We've fed, winded, changed... but DS (9 weeks) is just so unhappy and has been so since thursday. He's never been easy - always been a terrible sleeper (only sleeps when laying onone of us, we have to sleep in shifts) and while DW is trying to bf, he's not been latching on. Any ideas. He had been much happier the week or so before this, even flashing the odd wonderful smile.

I'm thinking maybe it's colic, but it's a long time since mine were babies.

Can you talk to your Health Visitor?

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 10/02/2008 16:54

I think the answer is probably that he's a nine week old baby. There is no rhyme or reason to them sometimes. Does he seem in pain or curling his legs up - could be colic but there's not much you can do even if it is . You could try giving him gripe water (in case it is wind) that worked for dd - check with the pharmacist that he is ok to have it. Sorry can't offer any other sensible suggestions. Hope he feels happier soon.

fletchaaarr · 10/02/2008 16:54

Oh it is horrid when they are so little and not well. My DD was like this, though when she was a bit older, and it turned out she had an ear infection. She didn't do any of the usual things like grabbing her ear so there was no hint as to what was causing the upset.

I would see a GP soon as.

(not saying it is ear infection for your DS but it sounds as though something is distressing him, and not wanting to eat is not a good sign)

You must be shattered! My ds1 was like this and i found him better i got him in a feeding/sleeping routine. He was never a totally happy baby though - he's much happier now as a 5 yo! Hope things get better for you soon.

fletchaaarr · 10/02/2008 16:55

How long has he been not wanting to eat?

Gimli · 10/02/2008 16:56

That's an idea. He's had terrible colic, but that did seem to improve. He hasn't been putting his legs up towards his stomach tho, which was usually the sign. We wonder if he's over tired, but we just can't get him to sleep. The car works... But sleep deprived and I'm very nervous about driving him in that state....

Not so much that he doesn't want to eat - he'll take a bottle. Always found bf hard, although better since tongue tie. When he's has unhappy as this he just won't latch and we have to use bottle, regretably.

Been checked for thrush ? Can your dw try a different position to feed, maybe more upright. If he hasn't fed properly ina whlil can she express and cup/bottle feed and meantime call one of the bf helplines. Sometimes they just do this though, sorry, yet all is well enxt day.

Gimli · 10/02/2008 17:00

sry, i meant since toungue tie removed

Is he breathing faster? Any cough?

Gimli · 10/02/2008 17:05

No, he's a bit snuffley but then he's always been a bit snuffley

If his nose is blocked, feeding will be difficult. Perhaps saline nose drops would help to clear it? It is impossible to suck and swallow with a blocked up nose. Just a thought.

Are you worried about dehydration? You need to check whether he is having wet nappies and whether his urine is concentrated .

I agree that ear infection is a possibility. Is his temperature normal?

Gimli · 10/02/2008 17:13

Gd thought. Will try hv/gp if no better tomorrow. Nappies would suggest not dehydrated.

If it is an ear infection he will be much more comfortable in an upright position. Babies with ear infection have much more pain when they are horizontal because the pressure in the ear increases.

If he is a snuffly baby he will be more uncomfortable lying flat, and that may be why he is a bad sleeper.

Just trying to come up with suggestions that might ring a bell.

Gimli · 10/02/2008 17:16

That's actually a very good thought. He doesn't much like being flat.

Have you tried Dr Browns bottles when he is being bottle fed? We found ds was much, much happier and less windy with those. I've got a few knocking around in a drawer if you want me to post them to you.

3littlefrogs · 10/02/2008 17:22

You might just have to take turns propped up in bed with him asleep on your chest. If you are propped up on 4 pillows - one flat, 2 in an upside down V shape, one more across the top, baby on chest, and pillow wedged each side of you so you can't roll over, you might get a few hours. Try putting the radio on low - it can sound a bit like a car engine.

3littlefrogs · 10/02/2008 17:33

I am in north london - if you are near me you can bring him to me for a bit - I love babies and mine are all grown up now

Gimli · 10/02/2008 18:11

DANCESwithaMuffineTop - that would be really nice. My dw (who posts as Kauto) says she will get in touch because she has the contact thing she tells me has to be paid for.

3littefrogs - we bascially sleep that way every night!

Great. Otherwise she or you can email me on [email protected] but let me know on here if you do as I never remember to check it!

3littlefrogs · 10/02/2008 18:15

Hang in there - it does get better. All this eating and sleeping and getting used to life outside the womb can be tough. I hope things improve. Is there anyone who could take over for a few hours so you can sleep? (Seriously - my neighbours always ask me to help with their los - I used to be a HV (years ago), bt have 3 dcs, so been there and done that).

Hi Danceswithamuffintop I've sent you a message via contact a mumsnetter.

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 10/02/2008 20:16

Fab. It's not through yet but I'll keep an eye out. If it comes through tonight I can try and get the bottles out to you tomorrow as I have to go to the post office anyway

Gimli · 10/02/2008 21:10

Me again. Many thanks. DS went out in his pram earlier and he has been sleeping soundly in his carrycot for nigh on four hours. This is unprecedented and we desperately needed the break, but slightly scary because he's never this quiet. DW now gone to bed for some much needed sleep. Hoping he at least sleeps until lost is over!
