When did you know it was time to remove sides off cot bed?

DS was about 20 months and climbed out face first. We took the sides off that day. He actually slept better in the toddler bed after the first night (which was rough). We put a baby gate on his bedroom door so he couldn't leave his room, which is still there at 2y9m.

DS was approx 19/20 months and was continually climbing out of his toddler bed. We Put a gate on the bedroom door. Dd is 2 (turned 2 this week) and still has the sides on. She’s never climbed out so no intention of removing them yet but she is in a standard single size bed/cot so much more room than DS had so that could be why she doesn’t try to climb out

Dd climbed out at 15 months, went into her toddler bed the following week. Her sister was 17 months

DS was 3. He was a shit sleeper but to his credit he never tried to climb out of the cot so there was absolutely no way I was going to risk making his sleep worse by removing them unnecessarily. Once removed at 3 however he has touch wood never gotten out of bed.

NatalieH2220 · 18/02/2023 23:48

We switched my son at 2,5 to a toddler bed.

My Youngest was 2 in November and still in a normal cot for now. Will prob switch him around the same age too.

Sugarfree23 · 18/02/2023 23:52

When they climb it. My oldest was just under 2, LO a bit older but I can't actually remember.

gemloving · 18/02/2023 23:56

3, might do at 2 1/2 with second son.

AliasGrape · 18/02/2023 23:59

2.5 - although she rarely slept in her cot anyway. To be fair to her when she was in it she never attempted to climb out!

We took the side off, stuck some peppa pig bedding on and made a big deal of her ‘big girl bed’. First few nights were rough, I basically slept on the floor next to her, but she sleeps pretty well in there now (I mean as well as she ever did cosleeping - it’s never been great to be honest!)

TheCraicDealer · 19/02/2023 00:01

DD was 2.5 and had shown no signs of trying to climb out or anything. We knew we were going to attempt potty training about a month and realised she could hardly get herself to the loo in the night if she was in a cot, and didn’t want to have too many changes at one time. Generally speaking if they’re not trying to get out there’s no rush.

ViktoriaPlzen · 19/02/2023 00:02

When they climb out is my rule of thumb.
Both of mine achieved it the week they turned two.

MissAmbrosia · 19/02/2023 00:04

Mine was about 20 months and vaulted out of the cot during a not wanting to go to bed tantrum. Sides taken off the next day. We did find her asleep in the middle of the floor the next night, but she got the hang of it.

Dandelionsinthegarden · 19/02/2023 00:09

Ds was 3. 5 he had just never tried to climb out and if it ain't broke don't fix it! Switched him to toddler bed and hss never got out.

toomuchlaundry · 19/02/2023 00:27

When they climb out. DS managed to climb out in his sleeping bag.

TheTeenageYears · 19/02/2023 00:33

When they attempt to climb out or need to be able to get out of bed by themselves to go to the toilet- whichever comes first.

LadyJ2023 · 19/02/2023 00:36

Our son started sleeping in the bottom bunk bed from 6months he refused a cot and has been fine ever since he is now 2 There's a gate on his bedroom. Our twins who are 1 have been in toddler beds for the last 2 months and there fine sleep well and get up in the morning when there ready and play till I hear them and also a gate on there bedroom tho to be fair every bluming door way has one in our house lol

AegonT · 19/02/2023 07:47

Oldest was 3 - she was so used to a cot she didn't get out of her bed without asking till she was 5! She was a good sleeper. Youngest is still in hers at nearly 2. We'll make it into a toddler bed when she turns 3 or climbs out; whichever comes first. She's short so I don't think she'll climb out soon.

IlonaRN · 19/02/2023 07:52

17 months, as I had minor surgery that meant that I was not supposed to pick up anything heavy.
He was delighted with the change.

KangarooKenny · 19/02/2023 07:54

All of mine were being restricted by the cot bars when asleep. I’d find them jammed in the corner, or with limbs sticking out of the bars. So they were in a single bed by 2.

Smoothlines · 19/02/2023 07:54

The sides didn’t come down on our cot. DD went from a cot to a single bed at just age two.

Rayna37 · 19/02/2023 08:04

Agree with when they can climb out or are out of nappies: whichever comes first. Definitely not earlier than absolutely necessary!

RachelGreen90 · 19/02/2023 08:30

Same as others, once they try to escape!

DS before 2 as he started climbing.

DD is 2 but hasn't attempted to escape yet.

Hoping she'll be a little older so I can try too reason with her to stay put once sides come off.

As DS was so young it was a free for all every nap/bed time until he realised it was much comfier falling asleep on his bed as opposed to the floor.

PuttingDownRoots · 19/02/2023 08:34

DD1 was about 16 months... I was pregnant and struggling getting her in and out.

DD2 rarely ever consented to sleep in it!

fairtrauchled · 19/02/2023 09:26

DC1 was a climber so was in a single bed at 19 months.DC 2 went to a single bed at 22 months.

EveryLittleWish · 19/02/2023 09:28

20 months for both my boys ! They could easily climb out anyway so they were pointless .

EmbracingTheEyeBags · 19/02/2023 09:30

Ok thanks for all the replies I'm going to hang off longer then 👍🏻 he's 23mo, still in nappies. It was only as he generally wakes up several times during the night (but always has tbh) I thought he might feel less trapped if I took them off but he's not tried to climb out once yet and it is a deep cot, when he's stood up it comes up to about his chin so don't think he'd be able to either anytime soon anyway!
