Period products for slightly-built girls

Hi, for reasons beyond anyone's control (please don't ask) I may not be around when my 11 year old starts her periods. It's probably best not left to her lovely Dad, so I am trying to get some kit in advance. I think I get that girls need to be a minimum weight before they start, but she is likely to still be very slender. She is nowhere near any physical signs of puberty at the moment. I am thinking of a variety of things she can try, including period pants but wonder if there are any small enough to fit - her waist is still about 21-22 inches and hasn't shifted much for years. Ideally simple stuff that she doesn't need to ask anyone about if she doesn't want to. I would of course try to talk her through it once I have the kit, but it might not make much sense to her at the moment. And any websites or other sources that she can turn to? We have already talked about the biology, and as I write this I am very aware of the many other topics around puberty I may need to think about as well - any thoughts on those? She is in some ways a young Y6 and so far is absolutely not interested in boys, make-up etc, still believing in the Scandi Big Fella in Red, bless her, which was just fine by me until I realised there's going to be some advance work to do when she probably isn't at all interested! Thanks so much - and Happy Easter. Apologies if I might not reply to any responses: it won't mean I'm not grateful but there's a lot going on at the moment.

Wuka period knickers are a god send, honestly worth there weight in gold.

my 12 year old just started hers last summer, and she’s been absolutely brilliant. No trouble at all. Has a little bag for them to take spares to school.

she hates anything that rubs or makes her feel uncomfortable so sanity towels are out the window.

the ones from marks and Spencer also works great. And primary are ok for light flow.

good luck

DD was very slight when she started her periods and liked the Teen fit from ModiBodi.

I also got her the Hey Girls Starter Kit as it has a bag to keep products and spare pants in.

A Mighty Girl has some great suggestions of books on maturing and puberty here.

I'm so sorry that you won't be able to be with your DD Flowers

Li-let's do a range of teenage sanitary products that are a smaller design, Superdrug def have them.

I would recommend these, the wrappings are nice, and get a funky purse or small bag for dd to keep them in in her school bag or if out at weekends etc.

Just be careful sharing details of your daughter

Demelzaza · 10/04/2023 19:08

I am normally very careful - thanks for the heads up. Are you suggesting I've said anything identifiable? I thought I just put the necessaries...

Sorry OP, I have reported as well. Unfortunately some people get kicks out of reading such things and asking people to share stories about their daughters and a BH Mon is prime time for such people.

Tbf I really hope you are a troll, because if you aren't it is a very sad situation that you are in.

Demelzaza · 10/04/2023 19:15

Thank you MRH - no I am not a troll. Please could you let me know how to contact Mumsnet HQ just in case? The replies I have had have been really helpful. How horrible to get a kick out of another family's sadness. I rarely post on here - or anywhere - and might be a bit naive.

@Demelzaza, this FB group may be useful to you, particularly the post about U10s from 1 April.

MaryJean87 · 10/04/2023 19:37

viques · 10/04/2023 19:39

OP, please find a female friend who your daughter can talk to when she needs to. It’s not just periods, it’s about finding a first bra, talking about body and underarm hair , spots, skin….all the joys of female puberty.

Skybluepinky · 10/04/2023 19:41

Lillets do teenage products, they also have videos showing how to use the products.
There are lots of period knickers available now too.

Demelzaza · 10/04/2023 19:43

Thanks yes, I have a couple of friends in mind

M&S do period pants, reasonably priced and starting from size 4. Sorry you are in this situation

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/04/2023 19:58

@Demelzaza I am sorry you are in this situation. It feels similar to that of a good friend of mine when her dd was also 11, and her ds 8. She did a lot of planning ahead too x

Qbish · 10/04/2023 20:05

You are an amazing mum. Maybe jot down some notes, or do some videos, about what you are thinking about, your concerns for their future, the things they will go through, so they can see that you were loving them and thinking of them?

Demelzaza · 10/04/2023 20:11

Thank you. I have an enormous to do list, need the right headspace to do the right things, then beat myself up about not having done enough. It's like the exam deadline from hell!

A friend of mine has a small make up bag in her work bag that she keeps everything in, so if her bag is ever open on the floor, people wouldn't think twice that it wasn't a make up bag, it's a fab idea!

Thinking of you 💐
