When did your baby walk?

My son is 16 months old and started taking his first steps at 14 months. He can physically walk and will sometimes walk from kitchen to lounge and back again etc. But mainly he chooses to crawl. It's like he just prefers crawling. I'm not worried in the slightest but just curious to see if any other babies are the same?
Most people I've spoke to say they babies started walking and that was it, they were off!

I think what you are experiencing is pretty normal. Especially if they are quite quick at crawling.

mondaytosunday · 07/05/2023 09:47

My son could walk but only holding in to our hands - so physically he could do it but he didn't take those independent steps til 18 months - then he was off - he's a fitness fanatic now (19).
Daughter I think walked at 14 months.

My daughter started walking at 9 months but she never really crawled much at all so that was really her only way to get around. I think they each just have their own preference as to how they want to move around. I remember a neighbour with a baby about 16 months who had taken some steps but bum-shuffled everywhere and they were rapid at it so it seemed much more efficient for them than walking.

Both of mine walking at a year. But every child is different.

Staggering I should say 🤣

My DD is nearly 15m so I found this thread interesting. She is very confident walking/trying to run holding 1 of our fingers and can walk for long periods of time outside like this- up to 10mins or so. She constantly wants our hands to walk round the flat non-stop.
Sometimes when she is tired wants 2 hands- which I try to avoid as it hurts my back.
However independently she will walk between my partner and I (if we turn it in to a game) but only up to about 6/7 steps- her record is 10.
If I let go of her in a standing position she can stand for several seconds if distracted but normally drops straight to the floor.
She is a very fast crawler and also moves well in a sort of half crawl- 1 knee and 1 foot which means she can hold something in 1 hand while moving.
Can't yet get herself into standing without something/someone to pull up on.
It feels like it's more confidence to do it alone than can't do it as when holding our hand she is very steady and isn't really using us for balance even. I'm hoping she is confident enough to do it on her own soon as the constant walking around at home is exhausting and means I can't get anything done.

My two started walking independently at about 13 months. DD1 didn't crawl at all - just furniture walked - until we went on holiday where they had carpets, rather than wooden flooring. Realised she couldn't get a purchase on our smooth flooring so had given up on trying to crawl.

I stopped having them or I reckon another and it would've walked out!

😂😂😂

My 2 were both 10 months…my niece was 16 months, but she had staff in her 2 big cousins who’d do everything for her, so why bother walking 😂

ShowOfHands · 07/05/2023 10:38

DD walked at 11 months and never crawled again. We now know it's because she has a problem with her knees and it was painful for her.

DS walked at 9 months and carried on doing a mix of crawling and walking for a couple of months. Walking was for adulation from adults, crawling was for getting to biscuits and/or trouble as quickly as possible.

It's normal!

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 07/05/2023 10:40

My DS walked at 2 years and 1 month and DD walked at 11 months. Every child is different and there is no "normal". There's a range but it's pretty huge. Often children walk and then realise crawling is much faster until they've really got a handle on walking

YouJustDoYou · 07/05/2023 10:40

My first born was 9 months, 2nd and 3rd was about 12 months.

FlounderingFruitcake · 07/05/2023 10:40

DD walked at 9 months but hadn’t crawled so she was just off walking. DS crawled first, walked at 12 months and definitely did a mix of both for a while- if he wanted to get somewhere quickly, wasn’t sure of where he was or very tired then he’d crawl.

Todaynotalways · 07/05/2023 10:42

Me - 10mo
DD - 18mo

She is now a perfectly active and mobile 6yo.

Natsku · 07/05/2023 10:49

My first walked at 9 months and that was it, pretty much stopped crawling altogether (which she only did for about a month before she started walking, well bear walking rather than crawling) while my youngest started walking at 15 months but still crawled a lot (again not actually crawling, he kinda dragged himself along with his hands which was actually quite worrying and got him assessed by my physio but it was just his weird style) as he slowly built up confidence and stamina in walking.

Ahwig · 07/05/2023 10:51

My son walked at 9 months confidently having never crawled at all. He hadn't spent any time with other babies but at 9.5 months he started going to a child minder and was amazed at what they were doing. He then learnt to crawl. He would change his mode of movement depending on who he was with.

Mabelface · 07/05/2023 11:04

12 months
17 months
18 months

All within perfectly normal range.

ApplePie20 · 07/05/2023 12:01

DS never crawled or bum shuffled. He cruised around furniture and holding our hands for well over 6 months. He just let go one day at 16 months. One friends DC was similar to yours (combined crawling and walking for ages) and one was pretty much climbing and running before their first birthday. I think what you are describing sounds pretty normal.

Pahpahpotato · 07/05/2023 12:07

They all vary so much, all normal! My boy took his first steps at 13 months but didn’t really walk properly and reliably til just shy of 15 months, I think. He’s now 18 months and does not ever stop 😂

Highfivemum · 07/05/2023 12:08

DC 1 .. 9 months
DC 2.. ran at 10 months never crawled
DC 3. 10 months
DC 4 .. 11 months
DC 5..11 months
DC 6 … 13 months as he had all the others to fetch and carry for him

Capitulatingpanda · 07/05/2023 12:21

18 months for first (furniture cruising for ages before he tried to walk on his own) and 8 months for second. First is fairly cautious, second is a terrifying daredevil.

sommeliermama · 08/05/2023 08:57

I haven't had my baby yet so will be interested to see in the future but I personally didn't walk until 21 months! I bum shuffled and was extremely fast around a room apparently 😂
