When did your baby walk?

My son is 16 months old and started taking his first steps at 14 months. He can physically walk and will sometimes walk from kitchen to lounge and back again etc. But mainly he chooses to crawl. It's like he just prefers crawling. I'm not worried in the slightest but just curious to see if any other babies are the same?
Most people I've spoke to say they babies started walking and that was it, they were off!

Just before 12 months but he couldn't stand up independently until almost 15 months so everytime he fell over he'd have to crawl to the closest wall or piece of furniture to pull himself back up again. Most of my friends kids could stand up themselves before they could walk. They all follow their own timeline.

This is my 14m old- just literally about to walk independently but can't stand up without pulling on something- I can see it's going to be very frustrating for her.

Thanks everyone! So interesting to hear all your responses and looks like there really is a massive range.
Since I wrote this post my little one has taken off with walking and seems to be walking everywhere 🤣 he's just over 16 months x

Its typical, the moment you start to worry and talk to someone or ask questions about a developmental stage in your baby, they will hit it and embarrass you for asking Grin

Around the same age, probably between 16 and 17 months before he chose to actually walk all the time and could be taken outside to walk etc, before that he used to automatically crawl because he was so fast at it. I think he did crawl quite late

Okunevo · 11/05/2023 07:23

DS walked at 11 months after being ready for ages, so skipped the toddling stage, walked like he had always walked, running soon after. I have photos of him crawling at 19 months, nothing wrong with crawling too!

We have 3 under 3 and boy who is 2 he started walking 15 months didn't particularly crawl..one of the twins she walked from 12months didn't crawl much and her sister she is almost 14month and still alternates between crawl and walk..There all different same for talking all coming on very differently

@Natsku hahaha literally so true ! I wrote this post not so long ago and now he's walking around everywhere! Including outside

Not until 15 months. Started cruising around the furniture at about 8 months and I assumed they would be an early walker!

YukoandHiro · 13/05/2023 21:53

19 months

Aquamarine1029 · 13/05/2023 21:56

My first took his first steps on his first birthday. Took about a week until he was walking consistently.

My daughter was running at 8 months. She never crawled, and went from pulling herself up, cruising, and then quickly walking. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. An 8 month old has no business walking.

ICMB · 13/05/2023 22:13

My boy is 9 months and can barely pull to standing. The best he will do is kneel. My brother and I walked around 1, my brother slightly later.

coxesorangepippin · 13/05/2023 22:14

They were both 1

My DD is nearly 15m so I found this thread interesting. She is very confident walking/trying to run holding 1 of our fingers and can walk for long periods of time outside like this- up to 10mins or so. She constantly wants our hands to walk round the flat non-stop.
Sometimes when she is tired wants 2 hands- which I try to avoid as it hurts my back.
However independently she will walk between my partner and I (if we turn it in to a game) but only up to about 6/7 steps- her record is 10.
If I let go of her in a standing position she can stand for several seconds if distracted but normally drops straight to the floor.
She is a very fast crawler and also moves well in a sort of half crawl- 1 knee and 1 foot which means she can hold something in 1 hand while moving.
Can't yet get herself into standing without something/someone to pull up on.
It feels like it's more confidence to do it alone than can't do it as when holding our hand she is very steady and isn't really using us for balance even. I'm hoping she is confident enough to do it on her own soon as the constant walking around at home is exhausting and means I can't get anything done.

Sounds excatly like my little one, I can't believe he's not walking yet. Just wondering if your little one took off yet?

Cuwins · 17/06/2023 20:06

@Amsken
Yes she has. About 2 weeks after this I think she learnt how to get herself into standing in the middle of the floor and I think that was the trigger for her to start walk more herself. She can still be wobbly at times particularly when tired but I would now say she walks confidently inside and out, her main mode of transport is walking- the crawling has almost disappeared now.

I had the same thing, he wasn’t ‘off’ like I expected as soon as he’d learned to walk. He still would rather crawl and I started to be a bit self conscious of it in a way if we were out at things with other babies the same age and he would look like he couldn’t walk. Felt like I was lying when I was telling the health visitor he definitely could walk but just chose not to as well! I think it was 2 or 3 months after his first birthday that he just sort of did it a bit more then started a little fast walk/run and once he’d realised he could balance okay he would just walk all the time. Glad to hear you’re not worrying about it. I think it can seem like the biggest deal on earth in the moment but literally 2 months later and all my friends kids were all walking about and you’d never know who walked first, it makes no difference 😊

Amsken · 17/06/2023 23:15

@Cuwins that's fantastic to hear. Hopefully we'll be the same soon 🤞

Dd was 9 months & TBH it was a pain, she walked like she’d had 15 pints in Wetherspoons but once she’d learnt that was it - didn’t want to go in the pram or be carried. Going anywhere took forever because it was like chaperoning a very very small drunkard.

medicallycomplicated · 17/06/2023 23:59

13 months DD was

sjpkgp1 · 18/06/2023 00:28

It is so random. We always used to joke that they were a walker or a talker. My first (son) was 14 months (talked incessantly), my second (dau) 12 months (not a talker, even 20 months in) my third (dau)15 months (a talker) my last (son) used to do a really weird crawl with one leg out, at least 16 months and not a talker. Had others to talk for him I suppose.

caringcarer · 18/06/2023 01:03

DD 13 months.
DS1 13 1/2 month's.
DS2 9 months and running by 10 months.

swirly3468 · 18/06/2023 12:00

Just an update, my boy is 17 months now and practically running everywhere! He also loves to climb
