Oatmeal for 7 month old. How do I make it?

I’ve looked up a few articles and they confuse me.

I was planning on getting some traditional oats but I don’t know how to make it smooth like a purée? Do I just add her milk and stir or do I need to blend it?

How did you guys make it?

Normal porridge oats, double the volume of milk. Just how I would make mine!

Don't know why you would need to purée it?

Batbatbatty · 18/02/2023 16:40

(I also just use full fat cow's milk..)

bussteward · 18/02/2023 16:41

Just make it how you’d make porridge normally? No need to blend it.

It's easy peasy. Just double the amount of liquid to oats in a pan, put on the lowest heat setting on your hob and when it starts to bubble, it's done.

HateEatingInTheDark · 18/02/2023 16:43

I would not use Cows milk till baby is 12 months old

Make a small bottle up with her normal baby formula and add it to the porridge oats as the description says

HateEatingInTheDark · 18/02/2023 16:45

A 7 month old should NOT be having cows milk

They shouldn’t be having cow’s milk in bottles/to drink, but it’s fine in food etc.

there’s no need for purée texture either o/p, at 7 months she should be getting some texture!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/02/2023 16:47

Of course they can have some porridge made with milk. Don't be ridiculous

Soapnotshowergel · 18/02/2023 16:47

Id make it as usual with full fat cows milk. Cows milk is fine in food (unless a known allergy of course).

Make sure you clean it up straight away though, it sticks like glue if you leave it to harden!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/02/2023 16:47

Exactly. Can be used in cooking. You cook porridge oats in milk..

Ladypuggerz · 18/02/2023 16:55

I agree, just use regular oats and cows milk which is fine for cooking. We also use Readybrek for speedy breakfasts. My little one enjoyed his with extras such as squashed berries, mashed banana, nut butters, prune puree, cinnamon. Such a great vehicle for other foods! Also now he is older: seeds, finely chopped nuts, honey (not before 12 months!) and sultanas.

To echo what other posters said, of course you can use milk in cooking for a 7 month old. DD had porridge at least 4 times a week from 6 months, sometimes with other things, sometimes made into porridge pancakes, and I wasn't faffing about expressing enough milk to make it at 7am.

mommgee · 18/02/2023 17:06

@HateEatingInTheDark when did I say I was going to give her cows milk?!

DragonbornMum · 18/02/2023 17:06

Make it exactly as you would make it for yourself, or runnier. For my PFB i used breast milk, but if I have another i'll be using cow's milk.

Okunevo · 18/02/2023 17:08

Over six months and they can have normal porridge made with oats and whole milk, no need for purees.

@Batbatbatty the part where it says once dairy has been introduced.. how do you introduce dairy to a 7 month old? She has cow and gate formula which is made with cows milk extract and she’s never had an issue with it so does this rule out dairy intolerance? I’m not sure what I’m doing

Know that it's a nightmare to clean up so feed baby it BEFORE a bath not after, it can get everywhere.

Readybrek is already smooth but normal porridge would be fine, I never pureed anything and DD was fine.

@mommgee hasn't she had yogurt, cheese etc already?

CatOnTheChair · 18/02/2023 17:18

Just make porridge with oats and (cows) milk.
Put a bit more milk in if you generally feed runnier things.
Put less milk in, make it really think, and spread on a plate to cool before cutting into fingers if you want "porridge finger foods".

If you want it smoother, you can put the dry oats in a blender for a little bit before cooking as normal. I never bothered.

Namesareimpossible · 18/02/2023 17:18

I do 2 tablespoons of oats and 6 of milk. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir then another 30 seconds. Works perfectly!

loveisanopensore · 18/02/2023 17:25

At that age you can just make normal porridge.

I did BLW with mine. I used to make porridge bars. Equal parts oats and milk. Meant baby could pick it up and it was (slightly) less messy.

My kids pretty much weaned entirely on yoghurt, chunks of cheese, milky porridge and meals made with mash/spag bol mixed with cheese/milk as required.

Think you have misunderstood something there. Are you thinking about honey?

OP, up to date paediatric dietitian advice is that cows milk is absolutely fine to use in food from 6 months (just not as a main drink until 12 months). In fact it is recommended that you do introduce dairy soon after starting solids.

As it is one of the potential allergens, the first time you give dairy you are supposed to just give a small taste, and don't introduce any other new foods on the same day. If all is fine you can repeat this in slightly bigger quantities over the following 2 days. After that you can safely feed it away as much as you want - yogurts, cheese, milk etc.

A 7 month old should be able to manage porridge consistency, but if you do want a smoother texture Ready Brek is just powdered oats - and is fortified with iron which makes it even better than normal oats for babies (iron rich foods should be a daily part of their diet from the start). There's no other ingredients in Ready brek... so it's actually an ideal breakfast for babies!
