Fruit juice for 8 month old

Happilynauseous · 20/03/2023 15:25

I have read that fruit juice can be introduced from 7+months once heavily diluted. What juices would be suitable? Do I need to juice my own fruit or for example I purchased a bottle of Heinz Squash today but realised it says for 1+yrs. Is it suitable for my 8month old DD if diluted? Any tips for a confused FTM would be appreciated

Don't bother. Stick to water. They don't need juice of any description at this age.

JavaChip · 20/03/2023 15:30

Don't.
Once they taste sweet drinks they won't want water.
Water or milk only.

SpideysMummy · 20/03/2023 15:31

A tiny bit of regular orange juice heavily diluted works well for constipation. Otherwise stick to water/milk.

No juice. Completely unnecessary. Water or milk to drink and lots of fruit to eat.

VivaVivaa · 20/03/2023 15:35

Stick to water only as long as possible. I have a squash addict of a 3 yo thanks to the odd bits here and there when out and about or at toddler group or with grandparents after he was 1. It’s such a battle getting him to drink water at home now.

tealandteal · 20/03/2023 15:35

Heavily diluted fruit juice means actual juice, diluted, rather than squash. However they don’t need it so stick to water and formula/breast milk.

Please don’t, a friend’s child had to had teeth removed because of juice/ squash

Wenfy · 20/03/2023 15:37

Only if you brush twice a day. We did so the dentist said we could give him anything we wanted. So my son has always had homemade cake and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 20/03/2023 15:38

I really wouldn’t. I gave DS (20 months) a sip of my juice the other day and he now behaves like an addict every time he sees it…..

2bazookas · 20/03/2023 15:40

Don't.

Just give water, much better for teeth and health and always available wherever you go.

toastofthetown · 20/03/2023 15:41

My dentist advises to eliminate fizzy/sugary drinks and foods or to only consume them with meals if you choose to have them, regardless of tooth brushing.

daimtheman · 20/03/2023 15:44

Another vote for nope. They don't need it and I would delay introducing sweet sugary drinks for as long as possible as it's terrible for their teeth.

Plus, once you start it can be a bastard to get them to drink plain water with some children.

DragonbornMum · 20/03/2023 16:30

Water is better. Once they taste juice you CANNOT convince them to have water again. Best to stick to water

Minimummonday · 20/03/2023 17:07

Brushing twice a day isn’t enough to negate sugary drinks with little kids. They have very thin enamel on their teeth and orange juice - especially fresh!- literally burns it off. It’s very acidic

jannier · 20/03/2023 17:21

Water or milk is best.
Squash isn't fruit juice it's just a man made chemical drink

Happilynauseous · 20/03/2023 17:38

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll persevere with the water! Shes BF and it's been difficult to get any water into her since weaning for some extra hydration as she's not fond of the bottle/sippy cup. Just shows don't believe every you read! Thanks a mil

Try a few different cups, my eldest also wasn’t keen on a sippy cup or bottle but got on quite well with a 360 cup.

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/03/2023 19:10

It's totally unnecessary. Stick to water or milk for as long as possible

TomatoSandwiches · 20/03/2023 19:13

Try a straw type bottle or 360 cup.

justmyluck1234 · 20/03/2023 19:17

I would say it should be okay if extremely diluted. Obv it's completely your choice but if he's happy and drinking lots of water and some milk I wouldn't even bother with the juice.

My little one is 15months and I still only offer him water or milk.

shakeitoffsis · 20/03/2023 19:18

Don't do it. My nearly 4 year old tried a fruit shoot recently because her friend had one and she's begging me for ages - she hated it!

She just loves ice cold water. Ideal.

BuffaloCauliflower · 20/03/2023 19:22

Try a straw cup. The Munchkin ones are good. And keep breastfeeding. Avoid introducing squash/juice as long as you can. Watermelon sticks are a good one for more hydration if baby isn’t a big drinker as well, but breastmilk will still provide the majority of hydration for a long while more.

LysHastighed · 20/03/2023 19:23

Wait until 3 or thereabouts for drinks other than water and milk. Mine can take juice or leave it, water is their default.
They don’t need much water as they get it from food and milk. You can also give it on a spoon or add it to food. Don’t give something other than water just because you think she’s not taking in enough liquid.

110APiccadilly · 20/03/2023 19:30

DD1 didn't like drinking water from a cup to start with. I gave her milk in the cup, then diluted the milk more and more at each meal, and she got the idea. Might be worth trying.

33goingon64 · 20/03/2023 20:36

Try a doidy cup
