Autistic toddler!

Sumy · 17/03/2023 17:38

My son is 2.7 years and I have just found out he is autistic, typical symptoms, no pointing, waving, flapping arms, no speech and understanding. Plays with wheels of toys and runs from other children. I don’t know how to deal with this. I’m finding it hard to accept, can anyone with a toddler with similar symptoms give me some positive stories please.
posyituvity: he is a lovely smiley, cheeky little boy, great eating and sleeping. Loves going for drives as he is fixated on vechicles, very mischievous, blabbers, if it wasn’t for delayed speech and not following instructions we wouldn’t have figured it out.
emotional mum!

My son was diagnosed at 2. He is 4 now. It is challenging at times I won't deny it, but there are also so many beautiful moments. Read up as much as you can on autism and try to find autism mum friends would be my advice. 🙏

My son was diagnosed around the same age. He is 11 now and he is the absolute bomb. Not great at making friends but an absolutely superb human. Luffs him so very much.

I can recommend Ausome Trainers. They are Autistic people who do online courses. One is about parenting your Autistic child and will hopefully help you move forward with some more purpose, hope and positivity. It did for me.
Also, try and find an Occupational Therapist trained in Sensory Integration. Has made an immeasurable difference to my sons life.

Sounds like my son. He is in his late 20s now, drives, works, owns his flat, is lovely. Life hasn't been plain sailing particularly re school but nevertheless he is wonderful.

I'd get the book More Than Words and start trying to use some of the ideas they talk about.

Not to disturb you, when my son was like this (possibly a lot worse as he didn't sleep or eat either), what I did was, I looked up what happened to older autistic children, severe - non speaking etc. I decided, no, this isn't a life - I can give him better.

Rather than having a non speaking adult child who ultimately would be cared for, forever, I found a functional medicine doctor, we tested, we treated, we uncovered the underlying causes of the symptoms. You will get told to not do this though.

There's plenty of us around.

There is no cure for Autism. You can't take a treatment that snaps into a child who can speak....but some children often do learn to speak in time .....of course lots of people make money from curing all sorts of things Autism, cancer, paralysis.

It's pseudoscience quackery horseshit.

thesilentwaveblog.wordpress.com/2016/05/13/functional-medicine-and-aspergersautism-a-rant-and-a-possible-solution/

It works on getting parents to pay to 'cure' their child's autism by claiming that asd and adhd are caused by imbalances in the body.

Another good reputable person to follow is Gina Davies of The Gina Davies Autism Centre.
She was the lady who started Attention Autism and Bucket time.
She's an amazing speaker and trainer who has good advice on all areas of Autism and issues you may need help with.

My son started showing symptoms at about that age which were fortunately picked up by my very on the ball HV who organised an immediate referral . He was diagnosed at 3. It's been challenging. A learning curve. I did a lot of courses. I adapted to him. Last year he was diagnosed with combined type ADHD in addition. He has just turned 12 and with a lot of support is a beautiful soul. Of course we have a lot of difficulties and always will with various things but I am far less fearful of the future than I was a few years ago.

Yes! I did this course and it was wonderful and so helpful and I've made friends for life through it.

My DS is 5 and just diagnosed yesterday (though it was a formality, rather than a shock). He will also get an ADHD diagnosis at 6. He is demand avoidant. The S&L therapist yesterday said his ASD, ADHD, demand avoidance and his personality is creating a perfect storm. I’m utterly sinking under it all and don’t know where to turn.

sorry, I have no advice for you but just so you’re not alone

Seriously, take this shit and go away. Autism is a neurological disorder, it's not curable. It's a born with condition. My God your poor child.

I would still suggest trying an OT trained in sensory integration if you can. My sons sensory issues werent really significant. But the theory is (i think, no expert) that the underlying sensory system had to be sorted before the higher cognitive stuff like language can come. That was certainly true for my son, years of speech therapy made minimal progress but after OT i cant get a moments peace from all the talking. And i love it.

My daughter is 4 and diagnosed a few months ago . At 2.7 like your son she had no words no pointing etc. However now she can hold a very basic conversation. She can ask for what she wants (which has massively reduced the tantrums and self harming) and she can express likes and dislikes.
We started speech therapy around 2 and literally spent 3 months with not one word in each session. I attended courses on the Hanen program and used their techniques at home She then spent a year with her therapist working on Attention Autism practices and this progressed to single words and now she is working on sentences and inferences pronouns etc.

Like you son she is a great sleeper ans eater (although now her favorite sentence is I don't like that anymore!) When she was your son's age I was so down and negative but now she attends a mainstream preschool and it has been recommended that she starts in a mainstream school (with a view to changing if necessary) .

I know this is not the path for every child but I really understand how sometimes positive stories can help you when you are at your lowest
