Things I never want to hear again as a parent

A thread on things I have hated hearing during pregnancy / becoming a mother for the first time. I'll start with 3, for now!

Disclaimer: somewhat lighthearted, somewhat I am going to punch someone in the face if I hear these things... But am not trying to start arguments with anybody about why people might say these!

  1. "just wait..."... It seems no matter what stage you are of parenting or pregnancy, it's about to get a whole lot worse so don't complain about it or you will be met with "oh just wait". E.g. "oh your boobs are sore now. Just wait until your milk comes in"... "oh you are tired now? Just wait until they are teens and you are up all night worrying about them".

  1. "nap when they nap"... The most unrealistic thing for me. It might happen once a day if things are going to plan, which they rarely do with babies. Food needs to be made, pets fed, bottles sterilised, wash on, catch up with family / friends, etc etc...

  1. "and how did they sleep last night".... For me so far there are only 2 answers. Either they kept to their routine, (I know I'm one of the lucky ones here) which I am blue in the face telling the same people over and over so they should know by now, or else they didn't in which case I am probably tired and kranky and don't need to be reminded I got eff all sleep last night.

"Take it one day at a time". I'm quite early on in my first pregnancy and am suffering very badly with anxiety - this is the first phrase that comes out of almost everyone's mouth!
I know they mean well but good god it can be tough getting from one hour to the next let alone the day 😂😭

“Muuuuuuuuuuu-uuuuuuuuuuuum”

to be fair that’s coming from the kids and not other people!😂

'Mum, don't worry but...'

To be fair mine are a lot older (early 20s & late teens) so different issues to when they were younger.

From my children...

"I need xxx for school tomorrow"

I got that at 8pm from DD last night (yr7, baking ingredients, fortunately for afterschool club not a lesson so she won't get in trouble!)

"Just eat a ginger biscuit before you get up"
At that point in pregnancy I was waking up multiple times a night to vomit, ginger biscuits really weren't cutting it...

Also while pregnant: "Sleep now before the baby comes"
I had pregnancy insomnia, it wasn't a choice...

  1. have you tried ginger biscuits for your sickness?
Yeah, I did. They did nothing except make me vomit more. Medication eventually helped at week 22.

  2. it will all be worth it in the end.
Said when I had the worst PGP and couldnt stand up easily. Tendonitis. Hyperemesis and a number of other issues.

  3. sleep when baby sleeps.
This is a myth. I couldnt do this so hat off to anyone who can.

  4. you look well.
Normally said when i know i look like absolute crap as ive had zero sleep for 4 days. Id rather people said i looked shite.

Well we KNOW he is masking in school but there isn't anything we can do until he stops

Yes we know he will do better with a laptop but we arnt prepared to tell him to bring it in you should do that yes we KNOW he is immature for his age and does exactly what the teacher says but there is no reason why it shouldn't work this year (it hasn't worked out for the last two years)

What makes you "think" your child has difficulties? (Hands over stacks of evidence and professional reports) gosh he has been seen by quite a few people do you notice anything at home or I'd this all coming from school? 😳🙇

God yeah!😖I still remember with horror and a kind of amazement how my dd never slept. She’s 16 now, but l honestly think it traumatised me for life.

This was the worst one. Not only can you not really sleep while pregnant but sleeping before the baby comes isn't really going to help me. I cant accrue sleep and use it at a later date!

"are they good?"

I used to hate this! My twins were grumpy, screamy little babies who were never content just gurgling or watching the world go by but I hated the implication of this question being that if they weren't "good" they were bad. They weren't bad. They were babies.

'Can I ask a favour?' To which the answer is ALWAYS either 'how much?' or 'where to?' Depending on whether it's to borrow money or get a lift....

Where are my shoes? From my dc.
For crying out loud you wear the same pair everyday. How hard it is to allow it to have fun with the other shoes in the dedicated shoe cupboard.

@inkyBinkyBarleyBoo this!!!! So Infuriating! I never know how I'm supposed to answer that question.

Do you know where my xyz is (from the dc)

Goodness they are fussy eaters (no, they are just tired toddlers)

Well, just tell them to do it (have you ever tried ‘just telling’ a stroppy pre teen to do anything and expected instant compliance and a sunny disposition)

When mine were young they always (walked to school up hill for 10 miles both ways dodging cannonballs etc)

Some gems from my own mother:

"Are you sure there's only one in there?"

"give them some baby rice, probably hungry" (about my 4m old)

"Just leave them to cry. You turned out ok"

Sleep when the baby sleeps is the worst piece of advice I’ve ever heard. Dreadful.

I have twins- every day we get ' are they twins? are they identical? do you ever get them mixed up? god that must be hard? Do you ever dress them in matching clothes? Why is their hair different if they are identical? which one is the evil/ naughty/oldest/prettier/good/clever/ your favourite twin

One of them got a big bruise on her face from falling off monkey bars (She was fine apart from the bruise) but I got told countless times how lucky and useful it was because it was easier to tell them apart for a bit. That got annoying quickly.
