Flasks for formula

After 3 weeks of researching and debating the best way to prepare formula on the go for my newborn, I’ve decided to go with the method of 2 flasks, one for boiling water, one for cooled boiled water and then the formula dispensers.

Im looking for advice on which flasks are best for this. According to Tommee Tippee themselves, their flask isn’t suitable for making up formula, only for warming.

I would also like to know how best to prepare the cooled boiled water, as in, do I boil the kettle, leave it for so long and then put in the flask in the fridge without the lid on? Or can I boil the kettle before bed, leave in overnight and then put in a flask in the morning?

Flask Smart Temperature Display Baby Kids Water Bottle Insulated Thermal Digital Thermo Stainless Steel Vacuum Drink Flasks Warmer Hot & Cold Drink Bottles Coffee Tea Travel Mug 500ml LED Blossom Pink amzn.eu/d/1Rakv9J

I have used this flask. It shows the temp on the top so you can be sure the water is above 70 degrees (tends to stay above that for approx 4 hours).

It's lasted me all of this year (my baby is just about to stop formula) and is good as new. Only use for boiling water so never gets contaminated.

Cheap enough on Amazon too!

For the cooled boiled water I just use a sterile bottle xx

Too add, I don't premeasure the cooled water - I use the bottle lid to measure it out. I usually do 1.5 of hot to mix with powder then top up to 8oz with cooled.

The flask is a good method for when you are out and make it ahead of time. At home, we pre made our bottles. Let them cool and put them in the fridge. I'd just warm in the microwave when needed. I know they say not to use a microwave because of hot spots but you can test the milk beforehand.

Let me clarify now I've had a think. I used to boil the water and add the right amount to the bottle and leave to cool. When needed I would add powder and shake. That way you can be out but not need to heat it. Tommee Tippee used to have little pots that would sit inside the bottle. All sterile.

But you aren't sterilising the formula powder as you're adding it to cool water, not water above 70 degrees Celsius.

Well she's 14 now and still alive and no Health Visitor told me to do otherwise.

@cleowasmycat haha come on! Did you really just say 'I did that and my child's fine' what a cliche comment.

Advide changes as new evidence emerges from research. It's not rocket science. That's why we don't put babies to sleep on their fronts anymore, and why we use car seats, I could go on.

I'm glad your child was fine, you were lucky.

This is a minefield as guidance has changed for every one of my children!! My preferred way was to make the bottle at home chill fast and refridgerate. Then warm whilst out.
Tbh the only way to eradicate all issues with formula feeding whilst out is to buy ready made!!

Pretty sure the formula is sterile anyway isn't it?

No, not once it's open.

cleowasmycat · 14/12/2022 16:49

So everyone uses boiling water to sterilise the powder?

Aworldofmyown · 14/12/2022 16:50

Not everyone does, but that is the guidance.

cleowasmycat · 14/12/2022 16:51

It was 14 years ago so maybe I made them up and put in fridge. If out always used room temp bottles so didn't need to find hot water or microwave.

Leigh98 · 17/11/2023 14:46

For anyone who reads this at any point, instead of pouring the formula mix in to rapid cool just do the water. So I pour out the hot water in to the bottle, then pour it out leaving an ounce of hot water in the bottle to mix the formula with and then once the water has cooled in the rapid cool put it in :) that way it doesn’t need sterilising after every use!
