I’ve looked up a few articles and they confuse me.

I was planning on getting some traditional oats but I don’t know how to make it smooth like a purée? Do I just add her milk and stir or do I need to blend it?

How did you guys make it?

@Okunevo this also shows a 2 biscuit portion when my LOs started with a third of a biscuit.

I do think sometimes we can be too over cautious with a tiny amount of sugars and salt. I made their teatime meals and didn't include salt and they ate what we did.
The comparison is what you see some babies/ toddlers with whilst out and about! My DC are 4 and 6 now and have a very healthy understanding and relationship with food.

I disagree. It is easy to give an under one no food with refined sugar added. My DD is 2.5 and I still make her cake with mashed banana and things. She does eat stuff with sugar but that's much different to a child who is under or has only just turned one. There is no benefit to them of refined sugar, zero.

The older they get the more salt their body can handle with salt. But even with things like cheese, if they love it the salt can add up. It's just being mindful when they're small and making good choices for them.

It's easy for people who are well versed in this stuff due to prior experience, or who like reading and are well educated to say such we worry too much. But for someone who had a child in covid and got no support for weaning, doesn't have the money to buy all the books and the time or ability to interact with content online, it is really important to understand how things like salt content can add up.

I live in an area which is allegedly quite middle class, and it has baffled me how many people have told me their eight month old loves sausages and ate three for his lunch type of thing. That might be a shocker to you, but I think it's surprisingly common off MN.

My DC lived on oats at that age Smile

Here's how we made them:

  • raw Irish jumbo rolled oats - chuck a small handful in a pan with a little bit of cold water (not too much)
  • cook gently for 5 mins
  • take off the heat, mix in 1/2 mashed banana, dash of cinnamon, splash of cold milk
  • enjoy!
