Flasks for formula

After 3 weeks of researching and debating the best way to prepare formula on the go for my newborn, I’ve decided to go with the method of 2 flasks, one for boiling water, one for cooled boiled water and then the formula dispensers.

Im looking for advice on which flasks are best for this. According to Tommee Tippee themselves, their flask isn’t suitable for making up formula, only for warming.

I would also like to know how best to prepare the cooled boiled water, as in, do I boil the kettle, leave it for so long and then put in the flask in the fridge without the lid on? Or can I boil the kettle before bed, leave in overnight and then put in a flask in the morning?

Following and bumping because I wondered the same thing. I recently bought thermos flasks and boiled the kettle this morning. Filled up the hot one no problems. Then it dawned on me do I leave the lid off the flask to cool down but then it's not sterile right? Leave it in the kettle? But that's not air tight either... 🥴 So I ended up taking pre made again!

It’s such a minefield isn’t it!
I spoke to a friend since posting this morning and she boils the kettle before bed, leave it to cool overnight and then puts in a flask in the morning. Apparently water stays sterile for 24 hours after boiling.
Hope this helps you!

Just be mindful that if you're doing it this way once you add the powder to the hot water, your measurements will be scewed. So you'll have to add a tiny bit more cool water than you might think. Do you get what I'm saying? It's a bit hard to explain.

Won't matter too much if your baby is older, but if it's for a newborn you'll need to be more careful to as not cause constipation.

I put the cooled water into a sterilised bottle to the correct level you'll need when making up a bottle. Then you put the hot water in, powder, shake. And add the cooled water in which is already measured out so no guesswork needed.

Then before you put everything away, measure the cooled water out for next time.

I'm sure there might be better ways of doing it, and it's going against the guidelines but it's worked for me so far (baby number 2 - 6 months)

For us, tommee tippee flask for hot water, any water bottle I can find for the cold water (tap), done this from 3 weeks old and always fine.

The point of taking out 2 flasks is so you use the hot water to kill the bacteria in the formula powder. Not so that it’s the right temp.

So hot water first, formula, swirl, top up with cold.

But I guess if it’s working for you then no worries!

pinkpotatoez · 12/12/2022 20:11

What about a nuby rapid cool? You can prepare formula in there with boiling water and it brings it down to the correct temp

Sorry, I didn't explain this very well. I wanted to mention that there's the cooled water already measured out so my post sounds a bit garbled.

The hot water goes into a fresh sterilised bottle, powder, swish, and add in the cooled water that you premeasured earlier.

I used to make the bottle up before going out, let it cool naturally and always feed as room temperature. Make like so much easier as don't need hot water or somewhere that will warm it for you.

I considered one of these but they have to be sterilised after every use so not very practical when out and about for the day where multiple feeds will be needed 😕

Guidelines state a bottle of formula made up can only be kept at room temp for 2 hours before you have to throw it away so this wouldn’t work when we’re out all day

Ah yes thanks, I didn’t think of this. I have a perfect prep machine so may run a cycle on it without adding powder and see what water levels it gives

Let me clarify now I've had a think. I used to boil the water and add the right amount to the bottle and leave to cool. When needed I would add powder and shake. That way you can be out but not need to heat it. Tommee Tippee used to have little pots that would sit inside the bottle. All sterile.

cleowasmycat · 12/12/2022 20:57

Like these. Literally the best advice I ever had.

Currently formula feeding my 6 month old.
The way we do feeds when out for the day is to have a flask for the boiling water. Before we leave I prep however many bottles we may need with a pre measured amount of cool boiled water and then an extra empty bottle. I have the formula pre scooped into the formula dispenser.
So say for a 9oz bottle, we will have 6oz of cool boiled water in a sterilised bottle. Then when baby is due a feed, we’ll put 3oz of the boiled water from the flask into the empty bottle, add the formula to that and mix it in. Then top it up with the pre measured cool boiled water from the other bottle. It’s basically a manual way of doing the prep machine! It’s worked well for us. The only downside is you end up with loads of bottles with you!
hope that makes sense. I feel like I’ve explained it in a really longwinded way 😂

MrsF13 · 12/12/2022 21:05

We found this way also avoided the confusion with how much cool water to add as a previous poster mentioned :)

allboysmum3 · 12/12/2022 21:06

I do this. I have the SCO bottle for boiling water. I use a sterilised bottle with cool boiled and have a powder dispenser pot. It works really well and baby has a nice warm bottle freshly made whenever needed. 😊

allboysmum3 · 12/12/2022 21:07

SHO bottle rather!

The water level usually adds another ounce on for the formula. So my baby is on 5oz bottles. I add the powder then boiling water up to 3oz then cool boiled up to 6oz.

Hopesakiller · 12/12/2022 21:19

Check out first steps nutrition. Water kept in a thermos will lose heat at different rates depending on volume of thermos/how full it is, first steps has a table which shows this. Current guidance is to ensure water is above 70c

rosemarysalter · 12/12/2022 21:55

Use your baby bottles for the cool. Take one empty and one with water

Tommee tippee flask for hot

Also.... buy s few ready made
Bottles

Formula is such a faff if you're going out. It really is

rosemarysalter · 12/12/2022 21:58

The other method os to make the bottle
Up boiling hot. Put it in one of
Those bottle insulators to
Keep hot. Takes hours to cool down

that will be your first feed

HimalayaSalts · 12/12/2022 22:20

Using the nuby rapid cool method, but the flask I'm using for hot water is the thermos brand and finding it great

Rainingoutthere · 12/12/2022 22:31

I’m not sure how old your baby is, so this might make a difference.
i know this is not the recommended method, but it worked well for us.

filled flask with warm, slightly warmer than normal drinking temperature.
put powder in bottle.

when baby woke, pour water into bottle and ready to go.

This was with babies over 12 months I should add

redandwhite1 · 12/12/2022 22:33

I just used a thermos one as keeps hot for ages then the cooled water in a tommee tippe bottle with a lid
