  1. Baked beans
  2. Tinned tuna
  3. Ham
  4. Salami
  5. Chips
  6. Ketchup or other sauces
  7. Shop bought bread
  8. Fruit yogurt
  9. Cheerios
10 fish fingers 11. Cheese (usually slices something like cheddar or mozarella)

I had more items I wasn't sure about so might add to this thread later when I remember. For context my toddler is 14 months and we have baked beans and fish fingers aboutq once every two weeks. He's had tinned tuna and chips once and fruit yogurt a couple of times but really liked these. He has bread or toast pretty much every day, sometimes several times a day. He hasn't had any of the other items but has been eyeing them when older DC has them. he doesn't have any problems with gaining weight. On the contrary (but that's another thread).

Also when did you let your child start having take away or restaurant food?

I agree with @mmmflakycrust81, food shouldn’t be restricted. Does my son have ketchup and chips everyday, no. Is he banned from having those things, no. The only things (that I can think of at 6am) that he specifically doesn’t have is alcohol, caffeine and due to choking, nuts and boiled sweets.

I think there is a difference between restricting food and just not offering it regularly. With Ds I'm worried that I'm giving him too much processed food instead of cooking from scratch. He loves all food so it's not that he would mind.

DD is underweight so I put zero restrictions on her. If she wanted to have a bucket of chocolate she could. I'd be happy just to get the calories into her. (Except she never does..she doesn't even like chocolate. How can anyone not like chocolate??? 😢)

11 month old in this house. He has had some of them. I don’t use any salt when cooking for family
1 Baked beans - very rare we have these in house they are my back up for when I just couldn’t be bothered. He only gets a taste though because of salt in the sauce and honestly the low sugar version s aren’t as nice

  1. Tinned tuna - no one else eats it so baby hasn’t had it
  2. Ham - don’t buy it anymore so baby hasn’t had it.
  1. Salami - too salty so wouldn’t give it
  2. Chips - he has had a couple plain chips to taste
  3. Ketchup or other sauces - don’t give these to baby because of salt content
  1. Shop bought bread - who has time to bake of course he gets it
  2. Fruit yogurt - Yes but mostly he has natural yogurt
  3. Cheerios - no one else eats these so baby hasn’t had any
10 fish fingers - baby loves these. I get the chunky ones so higher fish to coating ratio. Again it’s one of my couldn’t be bothered cooking dinner foods.
  1. Cheese (usually slices something like cheddar or mozarella) - we buy blocks of cheese and the baby would keep eating it until it comes out of his ears if I let him.

We fed pretty much everything we ate from 6 months apart from takeaways as we are rural so can’t get them but from 6 months when we went to a restaurant we used to ask a restaurant for a piece of white fish or salmon and veg for him and from about 9 months he had children's meal out. If he had something salty one day I just balanced it out in the next couple of days. Didn’t do ketchup just because I don’t eat it myself.

Yes to all of them except cheerios (very sugary)
Fruit yoghurt I'd check the sugar

With the saltier stuff like ham/salami/cheese/fish fingers I'd probably give only one of these foods in a day

With PFB DC1 we restricted a lot of processed foods. Now super fussy and slow to gain weight and I kind of wish we hadn't tbh

Also at what age did you start adding salt to your toddler's food? (Either while cooking or at the table).

My eldest is almost 5 and we still don't add salt to their food at all.

No salami or cheerios and ketchup very sparingly.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/10/2022 10:01

Only Cheerios as they are quite good for baby led weaning. Yoghurt, yes. Shop bought bread yes. Cheese - yes mild cheddar. Oh and fish fingers too.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/10/2022 10:02

Used salt from 1.

Thanks so much everyone for the responses!!

In terms of processing is there a big difference between cheese slices and a block.of cheese? I mean cheddar or Edam slices not the orange dairylea ones or similar. I thought they are just like pre sliced bread. (I guess you can tell by know that I'm really lazy).

Also what do you think of pita or tortilla wraps? DD likes them and Ds had them once and really loved them.
