When do ebf babies poo less? Having problems with nappy rash

Ds2 is 7 weeks old tomorrow and is exclusively breastfed. I've read around 6 weeks they can go from pooing loads to once every day / two days / ten days 😅

It hasn't happened for us yet. He does a few big ones over the course of 24 hours but it feels like every 30-60 minutes he's letting out wet pumps which leave a small tiny amount but enough to cause him pain as he has bad nappy rash.
I'm hoping when he starts going less, the nappy rash will get better. It's been coming and going since he was born. Midwife ruled out thrush and we're currently waiting on the results of a stool sample to see if his gut is ok. In the meantime, we're doing nappy free time, lots of sudocrem, cotton wool and warm water, dabbing not wiping and changing very frequently.
At a loss really what else to do. So I'm hoping he'll just start pooing less and that'll do the trick 😞

@Doowop1919 Mine was exactly the same OP!! I agree with all the other recommendations for Metanium. The thing that actually helped us was changing nappy brand! We tried loads and eventually changed to Pampers and within a few days the nappy rash was gone! The only time we’ve had any issue with nappy rash since was when DS picked up a nasty sickness bug (and DS is now 2.5)
The number of dirty nappies didn’t really reduce until he started on solids.

DD's rash got worse with the yellow cream, I think she may have been allergic to it, however bepanthen covered with Vaseline worked wonders.

DragonbornMum · 15/03/2023 20:44

My ebf baby continued pooping 3-6 times a day on average 😝 It doesn't always slow to once a week!!!

Lots of warm water on the rash to keep it clean, and slather on your cream of choice

Have you tried washable nappies? No chemicals in them like disposables which your dc might be sensitive to. If you use a fleece or cotton liner in the nappy and there’s only a tiny bit of poo you can just change the liner rather than the whole nappy. Both my dcs were in washables and on the occasions we used disposables they’d look a bit sore. Super cute designs too.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to hunt for metanium tomorrow (I live in Germany and so far have only seen a blue version after a quick Google. All my family have already visited, mum is here now and she's the last for a while so I can't ask anyone to bring some over either😅).

Re the nappies. So far we've used a mix so I can't say for sure if it's the nappies or a coincidence but he had less nappy rash in the pampers baby dry ones so I'll get them tomorrw and see if it's the nappies.

My youngest was like this- tiny poos almost constantly. It went away by itself by about 8/9weeka.

What helped most was not using water to wipe her but coconut oil and a cotton make up pad. This cleaned it beautifully and was so much gentler than water which caused more trauma on the skin each time.

I never got on with metanium but found bepanthen better.

Mumma · 16/03/2023 04:07

We had this! Ds is now 8 weeks and its slowing down.

The only thing that touches it is metanium! Its the yellow cream! We got it from amazon as all stores were sold out when we tried to get it. You use it very sparingly but its magic! 3 days and it was gone!

Doowop1919 · 16/03/2023 05:37

Can't seem to find any yellow metanium on the German market. Bepanthen and Weleda is available though so will try one of those for now.
I'm going to get Pampers today and either try the coconut oil or I've also read about strong camomile tea and cleaning with that.

@babysoupdragon2 and @Mumma oh this sounds promising. Really hoping it does slow down for us too then in the next few weeks!

Oh also, I find cotton wool and water rubbish. I much prefer proper wipes so you don't have to apply any pressure to get poo off.

Mumsanetta · 16/03/2023 08:20

Another vote for yellow metanium and changing nappy brand. Vaseline can also help with nappy rash.

Yellow metanium is available on Amazon UK. Have you got any friends in the UK who can order for you and have it delivered to you? Sorry but the alternatives you have mentioned are not as effective. Better off trying a nice thick layer of Vaseline if you really can’t get hold of metanium.

Another vote for reusable wipes. We had some issues with a bit of nappy rash before we transitioned to reusables. With reusable nappies you can't use any creams so we were worried it would be an issue but it's all cleared up. We use cheeky wipes and got these little tablets that you can dissolve in the water. I'm not sure if they made the difference but the nappy rash cleared up! We also got some wipes to keep dry and will use them to pat her dry after.

My DS literally pooed every 10 minute when he was a newborn. We tried every nappy rash cream in Boots, included Metanium.

Nothing helped and the GP described his nappy rash as looking like chemical burns.

We ended up at the children's hospital, they prescribed Orabase which is a complete barrier cream and it saved his bum.

Also his poo samples showed lactose intolerance - they said due to an "immature gut" and to keep breastfeeding and he would grow out of it. He did eventually but think it was more around the 4 month mark.

Lightninginabox · 16/03/2023 08:27

Also here for the metanium love! Surely someone would take an Amazon delivery then relabel the package and send to Germany? Also one tube will last a longggggg time.

My ginormous guzzling baby did in fact do the no poo-ing ebf thing. It was great.

wishuponastar1988 · 16/03/2023 08:27

My friend who is a NICU nurse recommended aqueous cream (from boots) with cotton wool to wash/wipe down baby during Nappy changes and advised to avoid wipes/water. Really helped us for.

My EBF still pooed regularly - sometimes 5 times a day. It's reduced now she's older though

TomeTome · 16/03/2023 08:33

A cloth wipe or cotton wool with water, no sudocrem (all of mine reacted badly) dry if possible with a towel and leave the nappy off for much of the day. Cloth nappies are MUCH less reactive.

You might whipping up the white of an egg and applying it to his bottom. Instant relief from the heat of the rash and the egg white dries and forms a seal on the skin.

Doowop1919 · 16/03/2023 09:14

Amazon.co.uk won't ship it to Germany, due to Brexit it's difficult and expensive to get things from the UK now so I just don't order things anymore. But for this, I'm going to ask a family member to send some over and I'll just pay the postage and customs.
Luckily, it's calmed down today, still red but not as bright so he's been more comfortable and we've been having lots of smiles. Still going to change nappy brand though and keep treating it of course.
I'm honestly hoping his stool sample comes back with something so we can then treat it

My dc are late teens now, both ebf as babies and both poo'd 10+ times a day until weaning.

I second metonium ointment - that and lanisoh are the only recommendations I make to new parents
