When do ebf babies poo less? Having problems with nappy rash

Ds2 is 7 weeks old tomorrow and is exclusively breastfed. I've read around 6 weeks they can go from pooing loads to once every day / two days / ten days 😅

It hasn't happened for us yet. He does a few big ones over the course of 24 hours but it feels like every 30-60 minutes he's letting out wet pumps which leave a small tiny amount but enough to cause him pain as he has bad nappy rash.
I'm hoping when he starts going less, the nappy rash will get better. It's been coming and going since he was born. Midwife ruled out thrush and we're currently waiting on the results of a stool sample to see if his gut is ok. In the meantime, we're doing nappy free time, lots of sudocrem, cotton wool and warm water, dabbing not wiping and changing very frequently.
At a loss really what else to do. So I'm hoping he'll just start pooing less and that'll do the trick 😞

Water wipes are more pure than cotton wool & water, so try those. My daughter had a bad rash but they really helped, along with the sudocrem.
My EBF baby went from pooping everyday to only pooping around once a week. I thought she was constipated at first but it was because breast milk provides perfect nutrition, so there is hardly any waste to poo out.

OooohAhhhh · 15/03/2023 19:30

Forgot to mention this was from around the 8-9 week mark.

Vertexmumma · 15/03/2023 19:33

My DD (2 months) is EBH and poo's constantly. She also suffers with terrible nappy rash since she was a couple of days old. Recently, she has been treated for Thrush and a bacterial infection at A&E - though they werent sure which one was the problem. She's just been put on steroid cream to help with the nappy rash, now the infection/thrush has cleared up.

Sorry no help, but can definitely sympathise with you!

Sudocream is useless....you need yellow metanium. Only a thin layer needed but it is miraculous stuff.

Santaslittlehelper83 · 15/03/2023 19:38

Oh and my ebf baby had always pooped 2-3 times per day. Only recently (nearly 6mo) is is usually once a day. But she has CMPA and I suspect may have other sensitivities.

User0ne · 15/03/2023 19:38

Get yourself some reusable wipes- you just wet them with warm water and then use them. You can get waterproof carry bags for them when you're out and about.

They're great for stopping nappy rash (which all 3 of my DC would get after a couple of days using disposable wipes of which we tried many)

OooohAhhhh · 15/03/2023 19:39

@Santaslittlehelper83 I have heard good things about that actually, I got recommended it but didn't need it in the end.

piperatthegates · 15/03/2023 19:39

Another vote here for Metanium, way better than sudocrem.

Changeforachange · 15/03/2023 19:40

Just checking - are you taking any supplements?
I took magnesium for Reynard's nipples & ended up giving my poor baby awful nappy rash.

Led9519 · 15/03/2023 19:41

I’d second Metanium cream, so much better at creating a barrier than sudocream.

if you want to go one better this stuff is the nuclear option;

We had this exact same problem and it got better around 8/9 weeks just when I was starting to worry about allergies etc but it wasn't anything and just suddenly stopped. As soon as he stopped doing constant small poos the rash stopped too.

We managed to keep the worst if the rash at bay with yellow metanium (thin layer) and bepanthen (generously applied on top of the metanium) until the pooing got better. Good luck.

Doowop1919 · 15/03/2023 19:53

@OooohAhhhh I could give them a try, thank you. And fingers crossed my little one will see a decrease in stools in the next few weeks then 🤞🏼

@Vertexmumma it's awful isn't it? I'm glad your little girl has a solution and hopefully it'll stay away 🤞🏼 does she also poop out tiny little amounts? I feel like all I've done today is change nappies because of it.

@Santaslittlehelper83 thanks for the recommendation. I'll give that a try, especially with everyone else recommending it here. My first had cmpa so I understand. I gave up dairy at 37 weeks pregnant this time round and I'm hoping he doesn't have any other sensitivities.

@Changeforachange I actually do take magnesium, I've taken it for 8 years. I also take iodine but that's it. We had a few weeks without nappy rash so I'm bit sure it could be that as I take magnesium everyday? I'll keep it in mind though thank you!

@lifechanginglemoncake oh that's great to hear, thank you! I really hope this is the case for us. I'm fed up for DS with all the tiny poos hurting his bum. He just seems in so much pain with it

My EBF baby always pooed a lot. Still does as a toddler. I would recommend reusable wipes with water, and bepanthen cream. Good luck!

Doowop1919 · 15/03/2023 19:56

@User0ne I'll have a look at these thanks, can you recommend any?

@Doowop1919 it's absolutely horrendous! I can't imagine how much pain they are in with it.

So far, we've tried metanium, sudocreme, sudosalve, bepanthen and burts bees nappy ointment. Let alone the prescribed creams.

She does poo lots and varying amounts through the day, frequently little ones though, and all I seem to do is change nappies. She's not keen on nappy free time either!

From reading everyone's responses, they should sort themselves out soon enough and then the nappy rash should resolve itself. So fingers crossed for us 🤞🏻 and good luck!! 💜

Both mine were EBF, first went to popping once a week (on a Thursday 🤣), second went everyday. Which was a disappointing change. Lol.

kirsty2023 · 15/03/2023 20:00

Best for nappy rash

Babyenroute · 15/03/2023 20:03

My EBF baby is 5 months and now poos around three times a day (up from around 8). It changed at around 2 months from memory. We used coconut oil on cotton wool when he looked sensitive and the yellow metainium is a miracle worker.

3ormorecharacters · 15/03/2023 20:03

Have you tried different brands of nappies? Mine has expensive taste - gets awful nappy rash with cheap nappies, only Pampers will do 😭

VeryLowTum · 15/03/2023 20:03

Mine is nearly 6 months and EBF and still poos about five times a day. Some EBF babies don't poo often but it's not guaranteed!

Best cream is the Weleda calendula one.

The notion that 'breast milk contains little to no waste and thus it's normal not to pass a bowel motion for up to ten days' is not just a myth, but inaccurate. It's not "normal" (despite however common) for anyone to not be passing a bowel motion at the very least, once every two days.

Not a suggestion for you I'm afraid OP, just (one of many) common misconceptions that float about which are in no one's benefit believing.

You definitely need the yellow Metanium. It works miracles and stops them from being sore so much quicker that Sudocrem. It's on a different level. .
