So there's a debate at the moment, what do yous think? Is 80mph too fast to be driving a car on a main road with 3 young children in the back? Then when asked to slow down is it ok for the driver to get annoyed. All feedback welcome 😊

What is the speed limit on the road and what are the road conditions?

MrsMitford3 · 26/02/2023 18:16

When you say a main road do you mean a motorway?
What is the legal speed limit on the road?
Are you in the UK?

BigglyBee · 26/02/2023 18:16

Never okay to drive at 80mph in the UK. Doubly not okay with young children.

Given that maximum speed limit in England is 70mph this seems like a pretty simple debate.

watcherintherye · 26/02/2023 18:20

Driving at 80mph on a main road in the UK is an offence, as it is over the speed limit. Hth.

GoodChat · 26/02/2023 18:22

Well yes excessive speeds are too fast to be driving with children in the car at any time. There are speed limits for a reason.

HyggeTygge · 26/02/2023 18:27

It's dangerous and illegal - unless, of course, you are one of the very special majority that knows so much about driving that you're certain the rules don't apply to you because you know better.

trashcansinatra · 26/02/2023 18:35

Yes, too fast. Speed limits are there for a reason. Too fast whether or not kids are in the car but if there is an accident (and whether it's the driver's fault or not) the probability of death or more serious injuries is much higher than at lower speeds.

NoSquirrels · 26/02/2023 18:36

When you say ‘main road’ do you mean motorway?

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 26/02/2023 18:36

Motorway fine, other road no.

TwigTheWonderKid · 26/02/2023 18:38

Illegal, irresponsible and immoral.

Though I'd also like to add that they, and you, need to think past the fact their own children are in the car and remember that everyone else driving on the road or walking next to it also has a right to be considered and protected from such dangerous and selfish behaviour.

Dotcheck · 26/02/2023 18:40

It really isn’t ok. It increases stopping distances by (iirc) 8 meters. From the time brakes are applied.
Is that a chance you want to take with your children?

TalkToTheHand123 · 26/02/2023 18:40

Is the driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs?

Lcb123 · 26/02/2023 18:42

No that’s awful. 70mph is speed limit in Uk. I cant stand speeding, kids or not

IsItBedtimeYetNope · 26/02/2023 18:44

No it's illegal. The roads are not engineered for higher speeds in the UK.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 26/02/2023 18:36

How is it fine? The speed limit on a motorway is 70mph.

Imo it is, most people do 80 on the motorway, so if the car is keeping up with traffic and being driven safely then i don't see an issue with 80mph on motorways

ShowOfHands · 26/02/2023 18:48

What about other people's children as well? You aren't just responsible for your own. What about the person who swerves to miss you when you can't manage a bend in your own lane?

No it's never appropriate to speed. Although wait for the oh but everybody does it and there are worse things, what about being distracted or going too slow and what about me, I used to be a doctor so I'm allowed to speed to save lives. Every. Time.

wineandsunshine · 26/02/2023 18:49

No it's not fine.

Imagine a blow out at that speed. Imagine anything happening at that speed.

Emmamoo89 · 26/02/2023 18:50

No it's not okay

Hostofgoldendaffodils · 26/02/2023 18:50

That's illegal

DuckDuckDiva · 26/02/2023 18:55

The UK has some of the safest roads in the world and our strict highway code is the reason for that. Never ok to do 80mph. If someone is in the car on their own and chooses to do this then that's their choice and only the police can stop them, but still very wrong to do so. If someone else is in the car and is uncomfortable with it they have every right to raise it and the driver should slow down. If there are children in the car the driver is choosing to increase their risk of death or serious injury if they have an accident, not to mention the harm they could cause to other road users. The difference between a crash at 80 and a crash at 70 is much more than you'd think.

watcherintherye · 26/02/2023 18:55

So, is there tacit agreement from the police for this? Would be useful to know, if no-one ever gets done for driving at 80! I didn’t realise.

MintJulia · 26/02/2023 18:55

Depends on road conditions / visibility, speed limit and type of road.

And the condition of the car/bike.

HolyZarquonsSingingSeals · 26/02/2023 18:57

The answers are 1) yes b) no and c) it is not safe to let this person drive your children anywhere.
