What time do your 7 year olds go to sleep?

Genuinely curious, Dd 7, year 3 and nearly 8 is usually in bed by 7-7.30 but does not usually nod off until 9pm! She just doesn't seem to get tired and has endless energy!

she wakes about 7-7.30am, sometimes earlier. I have another child who's up at the crack of dawn every morning 😅

dd's closest friend is a similar age and her parent is often shocked when I say that Dd is often still awake until 9pm and had also made judgey comments. Her 7 year old goes to bed at 6.30pm and asleep by 7.

Dd is not roaming the house all evening, she chills in bed, often with a bit of TV then she has relaxing music to go sleep too on the iPad, she just wouldn't go sleep at 7.

but what is normal? Dd gets about 10 hours if she sleeps 9pm-7am!

Mine is like yours, not asleep till 9:30 / 10.

She is often up til then at weekends/holidays! She just keeps going she's not tired though nor does she look tired so it must be the right amount of sleep for her!

We have three similar in age (close together). One is asleep by 9, the other two are rarely asleep before ten.

You can't force them to go to sleep! If they aren't tired all the next day then thats fine surely?

Some of us are just naturally night owls...

captncrunch · 30/10/2022 19:13

Mine is also 7 in year 3, though August born. She goes to bed at 8pm at the same time as younger brother, though she usually reads in bed til 830 and then I turn the light off. It isn't unusual for her to still be awake at 9pm. She's usually awake 7ish. I've noticed it's really changed in the last 6 months or so, she used to be out like a light at 8!

FishFingerSandwiches4Tea · 30/10/2022 19:13

9ish

Bootskates · 30/10/2022 19:14

Also mine would look at me like this 😏if I tried to put her to bed at 6.45 like your friend, we often arent even home until after 6 from work/after school club

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 30/10/2022 19:30

My 7 year old goes upstairs at 7.30 and lights are out at 8.30, she'd sometimes still be awake by 9 but not usually. Up at 7. In contrast my almost 6 year old goes upstairs at 7.30 and is practically unconscious by 8. Falling asleep time definitely stretches half an hour or so per year I think.

Ship · 30/10/2022 19:32

Goes up between 7.30-8 and asleep anytime between 8-9 really

Mawface · 30/10/2022 19:33

My DS7 goes to bed about half 8 with DD10 but they don't usually go to sleep til probably 9/9.30. DS7 wakes up at 8am and is just always full of energy no matter what he's been doing.

SkankingWombat · 30/10/2022 19:34

My 8yo was awake until 10 or 11pm every night at 7yo, despite a 7.30 bedtime and following all the 'good sleep health' advice. She has since been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD, and struggles to switch her brain off enough to sleep. I attended a sleep seminar and they recommended making her bedtime later, with the aim she should be asleep within half an hour of lights out. We moved bedtime to 8.30 and this, combined with yet another increase in vigorous exercise (she was already very active), had her asleep usually between 9 and 10pm (still late, but much better!). She now goes to bed at 9pm, and is fairly consistently asleep within 30 minutes. She uses a sleep mask too, which has made a difference by removing all visual stimulation: it reminds me of covering the budgie cage so it goes to sleep 😂

RedRobyn2021 · 30/10/2022 19:36

I don't have a 7 year old, but when I was 7 bedtime was 8 and I was asleep by 8:30. I think if your child is thriving then it's perfectly fine. 6:30 seems extremely early to me! My 20mo DD doesn't go to sleep until 7:30!

Caspianberg · 30/10/2022 19:37

My 2 year old is similar. No way would be go at 6.45pm.
We aim for 8pm in bed, but it’s usually somewhere between 8.45pm-9.30pm before he actually goes to sleep. He’s awake by 6.30am most days.

Caterina99 · 30/10/2022 19:53

DS7 usually goes to bed around 8/8.30 and I’d say is normally asleep by 9ish. Sometimes later on a weekend. He wakes up around 7am.

I’d say he averages 10 - 10.5 hours sleep. That seems to be around normal speaking to friends with similar age kids.

DD is 5 and sleeps around 11-11.5 hours

Nanalisa60 · 30/10/2022 20:00

This is a s the night to get them to bed a hour earlier, I always loved when the clocks went back got kids to bed a hour earlier as they did not know the clocks had gone back.

LemongrassLollipop · 30/10/2022 20:01

My 7 year old daughter goes up around 8.15 and is allowed to read in bed. She's usually asleep when I check on her around 9pm. Awake between 7-7.30am.

6.30pm is far too early for that age imo!

My 4 year old goes up at 7.30pm and I think it's important their bedtimes are different and she is older.

Bumblenums · 30/10/2022 20:03

My DD is nearly 8, she is asleep by 8ish and gets up about 7.30

teraculum29 · 30/10/2022 20:08

My 7 year old (8 in Feb) is asleep around 9-9:30.
She wont dozz off any earlier than that. She will be up around 7, sometimes before that.

Unfortunately she takes that from me, I was exaclty the same when I was a child.

HouseofGods · 30/10/2022 20:08

Goes up between 745 and 8, usually closer to 8 and is asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. Younger brother goes at the same time but it's not uncommon to pop your head round his door at 930 and he's still lying awake talking to his toy animals. Ds1 gets up at 8, sometimes needs to be wakened for school, DS2 always needs to be given a shake during the week and happily sleeps til after 9 at weekends.

DoubleNit · 30/10/2022 20:20

She's usually asleep by 8.30 and then wakes up about 6.30.
About once a year she sleeps in, until 7.

SaintVal · 30/10/2022 20:21

On a school night, my DS7 is in bed at 8. He reads a little then I read to him. Lights out at 8.30 and he's asleep within ten minutes or so.

He stays up a bit later on Fridays and Saturdays but no later than 9.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/10/2022 20:25

DS is 7 and I'm doing very well if he's asleep by 8:30, but 9pm would be more usual. And that's on a school night - it's all gone to pot over half term.

Smearywindowsagain · 30/10/2022 20:27

Asleep by about 8. They’re all different though

DelurkingAJ · 30/10/2022 20:28

All children are different. DS1 (10) and DS2 (6) go to bed at 8. DS1 will be asleep in 15 minutes, DS2 will sing to himself until about 9:30 (I can hear him now). DS1 wakes around 6:00, DS2 about 7:30. We’d let DS1 stay up later but he cheerfully admits that he would still wake by 6:00 and be exhausted.

Simonjt · 30/10/2022 20:30

Usually 7:15 to about 7:45, he is naturally an early riser and early to bed.
