When did you put DC in a cot bed?

DD is 15 months and stays at my mum’s house twice/three times a week. She’s currently in a travel cot but is almost too big for it as she’s quite small. My mum’s said she wants to get a cot bed for her but is she not too young?

I said to my mum I’ll have a look to see if I can see a bigger travel cot but they do tend to be similar sizes. DD still loves to roll over and bang into the bars at her cot at home and couldn’t imagine turning it into a bed just yet. Does anyone have any recommendations for what I can put her in at my mum’s house or is it not too young to try a cot bed?

15 months is a bit young for a bed. My ds stayed in a cot until he was 2½ years old.

P.s.a cot bed is a cot that converts to a toddler bed. Do you mean a cot or do you mean a bed?

FoxtrotSkarloey · 11/08/2022 10:18

Has she really outgrown the travel cot? Sorry to ask, but I've had two big babies and we've managed to keep them in comfortably until 25 months and still used it for them, albeit possibly a little tight length wise until 30 months.

They are a pretty standard size but you do get some slightly longer and thinner ones. I wouldn't waste your money though, as you'd need different sheets too and it would only buy you a few extra months.

Given how much she's staying over and if the long term plan is to get her a toddler bed, then I'd buy a cot bed now and use it as a cot until she's a bit older before converting it to a bed. They don't cost that much more that a toddler bed and the main cost in the mattress which you'd need anyway.

(I know you've said your mum wants to get a cot bed, but I assume you mean toddler bed, otherwise I don't see the issue?)

Sorry guys I’m being confusing. I have a cot bed at my house so it’s still being used as a cot and can turn into a bed for when they’re a bit bigger.

My mum is speaking about a toddler bed for her house. I did think of just getting a cot bed for my mum’s but I’ve just bought a cot for my 3 month old so I really don’t have the money😭

Yeah my daughter has grown out of the travel bed. I’m 5”9 and her dad’s 6”4 so she’s a tall baby. I’ve attached a pic of what type of cot bed, they’re quite small anyway tbf

I think DD was about 18 months when we moved her to the toddler bed because she was a little monkey and started climbing the bars so we figured it would be safer to not have them.

Warning, it makes it very easy for them to get out of bed and toddle about instead of sleeping!

But she will be fine safety wise as long as there are other measures in place like a stair gate at the top of the stairs and you can get attachable bed rails to stop them rolling out in their sleep.

Eldest was 9 months when he went into a toddler bed because he could climb out the cot (and everything else in sight) by then. 90% of the time he climbed out fine but the rest of the time he’d lose his grip coming over the top and it was 50/50 whether he’d fall back into the cot or smash his face off the floor again. Most purpose made toddler beds - not cot beds - are really low so when he rolled out it was fine. It’s basically mattress height from the floor. It depends on your needs but our boy came to less harm in the toddler bed than the last month in his cot.

RedCup80 · 14/08/2022 00:23

You can get travel cots the same length as a cot. We have a Hauck one.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/08/2022 00:26

We skipped toddler beds because they are a waste of duvet cover/sheet money. For my eight month old I just got a Montessori Floor bed this week. There’s one on a site called something like Crazy Price Beds or Cut Price Beds which we just bought for £130 and its near the floor so she can’t fall out. It also looks like a tipi and it’s really cute. My oldest was in a single bed from seventeen months after he climbed out of his cot. Littlest is so happy and it’s easy to settle her in a full length bed as I’m not crammed in.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/08/2022 00:28

Just checked the delivery message, the place was called Crazy Price Beds. The slats aren’t perfectly sanded but all the parts the baby can touch are perfect.

Bobbybobbins · 14/08/2022 00:28

My eldest stayed in his cot/travelcot til he was 2.5 but youngest was in cot bed at 1.5 as he climbed out of everything 🤦‍♀️

toomuchlaundry · 14/08/2022 00:31

I can’t remember what age but it was quite young but it was after he managed to climb out of the cot in his sleeping bag! It was a cot bed so took off sides and then put a safety rail thing on the side to keep him from rolling out. Then put a stair gate on his bedroom door

PinkButtercups · 14/08/2022 00:33

I changed my DS's cot over to a cot bed when he was 2.5.

avamiah · 14/08/2022 00:33

My daughter was about 18 months as well when we got her a Toddler bed but it was great as we used to say it was her big girl bed and she loved it.
We bought it from JohnLewis with the mattress and and I have to say it was a brilliant buy as when she grew out of it we gave it to her little cousin as the bed frame was in perfect condition so they just bought a new mattress.

I would definitely take a look online .
Good luck

Toosadtocomprehend · 14/08/2022 00:37

Mine were all 2.5 to 3 before moving out of their cot . Never had the problem with climbing thank goodness
15 months is very young and I would be concerned about safety,

HighlandPony · 14/08/2022 00:44

Really glad to see I’m not the only one who had a young climber. We did the same with the baby gate on the bedroom door but he learned to climb that too

AutumnVibes · 15/08/2022 05:04

Mine was about 17 months as the cot broke so it didn’t make sense to buy another. It was absolutely fine, transition was smooth. If money is tight, look on eBay or gumtree as the wood is just wipe clean and you can buy a new mattress.

Caspianberg · 15/08/2022 05:38

Mine was around 18 months that we had to take side of the cot bed and use as toddler bed. And take stair gate down as he just climbed over both. He would stand ontop on stair gate or cot bars, balance and leap off!
he also climbed out of travel cot in 2 seconds flat

User4223131 · 15/08/2022 05:56

My 21 month old is still in his cot. I wouldn’t feel right putting him in a bed yet as he throws himself about all night!

we went away a few months ago and he had outgrown his travel cot so we bought a Hauck one which he was really comfy in and it gave him much more space 😊 it’s under £40 at the moment

Hollyhead · 15/08/2022 06:02

Didn’t bother with toddler beds, I put mine straight into a full size single at 2.5, no bedguards either, both fine. Capitalism makes everything more complicated than it needs to be and not for our benefit!!!

mrssunshinexxx · 15/08/2022 06:05

My toddler is 27 months and still in cot bed I would get a second hand off fb market place for your mums so they are more comfortable asap

GoAround · 15/08/2022 06:21

My 18MO is in a single bed with a guard. You have to fully baby proof the room
but other than that it’s fine. We’ve had no issue with him getting out of bed before morning either. There’s very little point getting a toddler bed though, they make sense if you already own a cot that coverts but otherwise you may as well go straight to a single.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/08/2022 06:35

Took the side of the cot at 17 months as I was pregnant and couldn't lift her in and out of the cot. Apart from rolling out the first night, we had no problems. She then moved into a single bed just after her second birthday as DD2 needed the cot. DD2 was a similar age.

If she's tall don't bother with toddler bed, just a low single bed.

Topjoe19 · 15/08/2022 06:53

You can get bigger travel cots, as a pp said, the Hauck ones are big and last longer. Dream and play or something like that. I got mine pretty cheap on sale in Tesco.

MuddlingThroughLife · 15/08/2022 07:08

As soon as mine were walking they went from cot to low single bed.

Phillipa12 · 15/08/2022 07:11

All 4 of mine were climbers so went into single beds at 15/16 months old, I didnt want to waste money on a cot bed and the linen. I did buy a toddler bed guard and at night I also put a folded up duvet on the floor next to the bed. None of mine fell out or attempted to get out. A cot bed is a good solution by your mum, the height from the floor is minimal, just make sure that any hazards are removed from the room and you get a stairgate for the door.

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesn · 15/08/2022 07:14

My almost 2 yr old slept in that exact travel cot comfortably this weekend, loads of space. He's on the 99th percentile for height...
