So there's a debate at the moment, what do yous think? Is 80mph too fast to be driving a car on a main road with 3 young children in the back? Then when asked to slow down is it ok for the driver to get annoyed. All feedback welcome 😊

So basically the limit is 70 so I presume because you are asking it is not you who was driving this fast?

So, is there tacit agreement from the police for this? Would be useful to know, if no-one ever gets done for driving at 80! I didn’t realise.

Obviously not 😅 but if you drive on a motorway you will see a lot of drivers driving above 70, yes its illegal, doesn't stop people doing it, and i personally don't see why our motorway speed limit is still 70.

Unless you are one of those MN posters who has never ever broken the law, most people speed at some point

So may rule abiders here😂. Speed limits are always being debated from both a scientifc and political perspective. Increasing the motorway limit to 80 has been recognised as making sense with regard to traffic flow with minimal increased risk. although politically not going to happen to due increased pollution. From a safety perspective though, 80 on a motorway or dual carriageway isn't really an issue.

Increasing the speed of driving increases the risk of accident and the severity of that accident. Obviously this is fine to many people because many people singularly do not understand the concept of risk.

MinistryMelody · 26/02/2023 20:13

If your eyes are glued to the speedo making sure you don't go even 1mph over 70, then I'd argue that is far more dangerous than just moving along normally with the rest of the traffic and keeping your distance from the car in front, and being aware of the cars behind and to the side of you. If while doing that your speed fluctuates between 70-75 and perhaps even occasionally touches 80, then I can't really see a big problem. As long as you occasionally glance down at the speedo and aim to be travelling at approx 70, it's not a disaster to go a bit over. This is the real world.

Possibly. And under the same conditions, doing 80mph carries a higher risk of accident.
It's not 'a disaster' to go over 70, because that's not what 'an increase in risk' means.

If "the rest of the traffic" travels at 80 consistently then the people wishing to overtake will need to go even faster. And the idiots weaving in and out of lanes will too.

LizzieSiddal · 26/02/2023 20:27

This is not safe and I wouldn’t let anyone who drove in such a way, to be driving my children about.

Oh no no it wasn't me, it's people we know, it started a discussion in our home this evening. Personally I think it's atrocious to put kids & others lives at risk.

Fine on motorway. 70 was introduced decades ago when cars were very different, it's 80 all over Europe. Other roads, no you can't drive 80. Not sure how relevant kids in the car is.
