Pramsuit in addition to footmuff?

I will be swapping from pram bassinet to the seat soon and was wondering how to dress baby? I have a footmuff already. Will I need a pram suit too or is the footmuff and a jacket and hat enough? Does the footmuff keep their legs warm enough if they are just wearing one layer (baby grow or leggings) on their legs? Baby will be 6-9 months from Jan-Mar so not getting out of the pram to walk outside until it’s warmer. I have been resistant to buying a pram suit so far as it seems awkward to take off inside shops and cafes. At the moment I use a fleecy star wrap (and blankets) as it’s easier to remove but seems best suited to a baby lying down in the pram rather than sitting up and it’s almost outgrown anyway. I find it hard to judge baby’s temperature when out and about as my hands are usually cold but obviously don’t want her overheating or too cold.

Depends where you are and likely temperatures surely?

trailerandtractor · 01/12/2022 16:51

Never used a pram suit with my 2. Just a zippy foot muff thing. And hoody/cardy/jacket on top.

drkpl · 01/12/2022 16:51

Depends on how long you’re out for. I couldn’t drive when ds was a baby. He had an all in one coat and a footmuff. When he grew out of the suit he just had loads of blankets and the footmuff.

My little one has only just started walking and so the concept of a pramsuit has really come into itself for me - it was just a nuisance before as far as I'm concerned.

I had a September baby last year, in winter he would wear long sleeve vest, babygro (or if not babygro, long sleeve top and joggers), cardigan, hat and foot muff. I think pramsuit at that age is not necessary.

trrk · 01/12/2022 16:53

We are East of England so not super cold. Day time temps mostly 0-10 degrees

How long are you out for? We could be out for a couple of hours in the snow so it was definitely thick snowsuit and footmuff etc. (Very energetic toddler as well as baby!)

Just between the car and cafe will be fine without the pramsuit,

Westendbuoys · 01/12/2022 16:55

DS wore a coat, far less faff than a pram suit especially once they can crawl away from you. I used to stick a blanket inside the footmuff if it was freezing.

gogohmm · 01/12/2022 16:59

Mine had snowsuits for the winter, the foot muff isn't very tight and they need a layer more than you as they aren't doing any exercise to heat them up.

We didn't live in the U.K. but we're in a similar climate

gogohmm · 01/12/2022 17:01

Both of mine walked young though, winter babies so by their first full winter were getting out sometimes, plus the little buggy didn't have a muff, it was far more convenient to use than the big pushchair.

hoipolloih · 01/12/2022 17:03

I've just taken mine out in his first ever sitting up pram ride! It felt freezing so he wore long sleeve vest, another long sleeve on top, leggings, socks and then a thick teddy bear material onesie, plus foot muff. I need to get him some gloves, I can just tell that is going to be such a faff because they'll get lost so easily...

trrk · 01/12/2022 17:19

Thanks all for the advice!

I don’t drive so during week our outings are by pram, either a walk to the local park or out to a cafe or the local shops and occasionally the city centre (40 min walk). At the weekends we might drive to a National Trust or similar and be out walking for an hour or two. Fairly rare to get snow and very cold weather here but every winter is different.

I use a pramsuit and a sheepskin footmuff if it's cold - otherwise just footmuff and baby in a warm jacket. We live in Scotland tho, so can get quite cold where we are

hookiewookie29 · 01/12/2022 17:38

Just remember that babies in pushchairs don't move around much so aren't keeping themselves warm.

lilroo87 · 01/12/2022 17:45

I wouldn't bother with a pramsuit. I found it such a faff to get on and off, my DD hated it.
We have a big muff thing which is super warm so I don't think you'd need a pramsuit aswell.
I tended to just layer her up and she was warm enough, although she had such an obsession with keeping her arms out of the muff but would never keep gloves on

SkylightSkylight · 01/12/2022 17:54

If you get a pramsuit, get one with a zip!

in your situation, I'd definitely get one, just make sure it's roomy so once over clothes they don't look like sausage skin!

if your foot muffins a good fit for your pra m & supported, you can also put a hot (not boiling!) small hot water bottle in!

@lilroo87

tge op is asking about a FOOT muff, if you expected your DD to keep her arms in, yours presumably wasn't a foot muff!! 😂

MGee123 · 01/12/2022 19:29

I usually put a blanket over her lap and then zip the footmuff up. I think they do benefit from an extra layer when it's cold as they aren't moving around.

FrizzledFrazzle · 01/12/2022 21:32

I'm in Lothian (Scotland) and it's definitely snowsuit plus footmuff here. Had a very sad baby for a week until I realized he was too cold.

lilroo87 · 02/12/2022 14:16

@SkylightSkylight haha, yes. It's like a whole pram muff thing. I don't even know what they're called to be honest. I'd love to blame sleep deprivation or being pregnant on my stupidity but I really don't think I can haha

LemonSwan · 02/12/2022 14:18

Oh god we did this the other day. Poor babe was dripping in sweat but then he is quite hot bodied.

Endlesslaundry123 · 02/12/2022 14:26

My 5 month old sleeps so well in his buggy when wearing a cozy pramsuit plus footmuff. Highly recommend.

trrk · 02/12/2022 14:26

Thanks again all for the replies!

@lilroo87 I think it’s called footmuff even when it covers most of the pram so you’re not going crazy. I brought an Uppababy one secondhand to match my pram and it looks pretty big and warm even though I haven’t tried it yet.

lilroo87 · 02/12/2022 15:24

@trrk that's good then.
Yeah, we have a really big thick one for our bugaboo buffalo and also got a couple with the double buggy we bought.
If they're nice and thick and cover all the pram then definitely try without a pram suit and just layers x

FTM2022SS · 02/12/2022 15:36

We have the bugaboo and the standard bugaboo cosytoes not the 'performance' one (SO cosy and warm) and use the cosytoes, jacket and hat! Only time so far I have used snowsuit and the cosytoes is when we went out for bonfire night and we're stood in the cold for hours. We are north west!

BertieBotts · 22/12/2022 22:05

Depends how thick the footmuff is, but I've always done jacket and footmuff (thick, like a duvet) and it's been fine. On really cold days i tuck an extra blanket over them under the muff.

Can't stand pram suits, way too annoying.
