Just that really

Some days this summer my daughter hasn't drunk enough and we have had dry nappies

My mum thinks I'm overthinking it with squash, but she's only 18 months. I do t want to make a mistake.

It really doesn’t matter it’s not a big deal, unless there drinking it all day every day not great for the teeth. Mine has squash sometimes but prefers water actually. In the summer I encourage squash to get more fluid in and when he’s sick. Fruit shoots aswell. If there diets awful an there eating sugary shit all day and 10 fruit shoots then yes that’s bad but things in moderation are fine.

Meant to say mines 3 so I think it was from about 2 I wasn’t so strict about squash and fruit shoots.

I literally can't remember! Not under one but at some point after that? Three children, 13, 10 and 5, all healthy, sporty and not a filling between them! All drink loads of water now still, as well as other drinks. I literally do not have time to stress about squash drinking...life is hard enough!

Your mum is right so what ? If it’s your first baby don’t worry , I was very different with my two learnt bit of juice won’t hurt if teeth brushed etc - they are still alive eldest 17 not a sugar addict very normal no long term effects . No issue . Don’t over think be balanced in approach .

FHmama · 27/08/2022 22:47

My 2 year old hasn't had it yet but he loves plain water so have no reason to give him anything like squash until he asks for it when he's older I guess, if he's had it at a friends house etc. I don't like it so never have it in the house.

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 27/08/2022 22:50

Never, it's unnecessary.

Water or milk are the best drink options (for overall diet & teeth).
Probably the cheapest too!

Carriemac · 27/08/2022 22:55

Never . They're now in their 20s and drink water ( or alcohol) and occasionally fresh fruit juice

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 22:57

I found that parents who were stricter etc 0 sugar Had opposite affect , kids grew up binging on stuff they were never allowed to have - moderation is key I’m not saying give it to your children but if they have it it’s not the end of the world

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 22:59

Agree ! But hey ho my kids have beautiful teeth have things in moderation but then breast fed until 2 years with both now older if we are out and they fancy a drink of juice or a coke they have one 🤷🏻‍♀️

Trainfromredhill · 27/08/2022 23:02

We stopped giving it when dc were 4& 3 as one was diagnosed with deminerslised teeth and we were told we had to cut out all sugar. Only then did we realise how much shit kids are fed.

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 23:03

Wow they must have been on a lot of sugar for that to happen - did you give them a lot of sweets and treats ?

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 23:04

Did that include sugar in carbs and fruits too ?

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 23:06

Most kids aren’t fed shit ? I think if you give a lot of snacks and treats outside of meals prob the culprit ? Cooked dinners better and if a glass or two of juice maybe a snack per day 🤷🏻‍♀️Treats when out

Sumthingsweet · 27/08/2022 23:08

My sister in laws kids had to have operation on childrens teeth , they were eating choc treats sweets lots - she started off saying she would never give sugar but then gave up now all sugar addicts clearly affecting their behavior too and same demineralised teeth 😐

Spot on

professionalnomad · 28/08/2022 14:42

I've learnt that my daughter will drink water if it is coldl from the fridge but doesn't enjoy room temperature water

Sux2buthen · 28/08/2022 14:54

First child was three then I relaxed. It's a slightly flavoured drink, not crack.

mackers1 · 28/08/2022 14:57

My child's nursery were brilliant with good habits. Credit to them. Aged 9 and still only drinks water and milk. I know that it will change.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/08/2022 15:10

Mine all drink squash and fruit Juice hasnt stopped them drinking water i really dont understand the angst on MN about squash and Juice and the insistence that if they are given squash they will never drink water again. They were about 2 when they first had squash.

They have orange juice or apple Juice with breakfast then water or squash throughout the day. Generally they all ask for water until mid afternoon/dinner time when they ask for squash because they are fed up with water then back to water again. All have healthy teeth according to the dentist.

I mostly drink fizzy drinks and juice and at 39 have had no fillings or issues with my teeth - not advocating this as healthy btw
