So fast asleep that I didn’t wake up with everyone knocking?

I have a 6 week old and I’ve been getting less sleep although not that less last night. Something really weird just happened. I cosleep with baby (safely), we both fell asleep 2 hours ago, baby woke up crying and I didn’t wake up as I didn’t hear him. My brother from the other room heard him crying and came knocking on my bedroom door which was locked, I still didn’t wake up. Some other people too came knocking I didn’t hear. I woke up mins later and many missed calls later. I have no idea how this just happened. And honestly I’m so worried. My family are so scared that I had fainted or something but I hadn’t. I don’t know what to do I’m so scared and feeling so.. weird about what just happened. I’m never such a heavy sleeper that I wouldn’t wake up after all this.

If you do co-sleep make sure you do it safely. No duvet on bed (use blankets and wrap yourself up warm and wrap baby up appropriately). I used those large cellular blankets. No pillows. You can read up on the safety guidelines. Breastfeed lying down.

Maybe set your bed up for safe co-sleeping just incase baby won’t settle in middle of night so it’s all ready.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/12/2022 18:53

You are not cosleeping safely.

Sorry, pressed too soon. Lots of good advice here, try not to panic too much.

Are you managing to sleep when others are looking after your little one?

Allthingsbrightandbeautifulx · 09/12/2022 19:01

You say he’s only 5 weeks - sorry if this is a big personal, but are you still bleeding? If you were anemic before birth and are still bleeding then it’s a possibility that you still are. Get your iron levels checked.
Hope you get it sorted.

I am trying to sleep as much as I can when others are looking after him. If it was any other day I would be sure that I’m exhausted that’s why this happened. But I wasn’t even that tired today

I’m not bleeding anymore but the bleeding just stopped a few days ago. It’s possible that I’m still anemic, I will call GP to arrange a blood test ASAP.

This happened to a woman on the radio (Radio 4 programme Room 5) and it turned out she was having problems with her hearing. Just thought I’d put that in…

Really? Wow! I don’t think it’s anything like this tbh but right now who knows? Could be anything

I'm usually a very light sleeper and I remember this happening randomly.on very rare occasions when I had tiny babies. I think it's just exhaustion, you don't always realise how tired you are. Try not to worry and just leave the door unlocked. It probably won't happen again, you will wake up.

Herejustforthisone · 09/12/2022 19:26

If you genuinely don’t think you were that tired, perhaps it was something else. How did you feel before? Have you had any odd feelings during the day? How do you feel now, aside from distressed at what happened?

It’s almost certainly just tiredness but to not wake to the sound of your newborn screaming when you claim not to have been that tired is perhaps slightly unusual. Not impossible though.

NoHunsHereHun · 09/12/2022 19:27

I also know someone who lost a significant level of hearing after giving birth. This is worth getting checked out. 💐

ChocolateBauble · 09/12/2022 19:42

If you had passed out you probably wouldn’t have noticed. It’s possible to pass out from lack of sleep especially if you haven’t had time to eat or drink properly. If you had had a seizure or something then you would likely have felt extremely confused when you came around in a way that you wouldnt know where you were, what was happening or that the baby was next to you etc , also you would have probably knocked the baby off the bed. And that’s the only other worrying thing that could happen where you could possibly regain consciousness without medical help.

I think it’s likely to be exhaustion or passing out from exhaustion.
And definitely don’t co-sleep as it might happen again.

POTC · 09/12/2022 19:52

Sleeping well the night before doesn't mean much if you are sleep deprived, that wouldn't be enough to reset your system.

WakingUpDistress · 09/12/2022 20:04

I’d go and see the GP.
it’s extremely unusual fur mothers to nit wake up when their baby is crying, let alone just next to them. And also nit hearing knocks in the door etc….

Take a note now on how you felt when you woke up. Very groggy? Clear head? Unable to think clearly etc…. Any twitch you can remember? Did it feel like passing out? Whatever things you remember (that might or might not be relevant - it’s think it’s up to the GP to decide).
Have your parents/PIL notice anything different recently?

As you said, you might be aenemic and more tired than you think. Or maybe something else is going on.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 09/12/2022 20:54

A seizure or 'passing out' episode is possible, but as mentioned above, you probable will have felt odd when you woke up. Did you? Groggy? Spaced out? Anything unusual at all?

I do think it's a bit unusual to not have woken for several minutes of a baby screaming/door knocking/banging, yes, and would echo others advise to not co-sleep in future and definitely don't keep the door locked

dreamerkr · 09/12/2022 20:57

I felt a bit groggy when I woke up and sleepy but not confused or anything like that. It’s really unusual and was for several minutes. Once before too when DS was only a few days old, I didn’t wake up when he was next to me in his Moses basket because I was that fast asleep. That time DH woke up before me and picked him up. Now I feel completely fine so I’m thinking maybe it was that I was just sleeping so heavily? I don’t know, I don’t think it was a seizure or anything like that. Either heavy sleeping or I passed out

OP posts:
InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 09/12/2022 21:03

Well, it's hard to say, isn't it? Only your family know how loudly your baby was screaming/how loud they were banging/for how long etc etc. maybe you were just v tired/deeply asleep. Maybe you're very anaemic as mentioned above. But it is unusual and I would get checked out to be on the safe side.

Laurappo · 09/12/2022 21:03

Give yourself a break OP. Your a new mum. It's fucking rough and exhausting. It's done. You're fine, baby is fine, move on and forget about it or it will just make you feel shit.

I'm sure now you won't lock the door again and just be careful of they way you're co sleeping.

All is done and no one got hurt. Forget the might have been or what if. Doesn't matter now.

You're doing a great job hun. Go give the baby to the family and go have a long bath

dreamerkr · 09/12/2022 21:07

Thanks so much guys ❤️ it’s Friday today so I can only call my gp for an appointment on Monday. Is this okay do you guys think or do I need to get checked sooner?

Have you asked your family whether your behaviour and mood seemed normal immediately afterwards? Did they notice anything odd? You were very worried earlier and thought it was very weird but now 3 hours later your mood has changed. Which could be nothing of course, but just trying to rule out seizures.

I still am so worried and wanted to get checked out ASAP but everyone is saying that I must have fallen asleep really deeply or I passed out from tiredness. Yep I asked my family and they said that I did seem normal right after it happened although ofc I was really upset.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 09/12/2022 21:17

Well it's really unlikely to be seizures then, which is reassuring!

JLQ1020 · 09/12/2022 21:22

It sounds like exhaustion that you basically passed out for sleep derivation.
Another vote for either stopping cosleeping or reviewing the safe co sleeping guidelines.

As for settling baby.
Have you tried white noise? It was a godsend with my baby and helped her settle in the crib.
Also a hot water bottle placed in before hand to warm the mattress then taken off before setting baby down.
I also used a sleeping bag for my baby and she now associates it with sleep.
