Did Omeprazole work for your baby?

Posted the same thing recently about infant gaviscon which we tried for DS’s silent reflux - it didn’t work and he ended up constipated which was nearly as bad as the reflux. Also he is breastfed so getting him to have it was a nightmare.

GP is now prescribing omeprazole. DS is 5 weeks old. She said we can’t rule out a milk allergy but with him being so young it’s too soon and difficult to diagnose.

If your little one had reflux/silent reflux did it work for you? I am sooo sleep deprived and heartbroken at seeing DS so uncomfortable.

Yes, found it a life saver

romdowa · 20/10/2022 20:00

Yes ! It saved our sanity. We got the liquid version and a special dummy that you can slot a syringe into, it made the whole process of medication giving a breeze.

Maisie2019 · 20/10/2022 20:02

DS has lansoprazole (similar) and it’s saved us.

No. Though me cutting out all dairy did help. He did have a dairy allergy.

lucea87 · 20/10/2022 20:07

Yes!! We've tried a variety as well. My daughter has CMPA too. We were on liquid omeprazole for months and have recently changed to the capsules (opened and sprinkled over a tiny amount of vegan chocolate spread!) as now she is almost one she would refuse the liquid. It is a game changer, good luck OP!

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 20/10/2022 20:09

It worked great for my nephew who bad bad reflux x

DisneyGirl2329 · 20/10/2022 20:46

Yes! Took 2 weeks to get into his system and then he was like a different baby.

YourVagesty · 20/10/2022 20:47

Yes, it was wonderful.

Peaplant20 · 20/10/2022 21:13

No, We eventually worked out the problem was a tongue tie not reflux

Moonshine160 · 21/10/2022 09:54

Thanks everyone. This definitely fills me with more confidence than the Gaviscon!

Hi All,

Glad I’ve found a relevant thread on this as I am in a similar position re the Omeprazole.

Can I ask what ages and weights your babies were? My little girl was prem (36weeks) and is in the lowest percentile. She’s had a rough start in NICU, she’s now almost 10 weeks and her silent reflux has got worse and worse. I’ve been to a lactition and she does have some tongue tie but not severe enough to be causing the silent reflux.
I’ve read about Omezrapole can be great for this but I’m reluctant as she’s so small still - 7lbs 10 (she’s lost in the last week due to this awful reflux issue)

any help of guidance is so appreciated

thank you xxxx

Only liquid omeprazole worked for us, but once we got there - life changer. She went from 1st centile to 50th as milk was actually staying down. She doesn’t have CMPA, she has laryngomalacia so she’ll be on it until she grows out of it.

So glad that it worked for you, how many weeks was she when you gave it to her? I’m worried if the other side effects making it worse but I’m in despair as I can’t see her like this after every feed.

I’ve asked for an urgent referral at the GP to have it looked at by the paediatrician but I think it could take up to 2 weeks I’m not sure how long I can wait like this, I can ask my doc to prescribe it but I’m reluctant x

WorryMcGee · 26/10/2022 23:57

@LouEKerr 9 weeks, but still not fitting in newborn babygros. She was TINY. I was at my wits end with it, I even started a thread on it 😬 I was really struggling to cope, nothing was working. I had to have half a nervous breakdown at the GP (the fourth I’d seen) before they prescribed me the liquid - I didn’t know it existed before that absolute angel gave me a hug and prescribed it.

My baby had no side effects whatsoever, is now 6 months old and looks like a totally different baby. She’s still sickier than your average baby but it doesn’t bother her, she sleeps through, she can be laid flat, I don’t have to carry her in a sling all day, she loves her milk (and food now!) we have a paediatrician review in January and hope she might be able to come off it then as her issue is related to the strength of the cartilage etc and she’s grown out of the whistling/stridor so hopefully she’ll grow out of the reflux soon too.

I remember being terrified about omeprazole as well until my mum sat me down and said “why would you not treat the acid coming up her throat all day long”. And I realised I’d done too much googling and it was sending me insane.

It’s so hard. I hope you find your answer and things start to get better ❤️

YorkshireTeaCup · 27/10/2022 00:16

@LouEKerr my DD was 0.4th centile (not prem but very poorly at birth). We could not get omeprazole without trying infant gaviscon first. We (and our HV) were very sceptical about the gaviscon but it helped her gain enough weight to stop the cycle of weight loss / pain / constant vomiting. We found the trick to avoiding the constipation is not to give the full dose - we found 1/4 of the recommended dose was enough to slow down the reflux but not so much that it caused constipation. Took a bit of trial and error though. 😖 Not ideal, but if GP can prescribe straight away, might be worth a go until your referral comes through?

We are now at 16months, something lile 60th centile and reflux is distinct memory. It does get better!

OhTinyBear · 27/10/2022 00:42

DD was full term but only just (38 weeks), and unfortunately had severe CMPA as well as hideous silent reflux. She was around 8th centile at birth and dropped quite a bit in the early months, as feeding was so hard. My breast milk supply wasn’t enough to support her growth so we had to combi feed. I had to get over my own worries about omeprazole (my mum’s been on it for almost two decades now and developed osteporosis - now downgraded to ostepenia as she’s had treatment, exercise, and diet changes), because Gaviscon made DD painfully constipated. After a couple of bouts of that, I reluctantly agreed to omeprazole - and later kicked myself for not doing it sooner!

Once she’d been diagnosed properly with the CMPA too, Neocate and omeprazole (as the tablets/granules) were how we got through months 2-6. DD outgrew the reflux by about 6mo, and was discharged from paediatrics after the review at 6mo - so I’d echo the reassurance from @YorkshireTeaCup that it does get better. With the reflux under control and CMPA managed, DD’s growth accelerated way above her original growth curve, and she’s now 50th centile for height and 25th for weight at 20 months. She’s a glowing energetic bouncy little picture of health.

It feels so, so bad when you’re in the middle of it though @LouEKerr , I’ll never forget how despairing I was and how helpless I felt that I couldn’t just magically fix it for my tiny darling DD. So please go easy on yourself during this time - there are a lot of difficult emotions to deal with as parent to a new baby with reflux. It’s heartbreaking for you to see your LO in distress, and I think the impact of that isn’t really considered a lot of the time. Luckily we had an amazing health visitor, who was a source of moral support to me, as well as signposting and referring to useful support services. I hope you have plenty of moral and practical support around you, but if you don’t, please do consider chatting to your baby’s health visitor about what’s available to you as a mum. Good luck x

McLc88 · 03/11/2022 06:34

Hi! Just a follow up post to ask advice if anyone had a different result from omeprazole vs lasmoprazole? My LO has been on lasmoprazole for around 5 weeks now (7.5mg) half a tablet for silent reflux and also has a CMA and on nutrimigen. Recently his silent reflux has become horrendous to the point he can only sleep upright on one of us and even at that flails and thrashes about before occasionally choking. We do feel this was made worse by his vaccines 2 weeks ago (rotavirus in particular) but curious to see if contacting my GP to ask for a switch to omeprazole might make a difference? At whits end as to what else to do!

Maisie2019 · 04/11/2022 16:35

@McLc88 we were out straight onto lansoprazole and we found it very effective although I have to agree with you the silent reflux seems to have flared up since his 2nd set of jabs! He has been screaming when being burped again and I was putting it down to him having a cold but now you say it it has started since he had his jabs too. I have no experience with omeprazole but in some of the support groups im in I have heard a lot of reports of acid battles and it taking a lot longer to work.

Jcmars01 · 16/11/2022 08:19

So glad I’ve found this thread. We’ve just been prescribed omeprazole but silly question…did you give it before or after a feed? The pharmacist who dispensed it to me didn’t seem to know and just tried after a feed and that was a huge mistake! Thanks

McLc88 · 16/11/2022 15:56

@Jcmars01 we just got the omeprazole prescribed yesterday (oral suspension liquid). My sister in law is a pharmacist and she had said the same as lasmoprazole ideally first thing in the morning and then a 30 minute wait before bottle. Although we find this hard as giving him the liquid makes him realise he’s hungry! But we manage 20 mins maybe. Can I ask what dose you were prescribed? Ours is 2.5ml

Jcmars01 · 16/11/2022 18:42

@McLc88 this makes sense, will give before food tomorrow. We have been prescribed 7ml, my LO is 3months, how about you?

IssyM123 · 08/07/2023 22:31

Hi everyone

LO is 12 weeks old has had reflux since birth. No issues gaining weight which I know is very lucky. But will bring milk up after every feed, several times and sometimes over an hour after he was fed. Often seems quite unhappy and will arch back and writhe around after feeding and often wakes himself up doing this during the night (sometimes several times an hour), he gets hiccups a lot too.

so far have tried: different formulas, always upright for a while after feeding, swapped to dr browns bottles, gaviscon from GP

gaviscon has helped to keep milk down but doesn’t seem to have settled him seeming uncomfortable and he wakes up writhing, kicking legs, arching back a lot through the night

i wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything similar as I am averaging 2/3 hours of sleep a night and wanting to go back to the GP. I know many have said how Omeprazole really helped settle baby and I’m wondering whether this may help or whether our case of reflux isn’t ‘severe’ enough as baby is still gaining weight.

if anyone has any advice/experience with docs I’d love to hear it!

Abbytab · 18/07/2023 20:50

Hi IzzyM123, reading your post sounds like our situation, although gaviscon seems to have reduced the amount and frequency of milk being brought up. I sympathise with you and Hope you’ve had some improvement.
I’m also getting very little sleep, the other night an hour and a half over the night as he wakes up pulling his legs up and crying. I’ve found in desperation he can sleep on us in a semi upright position and on my mum in particular - he then doesnt seem to get the pains and sleeps for longer. I’m not sure what the answer is. We have been prescribed omeprazole but 3 out of 4 nights taking it he seems to have been worse with wind.

IssyM123 · 23/07/2023 08:00

Hey @Abbytabthanks for replying! How are you getting on now with the omeprazole? We have just started it and on night 3 now and also seen things get worse. Don’t think it’s trapped wind but something making him wake up several times an hour where he previously would sleep for at least 2 hour chunks! It’s impossible to know what the solution is! Hoping things have got better for you though x
