What age do daytime naps stop for toddlers?

DD will be 2 in April. She still has a daytime nap around late morning / lunchtime of 1 hr 30 ish.

What sort of age can I expect roughly that she will no longer need this?

Thanks

Kids are so different.

Mine dropped naps right after turning 2, unless he's had a really active busy day (like going down water slides and swimming all day during a holiday) and it wipes him out.

We noticed it when he started fighting naps and even with a 20min nap then wasn't tired until 9/10pm at night.

Rawrrawr1 · 18/02/2023 11:16

We are not far off 3 and he still has a nap at both nursery and home.. about 40 mins to an hour.
He is up from 6ish and goes to bed at 7.30..Constantly on the go all day.

However, quite a lot of his peers have dropped there's now..I am not looking forward to that day

Third birthday pretty much. He moved rooms at nursery and they tended not to nap in that room. Became much easier to put him down at bedtime!

Both mine stopped at 18 months.
They had friends whose parents were trying desperately to get rid of them the summer before starting school.
One of DDs friends used to be found regularly curled up in the book corner having an afternoon nap in reception 😁

NuffSaidSam · 18/02/2023 11:20

It really varies.

Average is probably around 2.5.

Personally, I try to keep it going as long as possible and when it drops replace with quiet time.

AreBearsCatholic · 18/02/2023 11:20

Both my kids stopped at 4. Yes, they stayed up late towards the end of the napping years but their behaviour benefitted so much that it was worth it.

DailyLaundry · 18/02/2023 11:20

They're all different. One of mine kept his up until late 3s, the other stopped around 2.
Kids at preschool (so 3-4) can still nap there if they need to/ on the way home.

GiltEdges · 18/02/2023 11:22

DS is just turned 4 and hasn’t napped during the week for around a year. The weekend naps lasted longer, but stopped altogether around 6 months ago. All kids will be different 🤷‍♀️

April88 · 18/02/2023 11:23

Just before 3. He moved rooms at nursery and had only been napping in the car for a few months.

70sShmeventies · 18/02/2023 11:24

It really depends on the child. DS is 4 in May and still has one sometimes if up early and will always fall asleep if we drive anywhere after 3!

jannier · 18/02/2023 11:25

When your child gets through the day happy without unexplained tantrums or hitting etc and does not fall asleep in the car or when sat listening to stories for 15 minutes. If they are running around at 7pm bouncing off the walls they need a nap in the day as they are over stimulated and can't turn off, like us when we're exhausted think we will sleep well and end up awake all night.

ShadowPuppets · 18/02/2023 11:27

DD was 2.5 yesterday. It’s 50/50 at home whether she’ll nap - but she always goes up at 12.30 for an hour and she knows she either stays up there and plays with her cuddlies or she sleeps. Fine either way but it’s quiet time not least as her baby brother naps for 1.5h then.

At nursery she always sleeps but I suspect peer pressure helps!

lorisparkle · 18/02/2023 11:28

Mine stopped at 18months (nightmare!!!!) although they would occasionally fall asleep late in the afternoon if they were in the car which was even worse! However as pp have said I had friends whose children were having a nap just before starting school.

We tried to keep the naps going but it would take so long to get them to sleep and then they would wake up incredibly grumpy and then not go to sleep at night. It was not worth it.

Emmamoo89 · 18/02/2023 11:30

Depends on the child

Phos · 18/02/2023 11:32

Mine dropped hers at 19 months. I dont know why it’s seen as a bad thing. Not having to work around nap times on days out, absolutely brilliant.

NannyR · 18/02/2023 11:36

It varies so much - I've worked in families where the four year old still needed a daily nap but their 18 month old sibling had given up theirs. Generally it's around 2.5 years.

Adrelaxzz · 18/02/2023 11:38

Ds1 about 20 months. Ds2 would still have one at the weekends when he started reception. and DH still has one every day he works from home and he is 49 😁

Duttercup · 18/02/2023 11:46

2.5 over here and no real signs she's ready to stop. She can, of course, survive a day without but if she does the last three hours are basically a washout of veering between extremely emotional and extremely manic OR the risk a car danger nap becomes too high.

CoalCraft · 18/02/2023 14:55

DD is just winding down her afternoon nap now - done days has it, done days doesn't. She's 2yr3mo. My niece, meanwhile, still likes a nap aged 4!

So it's variable depending on the child.

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2023 14:56

DS had 3 hour daytime naps until he was well over 3! And still slept so well at night time.

Screwedupworld · 18/02/2023 14:57

DS is nearly 3 and naps most of the time for around 45-1 hour. His behaviour is horrible when he is tired so still needs it. Definitely won’t be rushing him dropping it. My niece dropped hers at 18 months so all kids are different.

AliceTheeCamel · 18/02/2023 15:00

Both mine stopped a few months before turning 3. In both cases their nurseries (DC2 went to a different nursery from DC1 as we'd moved) tried to keep them having naps past the point where I felt they didn't need it, which made bedtime a nightmare!

RidingMyBike · 18/02/2023 15:03

4 to totally stop all napping but there was a lengthy period of dropping naps some days. She stopped napping at nursery at 2.5 years as there was a lot going on and they tended to nap them earlier than at home. But she was always v tired after 3 days in a row at nursery so would still always nap the days after that. So 4 days a week of naps until about age 3, then she'd nap 2 or 3 days a week until getting on for 4 years.

We gave her the opportunity to nap so she'd be in her room but left it up to her whether she did or not after age 3. We put the gro-clock on for nap time but called it quiet time instead. Sometimes she'd play for a bit then fall asleep.

Chickpea17 · 18/02/2023 15:05

My little girl dropped her naps at 32 months.

ScentOfAMemory · 18/02/2023 15:06

About 15 months for me. Otherwise she was still awake about 10pm.
