Do long babies turn into tall children/adults?

DS is measuring 97th centile for height. Neither me or DH is particularly tall, I’m about 5’2, DH claims 5’7 but is more like 5’6 and a bit šŸ˜…

I’m curious to know if your long babies turned into tall children/adults. Obviously it doesn’t matter either way, it’s just unexpected that DS would be tall. He’s only 2 months so I’ll have a long wait to find out for sure!

I am 5ft 4 and my ex is 6ft. My daughter was 7lbs 6oz at 2 weeks late and 55cm. She's nearly 9 and 4ft6. She had very long skinny legs she always has. Everyone says she is going to be tall but it really isn't hard on my side of the family šŸ˜‚ I'm sure she may be slightly taller than me xxx

Fishandchipsupper · 25/09/2022 22:31

Yep, that was true for my two. They both followed their percentiles into adult hood, a tall boy and a short girl.

Sometimes, other times they are very tall until mid teens then slow down.

MrsMontyD · 25/09/2022 22:43

DD was born on the 97th percentile and is now about 5' 9" so fairly tall but not exceptionally.

Changingmynameyetagain · 25/09/2022 22:43

Ds1 was 98th centile at birth 9lb5oz and 56cm.
He’s 13 and 5ft 9, he also has massive feet (size 10!) He’s grown 4in in the last year alone 😱
He’s showing no sign of slowing down either.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/09/2022 22:48

DD1 was 24" at birth. She's just about 5'6" now at almost 16 so pretty average.

DD2 wasn't as long at birth but has consistently been taller at the same age as her sibling. I think she will be the tallest.

I think on adult charts, about 5’9/5’10 is the 99th centile for women! So sounds like your daughter tracked her centile.

FrangipaniBlue · 25/09/2022 23:08

DS 97th centile at birth and 5'9 at age 14

I'm 5'6 and DH 6'3 so I think he'll be at least same height as DH (MIL says she can't remember DH being as tall at age 14)

hopsalong · 25/09/2022 23:25

@A580Hojas I'm 5'9'' too and don't feel super tall. But in fact it is the 98th percentile for height as an adult woman -- so your DD has been pretty constant, or even shifted up the percentiles slightly!

hopsalong · 25/09/2022 23:31

@sjxoxo

By definition, no one can be over the 100th percentile.

There would be little point in marking the tallest ever known person at every age (by definition to 100th percentile) because these people say nothing about an average or even medically healthy person's height and health (sadly they usually have pituitary tumours).

However tall your DC is, there are almost certainly other DC of the same age and same gender somewhere in the world who are quite a bit taller.

It is, however, interesting and informative to know whether a child is on the 98th or 99th or 99.7th percentile, I agree, and this can be difficult to work out from height charts.

mondaytosunday · 25/09/2022 23:35

Not always. My son was really long at birth and the tallest boy in his class even though he is summer born so one of the youngest. But he stopped growing at 15 and several boys passed him.
Surprising as I'm 180cm and both his grandfathers were 190cm. He stopped at 181cm.

SatInTheCorner · 25/09/2022 23:47

51cm at birth - now 5'10
52cm at birth - now 6'4

Both male, both over the age of 20.

shivawn · 26/09/2022 07:37

I was born very tall, 61cm at birth and ended up 5'6.

My son was 59cm at birth and all the doctors and midwives told us he'd be very tall because he has such big feet! He's only 11 months now so who knows, I'm 5'6 and my husband is 5'11 so it's hard to imagine he'll end up super tall but he's on the 99th percentile on height charts for the time being!

Thistleinthenight · 26/09/2022 10:12

Ime , yes.

Zott · 26/09/2022 10:17

Not in my experience, (based on 2 children). Both my children are shorter than DH and I despite being long at birth.

PinkHeadphones · 26/09/2022 10:22

DS was long at birth, can't remember how long but noticeably so as the midwife commented, and is one of the shortest in his class now aged 12.
He was 10 days overdue though, if that makes a difference.

Knittingnanny2 · 26/09/2022 10:29

I think for a boy you double the height at 21/4 and 2 for girl if I remember correctly. Was accurate exactly for my first and third boy.
Not so much for middle giant sized baby boy
9lb 3 at birth and bigger than his 4 year old brother at 21/4 but evened out by about aged 10 ( so possibly around puberty?) Now late 30's he is same height 5'9" as brothers. Like you I'm 5'2 and their dad about 5'9/10
Keep all of your records! My eldest sons disabled child's consultant was very impressed recently that I was able to provide growth records for him which are being used in my grandchild's care and treatment!
