Does school allow boots as footwear?

So just a quick question. Girls obviously have t bar or Mary Janes. In the winter are they allowed to wear boots? I'm not talking Ugg, wellies etc I mean proper black leather ones

Some do, some don’t. My DC’s primary school do and I always get DD ankle boots for winter as it’s so much nicer for her to play out in them and she much prefers them.

holidaytimeatlast · 02/09/2022 06:47

Ask your school, they'll all be different. Ours said no. Silly ballet shoes that flung off if a girl tried to run - no problem. Sensible boots that kept feet dry, warm and stayed on - obviously not appropriate for school...

Our school allows boots yes, so long as they’re black and flat. Some have stupid rules though and don’t allow them.

If they didn't allow them would you wear them and just say well they are - plural as I've got twins. I don't want them having soggy socks and feet all day. How uncomfy

DDs school the uniform requirements say "Please make sure that your children come to school in appropriate footwear and outdoor wear so that they are able to move safely around school and play out in comfort and warmth."

So yes she can wear boots.

No idea what the uniform code at your DCs school is though. You could always have the, wear wellies there and back then change into shoes at school.

TeenDivided · 02/09/2022 07:26

Some do, some don't. Would they be comfortable doing lots of sitting on the carpet in?
(Personally my DDs just wore wellies to school in bad rain and then had usual school shoes to change into when they arrived. I didn't like paying out for too many pairs of shoes while their feet were still growing, and you can jump in puddles better.)

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 02/09/2022 07:32

Ours does not allow boots, apparently it's more important for the children to sit crossed legged on the carpet (not entirely sure how the boots stop them from doing this) than have dry feet.

SheWoreYellow · 02/09/2022 07:34

As others have said, you can changed them out of boots at school. If it’s very rainy they generally don’t go out to play.

Notcoping90 · 02/09/2022 07:36

My DD wears flat, black boots in the winter. Her regular mary janes don't hold up to any amount of moisture!

Stichintimesavesstapling · 02/09/2022 07:39

Ours don't and I cannot stand it as a rule. I've talked to the headteacher about it and he just point blank says no boots, including Chelsea type boots. Given that the boys wear seemingly whatever they want I consider it to be deeply sexist. It means DD has to cycle or walk in wellies and then stand hopping about at the classroom door while I try to get the shoes on her without her putting her socks on the wet ground (they don't allow her to change in the classroom or keep wellies there).

To my mind there is an undercurrent suggesting that girls in boots are somehow too sexy or something (at primary age), I can't see any other reason for the rule, and that points to the head teachers issues rather than girls wearing practical boots.

No idea if DD school does, she went in on her first day in black DMs and has everyday since. Far more practical than regular girls shoes.

Blanketpolicy · 02/09/2022 07:48

My sis got her son a pair of boots for school, he asked for shoes back within days as sitting on the carpet etc was too uncomfortable.

There was nothing to stop girls wearing trousers and more practical lace up/velcro style shoes. Many of ds's classmates did that most of the year (Scotland) with skirts only being worn in summer.

SkankingWombat · 02/09/2022 07:53

You need to check the school's uniform policy OP. It can be found on their website usually. Each school will have its own oddities of what is/isn't allowed, so it is impossible for anyone on MN to tell you without knowing the school.
Thankfully my DCs' school allow boots provided they are black and without a heel. However, sitting cross legged isn't an issue they've needed to consider because they also insist we shell out for indoor shoes (what they give with one hand, they take with another...).

NannyR · 02/09/2022 07:57

Shoes like these are probably the most practical solution. They look more comfortable to wear all day than boots and are better for physically playing in.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/09/2022 07:59

Neither the first school (YR-Y5) has just left, the middle school (Y6-Y8) she is joining or the high school (Y9-11) after (where DS is) allow boots of any sort. It's a rural catchment, the high school doesn't even have anywhere to leave boots you may need to walk in with.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/09/2022 08:01

DD has always worn closed shoes - her choice. When she was younger, they'd be what is marketed as boys shoes, but now she wears brogue type lace ups.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/09/2022 08:02

DD is autistic and will only wear black ankle boots, virtually all year round (she can be coaxed into Crocs in hot weather). This hasn't been an issue at her primary school, but I notice that both of our first choice secondary schools (she's about to go into Y6) don't allow boots.

I cannot for the life of me understand why - what's wrong with having warm, dry feet? Am wondering if they'll allow boots as "reasonable adjustment."

ldontWanna · 02/09/2022 08:03

If the school allows kickers type shoes, then they wouldn't normally fuss over boots in a very similar style.

hotdiggetydog · 02/09/2022 08:03

Imagine if the school had a telephone and you could ask them directly

BackT · 02/09/2022 08:05

Our primary did. Secondary not but some do wear them anyway.

ldontWanna · 02/09/2022 08:05

Something like this

Does school allow boots as footwear?
RayKray · 02/09/2022 08:05

I have a hunch mine doesn't. But my youngest wears boots and no one has said anything. I'd take some convincing to do anything about it even if they did say anything. They're not going to refuse to let him in.

Apl · 02/09/2022 08:12

At our school the head specifically sent a letter out banning boots.

What makes me seethe is all the female staff inclusing the head wear… boots!

Do consider some of the wonderful tough and practical school shoes marketed at boys.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 02/09/2022 08:16

My DD's school allows boots, but then we're in the countryside and it's definitely not practical to expect parents to do anything else in the soggy autumn and freezing winter! They also allow girls to wear trousers.

Mercerly · 02/09/2022 08:22

I wouldn't take a lick of notice if the school tried to ban boots. Can't actually believe this is even a thing?!
