Temperature and newborn sleep

Hi

I have a 8 week old and I've started putting her to bed in a long sleeved vest and a 1.0 tog bag. Our house falls from 20-17 degrees at night. Concerned my little one is not wearing enough but she easily gets heat rashes.

Can I ask what are your newborn is sleeping in and what temperatures
is your house at night?

Their room or sleeping area should be no less than 18degrees Celcius is the advice in NZ.
They also advise against polarfleece or other synthetic coverings. As these can cause the baby to sweat then get cold.

Aria2015 · 26/11/2022 02:06

I'd say that's not enough. I didn't use sleepsacks at that age though as I swaddled mine. For comparison though, my toddler is in a 3 tog sleepsack and a long sleeve vest and her room is 18 degrees. She wakes up cold in anything less. I do appreciate it's more nerve wracking when they're tiny. I'd definitely add another vest or go up in tog though. 1 tog for us is summer. Autumn 2.5 tog and winter (when room gets to around 18) we go to 3 tog. I know that's higher than the recommended but I've tried the recommended and as I mentioned, she was waking frequently cold and when I upped the tog, she slept through so I'm confident it was coldness.

Our room is currently 19 and my 15 week old is wearing a short sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. It felt cooler last night and room dropped down to 17 and she had a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I would say your baby needs more layers

17 degrees here and my 8 week old is in short sleeved vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog bag. I will probably be putting her in long sleeve vests soon. I agree 1 tog for warmer weather.

Crimsonripple · 26/11/2022 03:52

I agree. I had my son in a much higher tog for this time of year.

GetThatHelmetOn · 26/11/2022 03:58

I only used a 1.0 tog grobag in the middle of a hot summer. He was sleeping in 2.5 at the temperatures you mention.

Dollydea · 26/11/2022 04:04

Get him a 2.0/2.5 tog with a vest and long sleeved baby grow over the top.

A 1.0 tog isn't enough for U.K. winters

20viona · 26/11/2022 05:05

1 tog isn't enough. My 11 week old is in short sleeved vest, sleepsuit, 2.5tog gro bag and sometimes a blanket over her legs as it gets really cold at night.

Olios · 26/11/2022 06:07

Oh I feared this would be the consensus as it reflects the guidance. I am so nervous about overheating as she got heat rash from sleeping in a 1 tog plus vest in October, she hates blankets/layering on daytime walks and seems to get a sweaty neck easily from layering. I just put a blanket around her now whilst feeding and she flapped it off. She wakes every 3-4 hours at night which is hunger but may be cold too... impossible to know. I'd love to be able to ask her! I do think it's time for more though. I have a 2.5 tog bag and will think about how best to dress her tomorrow night.

It may even have been early November she was getting heat rash... just remembered we are at the end of this month! It wasn't that long ago anyway.

Exactly the same system here.
Op your baby will be so cold!

TwitTw00 · 26/11/2022 06:35

Mine would have been in a vest, sleepsuit and the sleeping bag at that age. I definitely never had my house at 18 overnight though, generally more like 16.

wishuponastar1988 · 26/11/2022 06:40

How does your baby feel? When they were too hot due to having the heat rash did they feel clammy and sweaty? The advice on the lullaby trust is that if they are sweaty or clammy to touch then they are too hot. My baby would be very cold in just a vest and 1 tog - she was wearing similar in august when it was very hot and she was a newborn!

Imogensmumma · 26/11/2022 06:44

Jeepers 1.0 tog I’m in Australia and about to go into our summer and my 5mth old is in a 2.5tog and onesie

A normal adult doona /quilt is 12 tog so 1.0 is like wearing a sheet to bed in the early hours she must be so cold

carefulcalculator · 26/11/2022 06:50

Does your baby feel warm or cold to the touch? I don't think 17 is a worrying room temp, but you should check your baby not rely on other people's advice as some do run hotter than others. However the sleeping bag is thin so I wouldn't be surprised if they are chilly.

Olios · 26/11/2022 07:20

She felt neither hot or cold when I checked her after waking before her last feed. She wasn't crying either and she does cry when upset (nappy/clothing changes, pauses in feeding to burp her, when kicking off blankets, when she's finished playing...) so she isn't a quiet baby when unhappy. She usually smiles when being picked up from sleeps too. I'm sitting up with her sleeping on me until the house wakes up as I can't change her for good 90 mins or so after feeds or she is sick and I'm nervous to put her back in the crib in case she's cold as house is chilly to me. She actually feels toasty now against my body I can feel she is warm. Will have new strategy tomorrow night.

I should have said she felt neither warm or cold not hot as that's the extreme end. Do your babies feel warm to touch in their 2.5togs?

OP posts:
BetterBee · 26/11/2022 07:26

Don’t worry about changing her unless it’s a ooo or the nappy is really heavy, nappies can cope with overnight wees.

if it’s warmer when she goes to bed, I’d leave it unzipped a bit and then zip it up when you go to bed (when it’s colder).

ineedafairygodmother · 26/11/2022 07:28

My 9 month old is a 'warm' baby, always has been. She's sleeping in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and a 1 tog bag. Shes warm to touch when I check her throughout the night..... she's just a warm baby

LeafHunter · 26/11/2022 07:29

I thought guidance was not to use sleeping bags till 3/4 months due to how they move and baby temperature? I’d swaddle or just leave them as they are - lullaby trust are great at advice on things like this.

Yes mine feels warm (but not hot) her chest when in a 2.5 tog

Moonshine160 · 26/11/2022 14:29

How does your baby’s chest area/their back feel to the touch? To me, that doesn’t sound like enough layers at all. Our bedroom is around 18 degrees overnight and DS is in a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag

Olios · 28/11/2022 07:35

The 2.5 tog is too warm for my baby unfortunately she was sweating and got a clammy neck and upper back in just a long sleeved vest inside. House was around 19 degrees when I checked at 3am. I'm going to look at 2.0 bags.

How about a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and the 1 tog? That might be ok for your baby

fpurplea · 28/11/2022 19:46

My 8 week old is either in a 1 tog with short sleeve vest and sleepsuit, or a 2.5 tog and a long sleeve vest. Our room goes between 18 and 20 degrees. When we had her in the 2.5 tog plus sleepsuit as well, she overheated. Seen both configurations advised.
