MIL has said start 11 month old on cows milk

Just as the title says!

We were talking the other day about formula and how it keeps going up in price. Just a general conversation among talking about prices rising. My MIL then said stop formula and start cows milk. Which I replied "but we only have a month left on it till she turns one"

I've been thinking about it, not even starting my little girl on it because 4 weeks on formula till we do the cows milk isn't a huge amount of time. And it's not money either, we can more than afford it.

But I was curious, did anyone start their little ones early on cows milk? I was more concerned at the affects it could have before one year of age

I did, I figured they had a good diet anyway so wouldn’t miss the vitamins added to formula.

shakeitoffsis · 18/03/2023 08:02

Yeah I did. What difference will a matter of weeks make.

Fancysauce · 18/03/2023 08:02

At 11 months i would. There's no magic line at 12 months that means normal milk is suddenly ok but it wasnt the day before.

@Funnyfive that's exactly what I was thinking. My little girl eats well, lots of fruit and veg. She's never been a large ounce drinker. We do 7oz in the morning, 2 5oz bottles during the day and 7oz before bed. But she eats 3 meals a day, snacks. I do a multivitamin in her breakfast also

Okay ladies, this has surprised me. I thought people would be outraged at this😂

Yeah I did

feelinglikeanewparent · 18/03/2023 08:04

I'd keep in mind she may not like the taste at first. Mine didn't and I had to slowly mix it into his formula, increasing by an oz at a time until he was fully on cow's milk

Shannon9955 · 18/03/2023 08:06

@feelinglikeanewparent that was my next question, how do you introduce it? So do I keep giving her formula and then one bottle cows milk?

DD1 moved from formula to soya milk at 11 months but this was under the guidance of a paediatric dietitian who had analysed her diet.

I know of someone who has done this with all her children around 9 months, generally they don’t have a good diet and the children are shorter than I would expect considering the height of their parents.

As a grandparent I hate the 'in my day' rhetoric and 'it never did me any harm' but it is a fact that when my DC were small the guidance was six months for cows milk. I'm definitely not advocating that, but I don't think one month will be critical.

Twiglets1 · 18/03/2023 08:09

I did yes with both of mine - this was about 25 years ago though and the guidelines were probably different. Just do what you think best.

DragonbornMum · 18/03/2023 08:10

Yep, I started giving mine a drink of cow's milk in the morning at 11 months. He was having it in his porridge anyway!

His 1 year review happened at that time and I told my health visitor. She said "totally fine".

Dacadactyl · 18/03/2023 08:11

Yeah, it was well before 12 months but can't remember exactly when cos she's 16 now.

ShandaLear · 18/03/2023 08:11

At this stage your DD will have a pretty varied diet and be getting all the nutrients she needs - she’s likely already eating milk products such as cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais, etc. so it’s really not going to make much of a difference.

RedRobin100 · 18/03/2023 08:12

I’d say she’d be fine yes. 52 weeks is just a number not miles away from 48

my boy is 10.5m and I’ll probs start giving him milk now during day

BritishDesiGirl · 18/03/2023 08:14

I did with mine. I found my daughter transitioned from formula to cows milk much more easily.

Shannon9955 · 18/03/2023 08:06

@feelinglikeanewparent that was my next question, how do you introduce it? So do I keep giving her formula and then one bottle cows milk?

I introduced it slowly with his formula. 1:4 ratio then increased over few days.

You'll be fine!

Kranke · 18/03/2023 08:15

I never used breast or formula milk in porridge, so they were used to the taste from 6m. I think I started giving them a cup of cows milk around 11m and moved solely onto that.

teachingbean · 18/03/2023 08:16

As in - I mixed it with the formula. Again, guidelines at time!

mummy3today · 18/03/2023 08:16

So do I keep giving her formula and then one bottle cows milk?

You can try this but it might not work. You might have to mix formula and cow's milk in the same bottle, so make a 5oz bottle of formula and then add 1oz of cow's milk. Gradually switch the ratio until it's just cow's milk. I switched cold turkey but I know lots of parents whose little ones refused to drink it and had to do the mixing method.

Think we switched about 11.5 months as I finished a tub of formula and didn't realise I didn't have another one in the cupboard so gave cow's milk for the next bottle and when he happily drank it it didn't seem worth buying formula for the last 2 weeks before his birthday

NotMyDayJob · 18/03/2023 08:17

I did because I had been breastfeeding and my baby started nursery at 11 months. I wasn't going to express and didn't see the point of giving her formula for nursery for the sake of a month

Blinkingmarvellous · 18/03/2023 08:17

Mine preferred cows milk. Just needs to be full fat.

Twiglets1 · 18/03/2023 08:19

I introduced cows milk at a certain point in a beaker cup as I was breastfeeding and the sight of a bottle made mine angry for some reason. Combined breastfeeding with milk in a beaker for a few weeks then stopped the breastfeeding completely.

smellyflowers · 18/03/2023 08:19

I used formula and then had to introduce milk slowly. The milk wasn't as cheap as I'd thought as LO got through loooooads

Ragwort · 18/03/2023 08:20

I just went from breast feeding to cow's milk ... maybe the guidelines were different then? Don't forget the sale of formula is a huge marketing business ... as is anything baby/child related designed to guilt parents ...
