakes for every little sound.

I like the swing as the seat comes off so I can put him in it and move him round the house getting jobs done for a little bit. I just didn’t know what they lay in/ relax in when they get older

thank you all for your replies

Ok I'm getting the sense it's more about the baby waking themselves up in the Moses basket than them physically not fitting in it - my DD filled it and she touched the sides, she just didn't wake herself up when she did.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 09/05/2023 09:19

One thing I have learned is that Moses baskets, like cots, come in different sizes. We had a big one that babies used until 7 ish months when they were too much at risk of tipping it over. Some are very small. It’s not much to do with the size of the baby.

Having said that we only used it upstairs.

Babies fell asleep wherever we were, so in the carrier, on the sofa beside me, on a play mat on the floor. Rarely just cuddled in arms because then I’d be trapped under them so would always use sling or carrier instead then so I couldn’t get trapped. But we didn’t have a set nap time or schedule so if they were tired, they had the option or sleeping wherever or not sleeping, many times they took the latter option!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 09/05/2023 09:22

I've used the pushchair since day 1 for his naps when he was too little to be upstairs. It worked well as he spent a lot of time in it anyway dur to school.runs etc. Also means i can pop out to shopa or for a walk without having to wake him up.

9 months now and he still has at least 1 day nap in it

blueflame1 · 09/05/2023 09:24

Honestly, I put mine in her cot from about 3 months. I left the door open and had the monitor on and would check on her regularly.

Ironically she's 7 months now and I'm back to cosleeping since she's had a huge regression and won't sleep in her cot longer than 20 mins 🙃

Snugglemonkey · 09/05/2023 09:28

We have a travel cot and snuzpod, neither of which she will tolerate. On me used to work but not since last week. Now it is just in the pram, being walked 🙁 it is a pain!

wibblewobbleball · 09/05/2023 09:31

On me. In their cot/next to me. On my bed. On the floor on their playmat. In a sling. In their pushchair. In a travel cot.

Garethkeenansstapler · 09/05/2023 09:34

Pram in the hallway

Wicksytricksy · 09/05/2023 09:56

Pram, cot, bed with me, bouncy chair, the floor on a playmat, in a sling, on any human who'd sit still long enough, in the car, once on a pile of toys that they'd formed into a cushion.

Getting a baby who'll sleep in a range of places is a godsend - I've got a friend who was so strict about cot naps in the early days that her DS only ever napped in a cot so never had a full day out the house until he dropped his nap at three.

LeafHunter · 09/05/2023 10:08

In the cot and I had the monitor on and moved around the house so I could check on him. He’s now 5 months.

CycleGirl20 · 09/05/2023 13:36

Mine slept in the sling on me, so at least I could do stuff other than sit holding her. She wouldn't sleep alone until she was about 5 months old. The she slept in her buggy

Babyboomtastic · 09/05/2023 13:45

It was a mixture of:

  • in a sling
  • on me
  • on a playmat, or a blanket folded up
-buggy

They've never napped in cots

Workawayxx · 09/05/2023 13:55

DD was a good napper so would often fall asleep (or could be placed) on a sheepskin blanket on the floor. DS used to nap in the pram or pushchair base (a sheepskin liner made it lovely and comfy for him) as it meant I could leap up and push a bit if he was waking up after 5 mins and should be still sleeping!

Swaddled in the Moses basket so they can't hit the sides ?

Gosh. It's almost as if babies are all different shapes and sizes.

Thanks for the sarcasm, definitely necessary on an otherwise friendly thread. My babies were both over 10lb, that's why I asked. I've never seen a Moses basket that couldn't fit a12 week old in it, though obviously I get that they might not settle in them if their arms and legs hit the edge.

PinkOrangeTulip · 11/05/2023 17:15

On me mostly but also the pram & in the carrier, he loves that & falls asleep within a minute! We co-sleep so he’s used to me being close. I did the same with my dd who’s 3 now. She never liked the cot either 😆

ElmTree22 · 11/05/2023 19:14

Dd goes in cot in her room with monitor on

Cluelessfirstimer · 12/05/2023 06:26

Up to 6 months in the pram or on me. Naps were horrific until then so I would take him for a walk. It was the best way we both got peace!

When he could crawl coincidently he was happy to nap in his cot upstairs. I did set up the travel cot downstairs but a sneeze wakes this boy up so that just didn't work for us.
