yes, my daughter fell off the bed at about the same age. I'm sure we felt worse than they did.(or I hope so at least). She cried a bit then calmed down and she was fine. I put cushions down after that, just in case.

BitTiredNow · 13/02/2008 20:09

yup - my dd did a month ago, and I was in such a deep sleep, I didn't notice for about 10 mins - then had a v stern mother daughter chat about the need to CRY when she falls over!

LittleMy34 · 13/02/2008 20:09

our DS fell head first off a high bed and bumped his head on a chest of drawers on the way down a few months ago. big bruise, but nothing wrong with him except a fright, no problem.

as long as he is behaving normally and not sleepy or being sick or otherwise behaving weirdly, I'm sure he'll be fine.

[hastens to add] but I'm no doctor!

I found out that DS1 had learned to roll when I heard the 'THUMP..... WAAAAAAHHHHHHH' from upstairs.

I'm sure it happens to most of us...

needmorecoffee · 13/02/2008 20:12

yup. All mine have learned to roll by falling of the bed and as toddlers both my boys have plummeted down the stairs.
Generally they bounce.

dilbertina · 13/02/2008 20:14

umm yes. dd fell headfirst onto concrete floor in Bulgaria at 6mths. She was fine.

ds has fallen off bed 3 or 4 times

I remember how awful I felt when dd fell...must admit poor ds gets a quick cuddle and I don't actually feel too awful at all......

I do feel pretty bad if I manage to clonk them on the head as I open the car door....

Really, you're not a bad mum - or if you are so is virtually every mum on the planet.

Keep an eye on him, but they're really not generally that delicate.

MesaLoca · 13/02/2008 20:17

Oh yes, daddy rolled over, mummy rolled over... and baby fell onto wooden floor.Ouch. She must have been about 3 months old and I felt terrible. A cuddle and a feed fixed it though. He wont hold it against you!

Poppychick · 13/02/2008 20:19

Awww don't be so hard on yourself, they're tougher than you think. Give yourself a break, if he was broken you'd know about it!

Lizzer · 13/02/2008 20:20

This reminds me about my dd (7m at the time) and me were staying at my friend's house. When she woke from her nap me and my friend sat listening to her gurgling through the baby monitor. We sat for 5 mins saying,"ahh isn't she sweet" then THUMP."WAAHH!!!" Right off the bed, and i knew damn well she could roll...

She was fine and try not to worry,as NMC says, they do bounce. If he'd been sick and blacking out you have cause to worry but from what you say he'll been fine. A few extra cuddles should do it (for YOU, not him)

bekkaboo · 13/02/2008 20:21

god yeah, 6 half months aswell, it was one of them moments where you know they wil do it one day but not yet and then the thud ad cries! Jes was horrible but he was fine after, think i was worst! Mt mates DS threw himself of the bed about 9 times befre reached 1st birthday.. You think she would have learnt aye?!?!?

Habbibu · 13/02/2008 20:22

Oh bumbly, you poor love! Keep an eye on him, lots and lots of cuddles (for him and you - get DH in on the action). And you are a lovely lovely mum - do you hear me?!!

3Ddonut · 13/02/2008 20:25

my dd and my ds fell out of bed as small babies, I actually think that I pushed dd out of bed, she latched on during my sleep and I think, I thought, 'ow that hurts' and pushed her away! (I may not have of course) ds fell out of bed because he was sharing with us and dh suddenly sat up and shouted 'where's ds???' mad panic, I dived out of bed to find him and sent him plummeting to the floor. Grandma said 'I had 9 and none of mine ever fell out of bed' stern look!

Sycamoretree · 13/02/2008 20:36

I goodness, please DO NOT GIVE YOURSELF A HARD TIME. DD did this twice as a small baby. Now she is 2.6 and in the space of a week had fallen off (from sitting) her changing table AND the worksurfaces in the kitchen. Yes, it's awful when they wail and sob, and yes, you learn your lesson (no more sitting on the work-top whilst mummy makes her toast - doh!) but it's all just part and parcel of having kids. You are not a bad mum - I bed more than half the babes in the world have had a fall like this. The thud is sickening, but they get over it, and you'd be best advised to put it behind you and do the same. Have a swift, nifty G&T to get over the shock then get on with your day

chubbymummy · 13/02/2008 20:39

My ds fell from his changing table at a similar age. I was holding him steady (or so I thought) as I bent to grab a nappy from the shelf below and he picked that moment to sit up and toppled off the table onto the wooden floor. It was the first time he had managed to sit himself up from lying down so I just didn't see it coming. I scooped him up and rushed him to the doctors (at the end of the road luckily) and I could not be consolled, I felt awful! He was absaloutly fine but I felt like the worst mum in the world and cried for days afterwards. I got rid of the changing table quick smart I can tell you!

Flibbertyjibbet · 13/02/2008 20:39

Both mine fell off the bed a few times as babies. We also have a very high bed. its the shock that makes them cry not anything broken.
Don't worry about it.
Wait till you put ds in a bed of his own, we just got used to the 'thump' of ds1 falling out of bed several times a night till he got used to not having the cot side there!

lizziemun · 13/02/2008 20:48

All babies do this.

DD1 did this when daddy was looking after her at about 4mths.

Who's baby fell off the bed and rolled under it.

ChirpyGirl · 13/02/2008 21:04

I was sitting up in bed feeding DD1 when she was in teh middle of her 10 week growth spurt, fell asleep, started leaning sideways and dropped her headfirst off the bed.

She's fine but I am still using it as an excuse not to pick my clothes up from the floor as they make a nice soft landing spot.

suiledonn · 13/02/2008 21:11

My mother regularly tells the story of how, when I was a very small baby, I fell out of bed and rolled under the cot. She got a terrible fright when she woke up and realised I had disappeared. I lived to tell the tale. In fact I slept through the whole thing. And I didn't grow up to hold a grudge so don't worry. I'm sure ds will be fine.

MaureenMLove · 13/02/2008 21:12

Yep! Another one (or two or three ) here! She seems OK, but its hard to tell when they're 12. All they do is grunt at you!

sophiewd · 13/02/2008 21:13

Been there, done that and got the T short a few times

AitchTwoOh · 13/02/2008 21:17

gosh, dd fell off our bed onto the floorboards about 5 times, ALWAYS because i'd fallen back to sleep when i was supposed to be looking after her. dh used to get really cross...

you do put yourself under a lot of pressure to be perfect, don'tcha bumbly? none of this is relevant to how good a mum you are, it's just life, it's just what happens.

bumbly · 14/02/2008 13:23

yes it is the thump noise that is almost making me be ill thinking about it

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 14/02/2008 13:30

it's baaaaad, isn't it? kind of a 'cccrrrruuump'. ooh dh used to go crazy at me, it was always my fault...

Habbibu · 14/02/2008 13:46

My dad put his foot through the ceiling. Right over my sister's bed. While she was sleeping in it. Big chunks of plaster, the works. She slept right through it.

Bumbly, the sick feeling will fade...

AitchTwoOh · 14/02/2008 13:51

until the next time, mwah-hah-haaaah! because it will happen again, it will...
