8 week old vax - odd behaviour

Hi All

Is it normal for my 8 week old to lose appetite and have a change to their cry/ more irritable after the 8 week vaccinations? Sad

I'm so upset as it's not like my lo to be like this. She's never cried like that before it's horrible.

I am tempted to call 111 if it continues. As far as I can tell no high temperature when I checked her.

She's currently asleep on me. Any reason why she would cry like this

Did the nurse give you signs of what to look out for and tell you to give calpol? Mine was certainly more irritable but cry sounded the same.

Nat888 · 07/09/2022 19:07

Yes.. mine was upset and had an odd cry the day of his 8 week jabs. It was in the middle of the heat wave and it was awful.

Have you been given the advice about calpol/checking temp?

The whole day was awful. He had a really bad fever which did come down with calpol.

The next day my little one was fine. Calpol and cuddles. If you are worried do give 111 a call though

Oh he also didn't want to eat much

Nat888 · 07/09/2022 19:12

(Sorry - I just saw you checked temp)

JulyDreams · 07/09/2022 19:20

@Nat888 god I can only imagine in that heat! Yes been given advice on calpol- her next lot is due at 11.

She has lost her apetite also

Nat888 · 07/09/2022 19:26

Yeah it was hell. And with him not wanting to eat with it being so hot just made it even worse.

I would keep a very close eye on her. Keep offering feeds even if she is showing no hunger signs. My little one got a bit of appetite bsck at about 10pm.
It maybe a sleepless night for you - it was with me because I was worried but my little one was absolutely fine the next day.

If she gets worse or you are worried don't be afraid to give 111 a call. They will be able to advise if they think she needs to be looked at. It really is a horrible day for parents.

Twizbe · 07/09/2022 19:28

It's totally normal. Some of them will sleep loads too.

They make up for it after a day or two.

Keep on top of the calpol.

This reaction is WAY better than how she'd be if she caught the diseases.

Olivia199 · 07/09/2022 19:34

My little one had a weird cry and totally lost her appetite after her 8 week jabs. Turns out she was just gearing up for some sick. Other than that she was very sleepy but totally fine by the next afternoon. She was sick after her 3rd lot too.

I believe losing appetite/being sleepy/not feeling okay and what not is all quite common but should be absolutely fine later. It may well be that this cry is their way of showing their distaste for the situation!

Namechanger965 · 07/09/2022 20:41

It’s completely normal. If you think about when you have a vaccination, you get a bit of a stiff arm/muscle ache after wards, sometimes a headache or other symptoms. It’s the same for them only they can’t verbalise it so they just cry.

JulyDreams · 07/09/2022 21:20

Thank you so much @Nat888 how long did you say it all lasted in total? She had her injections at 1:30 today x

Usually fine within 24-48 hours :)

JulyDreams · 07/09/2022 21:21

Thank you everyone cannot say how much it's helped.

I am suffering with postpartum anxiety very seriously so I need to get it checked by my gp very soon as it feels like it's getting worse Sad

DP is so calm and collected

Yes it’s completely normal. My DS had his first one two months ago. He was crying non stop, temperate and didn’t want to eat anything. By the time he woke up in the morning he was back to normal. It’s just the side effects of the immunisation tbh, don’t worry!

My little one had his at 8.30am. Spent most of the day crying and sleeping. I just held him most of the day cuddled and made sure i did the calpol doses.
Got a bit of his appetite back about 10pm that night and was fine when he woke up the next morning.

He actually has his 12 week ones tomorrow 😬 at least its not as hot this time.

Hope your little one recovers quickly - it must be scary for them bless them xx

JulyDreams · 07/09/2022 21:37

@Nat888 good luck for your little one tomorrow! I've heard it's not as bad as the first dose.

I will be giving her plenty of cuddles tomorrow. Over the shoulder method seems to work the best!

It's so scary isn't it. I just worry there was something else wrong with her that she can't tell me. Don't know why

First lot of jabs were awful for my DS - he cried pretty much the whole night and wouldn't settle at all, wouldn't drink. It was awful to see.

However ....Second and third lot were a total breeze! I was dreading it so much as well. I just kept him topped up on calpol, he was breastfeeding at the time so he was somewhat comforted by that, but the second and third lot he was on bottles. I don't think we even needed Calpol with those! Hope your DD feels better soon x

Nat888 · 07/09/2022 21:50

Thats because you are a good mum. She's lucky to have a mummy that cares for her so much and is making sure she is OK. As the PP said above when we have jabs we are a bit sore/unwell after. It's just when it's your baby your emotions and anxiety that they are ok is massively increased when they have these jabs.

I was completely the same. I cried all day because I thought he was really unwell and couldn't tell me. It was honestly a cry I had never heard before and it's scary for us mums.

Sounds like you're doing a wonderful job - keep doing what your doing and she will know she is loved and safe with you and should be better tomorrow or the next day ❤

This makes me feel a bit better for my little ones 12 week ones tomorrow. I'm already getting emotional at the thought of his cry again 😢

firsttimemomma93 · 07/09/2022 22:06

It sounds pretty normal! It's so sad seeing them like that isn't it! My little one is 12 weeks now, after his 8 weeks jabs he was barely drinking, his temp was 39 and he just looked so sad it was heartbreaking! He also had random cries not like usual. He woke up that night/morning about 3am for his bottle all smiles and back to his normal self! He's got his next jabs Monday and I'm dreading it 🥲

JulyDreams · 07/09/2022 22:24

@zeromango my DD is breast fed only and she hasn't fed from me really she has completely lost her appetite! Thanks for your comment and reassurance that really helps.

@firsttimemomma93 just like my DD! She is randomly doing short crises!

My now 17 month old cried relentlessly for about 2.5 days after her first lot of vaccines, it was a challenging couple of days. She was so out of sorts and poorly. I just gave her as much milk as she would take, lots of cuddles and Calpol doses as and when possible. It's awful seeking them so fed up, your poor LO.
Keep an eye on their temperature and definitely call 111 of you become concerned. My friend has a baby 2 months older than mine who breezed through her vaccines, I think they all respond differently but I certainly don't think it's out of the ordinary for them to feel quite rotten for a little while afterwards. Hope they're feeling much better soon
