Hi everyone , ds is 6 days old. Very chilled baby the last few days. Tonight he os inconsolable and won’t settle no matter what we try . His cry is intense compared to his normal cry. We’ve tried feeding him, winding him, changing his nappy, offering his dummy. He is so agitate and just screams no matter how we cuddle or hold him unless he is super close but it takes so long for us to find that position where he his happy. Has anyone else’s baby suddenly been unable to settle . Also if I ring the community midwives would they send a health care assistant to come and check on him . Our next appointment isn’t for another 12 days .

thanks in advance

Hey, first of all congratulations!

Secondly, yes, they would send somebody to check on him if you have concerns or they may send you to your local birth centre/hospital. You're covered for 28 days post birth.
Does baby feel hot to touch? Is he feeding ok? He may have a ball of wind, try a gentle circular motion around his belly button. Also I recommend swaddling, a good swaddle used to settle mine almost instantly. Skin to skin is also super calming for a newborn.

Hope you are feeling ok, and hope he settles soon Flowers

Thirtymummafeb23 · 08/02/2023 03:20

@RenegadeMasterx Thankyou so much for your reply. He doesn’t feel hot to touch we’ve checked his temperature and it’s fine. We’ve tried winding him and bicycle legs incase he’s constipated. Only difference is his poo(formul fed ) wasn’t as runny, firmer ,more
like a sponge consistency , today. Still having wet nappies.
never had this with dc1 and even though he’s only 6 days he’s not shown any signs of being unsettled like this before.

If you are worried go to hospital to get him checked out. They will always see a baby. I hope he’s okay.

Agree with PP might be wind! I found the colic hold really helpful when my DC were inconsolable as new borns

Trez1510 · 08/02/2023 03:34

I know this will sound odd, but have you changed anything scented around him? New candle, detergent, perfume, aftershave etc.?

Something similar happened to my niece's wee one when he was about two weeks old, completely inconsolable in direct contrast to his (until then) chilled, laidback wee self.

As I say, it sounds mad, but they decided it was his Dad's (overpowering!) new aftershave that was upsetting him. He calmed down as soon as Dad scrubbed it off and went back to his usual scent.

Thirtymummafeb23 · 08/02/2023 03:37

@Trez1510 we haven’t changed anything it’s so odd.

baby was 3 weeks early other than being early perfectly healthy. Just has tongue tie that hasn’t seemed to bother him . Just can’t settle him at all

Sounds like a pain cry. Probably colic (esp if crying worse in evening) or maybe tummy ache if poohs have changed. It does get better the bigger they get, just awful to go through at the time. What's baby eating/how often?

SassyPants87 · 08/02/2023 03:48

@Thirtymummafeb23 i would get a second opinion about the tongue tie as it can exasperate other symptoms such as colic and reflux. With tongue tie they have restricted oral function and sometimes cannot efficiently latch onto breast or bottle therefore taking in more air when feeding which will make them uncomfortable.

Quitelikeit · 08/02/2023 03:57

I’d bathe him

at 6 days old his stools should be v v soft

remember To wind him regularly it annoys me when people say they don’t have a windy baby then they’re confused when the baby starts screaming every night - erm yes that’s because you didn’t get his/her wind up and now you’re all paying the price!!

soooo definitely wind regularly

try a hot water bottle on tummy

MittensForKittens123 · 08/02/2023 05:22

Congratulations!

It’s very unlikely to be this, but it is worth checking that he doesn’t have any of your hair wrapped around a finger or toe, or even his penis. It happens easily, and can be really painful for them.

I'd second getting a second opinion re: tongue tie. If their latch is slightly off they can get terrible wind. If this becomes stuck you will know about it!

Becproc23 · 08/02/2023 07:34

Congratulations!

We had this exact thing happen with our 4 day old baby last week. Rang 111 and took him to A&E. He had been crying for 2 hours until red in the face. No temperature and had tried all the usual comfort things (new nappy, feeding etc). Turns out it was indigestion and he actually settled once we got to the hospital. We have to spent extra time burping him after feeding.

Thirtymummafeb23 · 08/02/2023 10:24

Hi everyone just to update. I rang the community midwives who said that his tongue tie may be making his wind worse however they are not concerned about his tongue tie as he hasn’t lost a massive amount of weight since birth so is therefor getting the milk he needs. Even though I expressed my concerns that each bottle is different , some times he is so restless and searching for milk but pushes the bottle out with his tongue . Or opens his mouth far too wide for the bottle.

we were just told if it’s a medical emergency of urgency then take him to the labour ward

I think this is quite bad form from them. We were told as soon as baby was born he had tongue tie. HV came to visit us. I said nipples were a bit sore and he was very windy, she referred straight away. Consultant did the procedure after a chat about symptoms. I would push them on this. It's not good for either of you to be going through this.

There is the option to go private but obviously that costs.

My other son who was bottle fed was doing the same as what your baby does at the bottle, and the milk would stream out of the sides of his mouth. He had terrible colic. HV did refer but consultant not as forthcoming that time so I pushed. They gave another referral and consultant did the procedure 2nd time.

That’s interesting @ljhals my oldest had mild tongue tie but it never bothered her. It’s horrible seeing him squirm in pain and nothing I can do would settle him.
we’ve brought infacol to try today . Abs been sitting him up a lot more. Problem is is that he does actually burp when we wind him he just still seems distressed.

havent for the health visitor out for a long nearly two weeks. But I’m registering him with the gp today. I’m going to push for this if nothing improves on a few days

Could it be CMPA?

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/02/2023 11:35

hard to say really, many things can cause upset in babies
colic (anti colic teats can be useful)
reflux
constipation
formula disagrees with him and he's struggling to digest which causes gas build up

ScoobyBooby · 08/02/2023 12:02

I was going to post about any allergies

@OP does baby have any other symptoms ?

Thirtymummafeb23 · 08/02/2023 12:46

@ScoobyBooby
just harder poos that are like soft pebbles rather when liquidy
skin seems fine

Ah it's tough when they're so small!

Sounds like constipation/ wind pains. What bottles are you using? Definitely try something like mam anti colic or dr browns bottles and if maybe think of changing formula in case it's just not agreeing with them

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/02/2023 13:14

There's a few ways of dealing with constipation/colic
Anti-colic teats,
Infacol
If your baby is bottle fed you can offer some additional cool boiled water between feeds to up their fluid intake to help soften stools
When making feeds always put water in the bottle first, and then add the corresponding number of scoops, the final volume will be more but the concentration will be correct.
Your HV or GP should be able to advise if it continues

Constipation is a symptoms of CMPA .

Does he have any reflux , foul smelling wind ?

Could just be his digestive system getting used to the milk too ! I’d try a warm bath .

Your poor little babe :( What formula do you have him on or are you pumping? I used Aptamil Organic and it gave my son terrible wind, switched to Hipp organic and he was much less windy and more comfortable. Also I had the Mam anti-colic bottles which you can hear the air squeaking out of.

Quitelikeit · 08/02/2023 13:24

Your baby shouldn’t be pooping out pebble type poos after 6 days

tell the MW

Doowop1919 · 08/02/2023 21:49

My first thought was CMPA too. My first had it and screamed all the time. I think it's more common than we know. I cut all dairy for my second at 36 weeks pregnant, my son came at 39 weeks and is now 13 days old and we're having a totally different experience. I'd trial it... It takes 3 weeks to leave their system.
