Do long babies turn into tall children/adults?

DS is measuring 97th centile for height. Neither me or DH is particularly tall, I’m about 5’2, DH claims 5’7 but is more like 5’6 and a bit šŸ˜…

I’m curious to know if your long babies turned into tall children/adults. Obviously it doesn’t matter either way, it’s just unexpected that DS would be tall. He’s only 2 months so I’ll have a long wait to find out for sure!

Ds1 = tall baby & child and still growing at 15, over 6ft
dd = incredibly tall baby & child but stopped growing age 12 at 5ft 5

So could go either way! Dh and I are both average sized

HairyMothballs · 25/09/2022 18:53

Sometimes.

My sons were -
18in long, 6lb 14oz, a month early. Now 6ft 2, broad build
23in long, 10lb 13oz, on time. Now 5ft 10, average build.

I'm 5ft 1, husband is 5ft 9

oldestmumaintheworld · 25/09/2022 20:25

Yep. DS was 99th centile at birth. Now 6'5". Finally stopped growing thank heavens.

My dd1 was so tall as a child (was 55cm at birth) and like a previous poster stopped growing when her periods hit at 12 and has never grown since (she is now only 5"4).

Her youngest sister is a giant of a 5.5 year old but was actually born a lot shorter at 46cm. She is currently 125cm at 5 so we will have to see what happens with her.

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2022 20:38

Well I did! When I was born by c section in the 60s, the midwife told my DM I'd probably be tall because I had a long back. My DM, 5'3 on a good day, didn't believe it. The midwife wasn't wrong, I'm 5'10! I married DH, who's just a bit taller than me, and our sons are all 6' plus.

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 20:42

DS was around the 75th from birth but dropped down to just below the 50th by age 2. Tracked the same until growth spurt at 14. 5ft 10 and still growing at 16 so could possibly hit 6ft.

Hellocatshome · 25/09/2022 20:43

One of mine did, always been around 98th centile for height. He is 6ft 2 now.

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 20:47

I think you can predict adult height with child's and parental heights at age 2. I read that birth size is more about conditions in utero, then they rise or fall towards their genetic growth curve.

inheritanceshiteagain · 25/09/2022 20:58

They are usually similar in height to parents regardless of baby length

JenniferWooley · 25/09/2022 21:20

DD2 & DS were the same length at birth (51cm).

DD2 is almost 21 & 4'11" and DS is 14 & 5'11" so anecdotally birth length has nothing to do with adult height.

My whole family is a weird combination of really short & really tall people so we can never guess what any DC will end up being height wise!

ChildWontStopGrowing · 25/09/2022 21:26

I asked a paed friend about this as my boy was very long at birth but now is average-ish height.

Basically birth weight/length is determined by how nourished they are in utero. Once they are out, genetics eventually take over and they find their own height and weight.

Abcdefgh1234 · 25/09/2022 21:30

No.

i was small baby. And very thin. Born 2,5kg and height also small compare to my sister. Now i’m 32 and i’m 6ft. Plus i’m a woman. I’m so tall. I think i grew tall quickly starting around 10years old

Ah this makes sense! I think I’d heard that about 2yos before and had forgotten

My 95+ percentile for length baby girl turned out to be 5'9". So quite tall but not very tall.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/09/2022 21:33

Yes, ds on 98th percentile now 6ft 4

Dd on 95th percentile. Now 5ft 11

QueenOfHiraeth · 25/09/2022 21:34

There was an old wives tale about take a child's height at 2 or 3 and multiply by something to get their adult height. Apparently DS was going to be a giant! He wasn't and is just a smidge over 6ft.

sjxoxo · 25/09/2022 21:36

My baby boy is 104th centile at 8 months.
My DH is 2m10 in his mid thirties.

I think in our case, yes šŸ˜‚
Also possible she’s quick growing now but will slow down! I was a long baby and tall until the end of primary school. Stayed 5ā€6 from about 14. xo

Jules912 · 25/09/2022 21:39

DS was born on the 91st percentile, but gradually worked his way down and is now around the 25th percentile for height at age 10 so thinking no.
Kind of hoping it works the other way as DD is consistently tracking below the 9th percentile yet neither DH or I are particularly short.

he can’t be - there is no 104th centile. (Centile is a shortening of percentile/associated with percentage).
he can be over the 99.7th centile for example.

OP my DS was over the 99th centile at birth and is now 6’6ā€ at 16. But my DH is very tall too.

Blix · 25/09/2022 21:47

Two boys both 98th centile. One is 6'2 and the other 6'4". DH and I both tall.
The age two height prediction was accurate.

@underneaththeash im in france where it’s tracked on paper in his carnet de santĆ© - the curves of average are traced on and then the individuals measurements are marked on by hand - the squares that track the centiles go up ā€˜beyond’ 100 because it is the same graph for 0-12 months so you can see where you are. So currently he is the equivalent of 104th x

Explaintome · 25/09/2022 22:13

What are his feet like? When DS was born, the midwife said blimey look at those feet, he's going to be tall. And he is. 6'3" at 16yo

Explaintome · 25/09/2022 22:16

It's double the height on their 2nd birthday, but by that measure DS1 was going to be 6ft and DS2 5'10".

They're both 3 inches taller than that, although DS2 is still the shorter.

ladygindiva · 25/09/2022 22:18

Not adults yet but the longest of my DC as babies is the tallest of the 3 in childhood.

gingergiraffe · 25/09/2022 22:26

My daughter was the longest of my three dc by far. She is 4’ 11ā€. Shortest baby, first son is the tallest at 5’11ā€. Second son was in the middle but now 5’7ā€. I do wonder how accurate the measuring is at birth.
