How do you do a full food shop with a newborn? The trolley seats seem so hard/dirty to put them in....

No it’s not more expensive 🤔 it’s the same price as in the shops

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 23/09/2022 10:26

I don't every use a trolley, I live near shops so I do little and often with the occasional big online shop, so I either pushed pram with one hand which I still do now or used sling when he as little. I have to carry them back so I never get too much.

Online is only more expensive by the cost of the delivery charge. You can get a small charge if you choose a less popular delivery time.

GiantTortoise · 23/09/2022 10:28

I remember going with baby DC3 in a sling plus two toddlers age 2 and nearly 4... after that one time I switched to shopping online!

SpinningFloppa · 23/09/2022 10:28

But it cost money in petrol to drive to the shop anyway? My delivery from Iceland’s cost £3 yesterday for same day delivery usually free if booked in advance. Worth not dragging a newborn round the shop, the prices online aren’t different to in store.!

Mamabear04 · 23/09/2022 10:37

Tbh I've only ever done a couple of online shops and it was through amazon/morriosns but I found the items more expensive even though delivery was free...am i missing something?

Online isn't more expensive. Asda online is so cheap.

Hugasauras · 23/09/2022 10:39

Just use the actual supermarket website, the prices are exactly the same as in store and by the time you've calculated petrol and the hassle and time of actually going, the delivery charge is worth it. And yeah just sling or stick car seat in pram. Some trolleys have attachments for car seats.

But do it online and save yourself the drudgery!

SpinningFloppa · 23/09/2022 10:40

Asda/Sainsbury’s/Tesco, amazon etc is more expensive but I would never use that for a weekly shop I sometimes use coop on deliveroo for emergencies and that is more expensive Than the shop but the main supermarkets are not.

Hugasauras · 23/09/2022 10:41

Also if you are going to do it regularly then you can buy a delivery pass for about £8 a month usually that covers delivery costs for all your shops so it's even more worth it! We are like £2/3 a round trip in petrol as it is, so four/five shops a month and it's actually cheaper to get it delivered.

DeeofDenmark · 23/09/2022 10:43

CLICK and COLLECT just like home delivery but no delivery charge as you drive to the shop car park and they meet you there and help you load it all into your car.

ArabellaDrummond · 23/09/2022 10:44

I did it all online when mine was a newborn. He goes in the trolley now but I’m still weary of doing a full shop just incase he starts kicking off.

RewildingAmbridge · 23/09/2022 10:44

There are trollies you can strap a car seat onto, don't just put the car seat in a normal trolley. Failing that take a thick blanket and use a trolley with the scooped baby seats on top, line the seat with the blanket, if you only need a few things just take the pram and scan and shop. It's really not rocket science

girlmom21 · 23/09/2022 10:44

Get a sling or carrier. Baby will fall asleep.

RewildingAmbridge · 23/09/2022 10:45

Also yes to click and collect, pull into the car park open the boot, load it in and take it home, baby stays in the car seat

AmongstTheCosmos · 23/09/2022 10:46

Sling. Was my best friend when Dd was a baby.

GiantTortoise · 23/09/2022 13:46

I use Sainsburys, prices are the same online or in store. I think most of the big supermarkets are the same.

BeanieTeen · 23/09/2022 13:59

You can use the trollies where you attach the car seat, or pop a blanket on the trolley seat. Or use a sling or carrier.

chocsaucestrawb · 23/09/2022 19:48

@Mamabear04 online all the way !

Since having my 9 wk old it's the only way ! I use Tesco, I do a 7 day meal plan and it's amazing. Would never go back. I do miss browsing the isles and seeing what's on offer but it's much much cheaper as you can look for the deals and stick to a budget and no surprises at the till

I must admit I am a pro !! I can do £60 a week ish for a family of 4 including lunches, dinners, snacks and all cleaning products and toiletries
Fairly healthy but treats too

Delivery is £1.50 if you choose a flexi slot so it's a 4 hour window so I choose Sunday 4-8 when I know I'll be home x

chocsaucestrawb · 23/09/2022 19:50

Sorry my newborn doesn't really count as she doesn't eat obviously so that's not including milk nappies or wipes that's just for us 3 but still I think £60 a week is pretty good considering it's everything

I do have a local shop that sometimes I do have to get bits
Top up like fresh loaf or milk if we run out x

mamamomojojo · 24/09/2022 00:52

I used to go walking / shopping in the mornings and only buy what I could take home in the buggy. Beautiful days I want them back! That was with my first. With my second…. Less walls, hubby did the shopping .. with the third… online shopping… . Click and collect

Mamabear04 · 25/09/2022 20:31

@chocsaucestrawb how on earth do you manage to only spend £60 for 3 people for 7 days?!?!!! What do you eat????

Mamabear04 · 25/09/2022 20:32

Thanks everyone. I actually walked to the local tesco metro to get enough for dinner then did a click and collect for the next day. 100% getting it delivered next time. Thanks for changing me life! Its bloody marvellous!!!! 😁

Sainsbury online delivery has increased my quality of life soooo much! You can do a saver slot for £1, it's a 4 hour window, I usually do it after bedtime. I hate being in the supermarket then remembering you need something at the other end of the store/can't find a product or any staff to ask - online shopping completely removes this issue.
