Yep. Mine splatted spectacularly onto the floor while i was putting my trousers on and sitting right next to him. Ended up calling NHS 24 for advice. He was fine - they all do it once, so that's another thing off the list...
Phone the nHS helpline for advice and to put your mind at rest though. Poor both of you!

ladette · 13/02/2008 19:48

Hi Bumbly, it's scarey isn't it but honestly, I think most babies have fallen from somewhere like that at some point, else down the stairs when they're a little older and more mobile. It doesn't make you a bad mother, just human. Don't ever worry about being paranoid - if you have any reason to think he's not himself, take him to the hospital. Hope you're feeling better too, a big shock for you. Been there!

bumbly · 13/02/2008 19:48

yes you like me were in the dame bloody room - hwo odl was yours?

Yes, DD1 fell off a cot top changer when she was 3 months old..she cried and so did I, but she was fine..
DD2 is now 8 months and rolled quite spectacularly off the bed this very morning (for the second time in a week )She actually launched herself and got some 'air' before landing! But she is ok..

You are not a bad Mum..it happens to most of us I think..Dont beat yourself up..

jellies · 13/02/2008 19:50

My second son fell off the couch at 4 weeks and the bed not once twice in the first 6 months! Never leave an intellegent man alone with a baby!
But I think its why he is the most fearless three year old I have ever met!

nickytwotimes · 13/02/2008 19:50

I think my ds was about 5 months. Felt like the world's worst Mum ever, but when I discussed it almost a year later with my baby group friends, it turns out that many of them have had the same experience and were alos too scared to say!

Clegg · 13/02/2008 19:51

When dd1 was about 4 months old, we were co sleeping and I found her face down on top of the pillow beside the bed doing wriggling around and trying to sort herself out in the middle of the night. I felt terrible at th time, but on reflection it was quite funny. Also both dc have fallen off the sofa, their only way of telling you they shouldn't be left there anymore.
Might be a bit concerned of your dc is still wimpering today........ if in doubt always get them checked out, just for peace of mind if nothing else.
Don't be hard on yourself though. Sure all will be fine.

TotalChaos · 13/02/2008 19:53

I doubt there are many mums on here who have nothing similar to report - I dropped DS out of moses basket from hip height to carpet when he was 6 weeks old. And he rolled off friend's sofa at about 4 or 5 months. Did you get anywhere with getting a ?French paed appointment?

PortAndLemon · 13/02/2008 19:55

I won't say they all do it, but IMO and IME most babies fall off the bed at some point. And we all feel like crap parents afterwards. You are now a proper mother and can join our club...

Lulumama · 13/02/2008 20:00

DD fell off our bed, she was a bit older, but vomited everywhere in shock, and gave us a terrible fright, NHS direct advised i went in every couple of hours in the night to give her a gentle wake up, and we took her to the GPs teh next day.. she was right as rain.

DS fell down an entire flight of stairs too and he was fine

if you are concerned, then take him back to be checked out, better to be safe than sorry

LIZS · 13/02/2008 20:00

Very very common. ds did it on our first Mother's Day at almost 1 onto carpet, dd was much younger and the floor was a hard one and the bed higher - feels like the end of the world but in the scheme of things it really isn't and they are far more robust than it appears. Your lo sounds fine , you may well be looking for symptoms which simply are not there.

AhhChewww · 13/02/2008 20:01

happend to my dd (8.5 months old )today as well...
felt like a crappiest mother in the world
she was sobbibg her little heart out for the first 10 min and then forgot about it and started to play

it's horrible isn't it

laura032004 · 13/02/2008 20:16

DS1 fell from a lowish sofa onto a pile of towels on a carpeted floor. I sobbed my heart out and rang my mum for advice. PFB.

One night I awoke to DS2 crying on the floor. He'd fallen out of our lowish bed onto the carpet, so I latched him on for a bf and went back to sleep. In the morning, realised that he had a massive bruise right up the middle of his forehead. He must have hit his head on the drawers in the fall. I hadn't even realised he was badly hurt. Poor second born!

Both were fine and had no ill effects (apart from DS2's bruise!). If your lo is otherwise well, and not unduly sleepy or anything, I wouldn't worry.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 13/02/2008 20:32

It happens to all of us at one point or another. Always of course when we least expect it. Dont worry

whomovedmychocolate · 13/02/2008 20:44

Oh god yes, DD rolled off the bed twice. She'd wake up screaming, I'd bring her into our bed and nurse her, fall asleep and then thwunk waaaaaaahhhhh. Never anything that couldn't be sorted with a bit of milk and a cuddle though.

You wait, it's when you unpack the car and put the shopping away then suddenly realise there is a (hopefully sleeping) child still in the car, that you feel really bad!

StealthPolarBear · 13/02/2008 20:47

yep, done it here too, probably he was about 3 or 4 months. He even hit his head on the bedside cabinet on the way down It's awful isn't it as you're then paranoid that everything shows there is something wrong, even if they're just being a bit grumpy!

TrinityRhino · 13/02/2008 20:58

all 3 of my girls have done this whilst co sleeping
just about around the 8 month mark when crawling was all they wanted to do

theheadgirl · 13/02/2008 21:34

Oh yes. DD2 fell out, and ROLLED UNDER THE BED!! I, being half asleep, looked down on the floor, couldn't see the babe and totally freaked out. To be honest, I think it affected me and DH more than DD2 who cried then settled and seemed fine. But 10 years later, I can STILL recall the thud, and then me looking for her, and not finding her. Please don't tell social service on me.....

Alambil · 13/02/2008 22:33

I woke up once when I heard a cry... baby was NOT next to me; took me about 1 minute to regain proper consciousness and realise he was on the floor!

DS was about 6 weeks old at the time - really small... He was fine though after a trip to A&E with ex repeatedly telling me I'd have nothing more to do with the baby yadda yadda... in fact, ex made the whole thing FAR more scary than it needed to be!

Babies bounce - he'll be fine

micegg · 13/02/2008 22:41

Yes. DD fell off the bed when she was about 6 months straight onto hard wooden floor. Shes now 2 and is fine!

LadyG · 13/02/2008 22:42

Mine's first ever roll at about 3 months..straight out of bed on to floor-fall broken by pile of Vogues luckily! Can laugh about it now but remember being completely distraught and staying up all night 'observing' him and shining a light into his eyes to check his pupil reflexes (am medical) every time he woke up for a feed-poor little sod.

yama · 13/02/2008 22:47

Sorry - haven't read all the other posts but my Mum tells me that I fell from the hospital weighing scales just after I was born (the doctor told my Mum I would be a genius).

Apparently I also rolled off her bed when I was a few weeks old. I suppose some babies just do that.

Please don't worry.

ladymariner · 13/02/2008 23:06

Oh you are definately not alone here. My ds rolled off the waist-high changing table on to the bedroom floor, i didn't even know he could roll at the time!!! I picked him up, ran down the stairs with him, ran back up again, he was crying, I was crying, made myself sit on my bed with him and calm down, he was fine. Took him to hospital for a check-up to be on the safe side, but no worries. Bloody scary though at the time!!

Poledra · 13/02/2008 23:18

Yes, both my dds have fallen off my high bed when less than 6 months old. Also once walked through a doorway and managed to hit my dd1's head off the frame (I still don't know how i DID IT). Children are now 4 and 2 and have no lasting ill-effects. We all do it - I was in the room with them and awake when they fell.
